Posted on 02/26/2005 3:47:17 PM PST by Hildy
For all of those who have called me every imaginable name because I dare to suggest that there are some things worse than death...I don't wish you on you anything that poor woman goes through on a minute by minute basis. Because you know so much, and are so sure that you are right because you are all so freakin self-righteous...I'm leaving FreeRepublic because I no longer want to be a part of something that has become so twisted. Hannity is right, this website has been hijacked. It was a good run...but we'll find another place. Save your jabs, I won't be reading them. To those who have privately agreed with me, and there are many, thank you. I'm just worn out and frankly, don't even care what most here think.
sure there are things worse than death. killing the innocent, for example.
Don't let the door spank you on the way out.
Living in California? Yep some things are worse than Death.
We need to Pull the Plug NOW! ;^) Just kiddn
Good luck, Hildy ....
Methinks its more you, not getting us, to believe your view is the right way. May God never let this happen to a child of yours.
Or torturing someone who wants to die by keeping her alive aginst her will.
yeah, maybe you're right. Starvation and dehydration ain't that bad!
I read some of your posts on the Schiavo interest. You are/were clueless. Too bad we're losing an old-timer though.
"Or torturing someone who wants to die by keeping her alive aginst her will."
You know the only "evidence" that death would be what she wanted is the heresay assertion of some off-hand remark she made after watching a TV movie. I'd hate to die because someone remembered I'd once said "just kill me if THAT ever happened" once upon a time.
Unfortunately she's not the first and she won't be the last.
And I've said more here today about Terri Schiavo than I ever had before. I guess I better shut up now, lest I find myself denounced by Sean Hannity and Opinion Journal.com
I know where you are coming from, and please just take a few weeks off.
Your perspective will be renewed and you will realize that these Terry threads are not really FR. They are populated largely by those who will not even be here when this matter does come to a close.
For those FR members of long standing who have participated in insult and impertinence, I can only say they are few.
Take a break, you did a fine job explaining this in a neutral fashion. But they want a cheering section. We cannot allow ourselves to be affected by it.
Euthenasia is a very slippery slope. The question is not whether some ways of living are worse than death (I can think of two just off the top of my head), but "Who decides?"
When the decision is irreversable it's not a trivial question, thus we are morally compelled to err on the side of life.
If you think this forum should be turned into another ideology reinforcement site, like all the FR imitators/spinoffs became, where unattractive opinions are censored, you are quite mistaken. Besides, you should know enough by now to know Hannity is all flash and no substance, while FR is precisely the opposite.
Believe me, I understand what you are talking about.
Hope you'll reconsider. We don't really like "preaching to the choir," contrary to some people's opinion. Sometimes, we get a bit flip in our frustrations, and sometimes we even become loose cannons. That's why we're called activists. I personally wouldn't want to post on a site where there wasn't a little fire in the belly of those posting.
I can't speak for all here, but I think what many here fear is the slippery slope. Go to a site called, "Not Dead Yet," and read about how the Holocaust began. It started with the disabled children. The Nazis didn't start with the Jews, but disabled children aged 1-3. Abortions were required by any who'd been empregnated by genetic inferiors. (Social Dawinism)(The state given the power to allow abortion, can also REQUIRE it) They then decided ages 1-17 would be more efficient. They first exempted the Jews believing they didn't deserve "such a quiet death." Even the Nazis were distressed that the starvation took too long, so they then used poison injected directly into the heart. By the time they decided that disabled adults also should be given this quiet death, they had graduated to gassing and set up killling stations all over Germany. when they finally got around to the Jews they had perfected the final solution. Before the Jews, there were 80,000 disabled Ayrans exterminated.
Hildy is a long time freeper, loved by many. I will miss her.
Someone who has been with us since we first sounded the alarm about the Clintons.
Been a little while since we had a good Opus.
I give it a 7.
Better yet, Hildy. Log onto a site called, "Useless Eaters" if you'd like to know what this is all about.
Hmmm ... maybe you and Hildy could both try not eating and drinking for a shorter period than you'd support for dear old Terri. Just 96 hours. See what its like. A wonderful painless exit and all. Such a blessing!
No, I mean who IS she. The other day I said I thought she had some kind of protected status around here, and all h@ll broke loose. She must be someone of stature - not just for her longevity of posting here.
I really don't want you to answer my question about who she is (that is private and protected, I understand) its just that she always is in the middle of a flame war and she never gets burned.
Hey I'm always in the middle of flame wars and never get burned, either (OK, OK... almost never). I don't think Hildy is anyone that you or I would recognize, it's just that people who have been here for a long time have the best understanding of what they can and cannot do here.
