Huh?? What about Genesis 38: 8-10?
38 8: Juda, therefore, said to Onan his son: Go in to thy brother's wife and marry her, that thou mayst raise seed to thy brother.
38 9: He knowing that the children should not be his, when he went in to his brother's wife, he spilled his seed upon the ground, lest children should be born in his brother's name.
38 10: And therefore the Lord slew him, because he did a detestable thing
Well, if God killed everyone who masturbates, there wouldn't be anyone left.
Uh, God slew him because at the time his duty was to continue the family line in the place of his brother.
He shirked his duties and this was detestable.
That was a severe penalty for early withdrawal.
More seriously there is a question of whether the penalty was for the act in general or because the act was in defiance of the command for Onan to "keep his brother's name alive" with his brother's widow.
Also, that has nothing to do with female masturbation, as it refers to "spilling of seed."
That is coitus interruptus not masturbation.
Doesn't have anything to do with masturbation. It has to do with Onan disobeying God's command.
Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." 9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also.
Again, the passage says NOTHING about masturbation.
I think that's about something other than masturbation which is depicted in most every porno.
While Onanism has become a synonym for masturbation, read the passages again. It could just as easily be that Onan was using the withdrawal method, a very risky mode of birth control but nevertheless a reasonable interpretation based on the description in the passages.
I think the sin Onan committed was denying his wife/brother's wife a child...not necessarily the "spilling of the seed".
That story was about greed, not whackin'.
Instead of honoring his brother's memory and his sister in law, he dishonored them. It was a sin against family.
Huh?? What about Genesis 38: 8-10? Juda, therefore, said to Onan his son: Go in to thy brother's wife and marry her, that thou mayst raise seed to thy brother. He knowing that the children should not be his, when he went in to his brother's wife, he spilled his seed upon the ground, lest children should be born in his brother's name. And therefore the Lord slew him, because he did a detestable thing
Onan's sin was CONTRACEPTION (coitus interruptus), not masturbation.
If God is so against masturbation why are there wet dreams? That isn't something you can control, but it is essentially the same as masturbation. In some ways it is better. As one of my friends pointed out, "If you have had a wet dream you can't even call yourself a virgin anymore, it is just like sex."
Here's a parable that mirrors what I think the lesson of Genesis 38:8-10: I am no biblical scholar, but to me you have accepted only half the meaning that is clear to me just from a standpoint of reading comprehension.
God commanded Onan to go feed his brother's wife, as his brother was dead and she was hungry.
Onan instead fed himself, and dumped his extra food on the ground instead of feeding her. She starved, and God punished Onan.
Now. Is the lesson here that we should never throw away food? or that we should never disobey the order to feed the wife?
Um, can you read?
He was killed for pulling it out before going...
He was killed for shirking his responsibility. He wasn't masturbating....