FR has loyalty to the folks who stood together through the hard slog of the Clinton years, and with good reason. It's easy to join up with a majority, but a lot harder - and more meaningful - to join up with the minority we were at the time.
It's a shame you're leaving, Hildy. Please reconsider. I'll miss you and hope to see you back here soon.
You don't persuade people to join your cause by calling them idiots. That's why Liberals lost on November 2nd.
She's recently taken a lot of heat from mostly newbies on the Schiavo threads.
I understand her frustration and I hope she comes back.
Thanks for the update, but....who are you?
Yes, of course you're right - there should be some kind of loyalty I suppose.
I was here during the Clinton years too. I lurked at FR everytime I went to the library...didn't have a computer. My thanks to all you "oldtimers" for carrying on when I couldn't be here.
You are the one who is self-righteous, along with all the others who think they themselves are God.
Well, I could respond to that. I could make inferences like you did, or I could respond with a medical or a common sense answer, but I won't do it.
No point to it.
I must say, that I have had more fun at a goat ropin than I do on these threads, but that is neither here........nor there.
It's not about protected status, stature, or longevity. Hildy has been around on this forum long enough to know what the posting rules are. I personally believe she walked away from FR because she didn't want to risk losing her posting privileges from FR by being goaded into a flame war by some poster who refuses to listen to opposing points of view and would rather bait her into a insulting and name calling flame war.
Don't have the guts to try a fast, sterno-man?
Heh,Heh, I think I'll let that one go too.
My, aren't you the charming one.
Welcome to Free Republic.
Thank you JeanS. I do appreciate the welcome. However, please don't ever confuse "blunt" with "charming" when posting about me, LOL!
The season of offing the burdensome expands and left unchecked will be at your own room one day. And a Nurse Hildy will be to your loving care.
Those of you who think that she should be starved and dehydrated to death seem to think that she's not sentient enough to feel that pain. How do you explain that she is being tortured these last few years if she isn't sentient to know it? You are speaking out of both sides of your mouth.
Also, since we now have word that Terri has been able to communicate, shouldn't we ask her now what she wants, rather than relying on what her estranged husband said that she said roughly 20 years ago? The reason we have statutes of limitations is for the simple reason that people minds are not exactly conducive to remembering all the details and particulars of events.
Michael Schiavo is a perfect example in that in courtroom testimony, he can't remember when he and Terri moved to Florida, how long he held jobs for, how he found Terri, face up or face down. Why should his attention to this particular 'story' (about Terri's alleged wishes) be so definite, when he remembers so few things?
Please admit WTP, that you are a euthanasiast.
Is that what you think this is about?
I'm sad and mad at you simultaneously...lol.
The vile, nasty posters aren't worth fretting over.
I'll see you at pplillipup...lol.
You'll like Nurse Hildy. Or maybe you'll go gently into the night surrounded at a table by loving friends who have tea and pleasant conversation before and after you blow your brains out.
That is the worst I have called her, but she had it pulled.
well, let's look at this. hundreds, if not thousands, of years of jurisprudence have held that suicide is not to be condoned. Is it torture to prevent someone from committing suicide? If generation upon generation, continent to continent, through the ebbs and flows in the marketplace of ideas held that it is not, do you disregard the accumulated wisdom and say that it is? Do you go a step further -- a very big step -- and hold that, if you believe that it is torture to prevent someone from committing suicide, that your belief should be imposed upon Terry Schiavo (or anyone else, for that matter)?
Are you implying that Terry Schiavo is being kept alive against her will? Can you provide concrete evidence to support that claim? And, if you cannot, do you hold that hearsay is grounds enough to kill a completely defenseless person?
The only toruture going on is what is being done to logic on the pro death side of this case.
Please don't leave us nurse Hildy!
But I doubt you have the sophistication needed to understand my thinking.
So let it be.
On the other hand, perhaps you've had a parent in a long-term hospice, wasting away -- or worse: become insane, mean and crude -- and got convinced that pulling the feeding tube was true compassion.

Hildy, I don't know you nor read a lot of your posts but I say this because I think the Old Timers here are very important to us all. Take some time away but come back.
You have been here a long time, that in itself speaks volumes in more ways than one. You probably joined because you wanted to do something for your Country, you had beliefs and hopes for America and shared them here, how can you do that if you go. Fr is not perfect, neither was or is America, that's why you came here, to do something about it, you can't do that by being silent or leaving for greener pastures, you can't leave America for greener pastures either. ;^)
Please stay, us newbies can't learn without you, we need a 'heritage' here as well as our Country to remind us where we've been and where we are headed.
