Mirecki hospitalized after beating

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the reported beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists.
Kansas University religious studies professor Paul Mirecki reported he was beaten by two men about 6:40 a.m. today on a roadside in rural Douglas County. “I didn’t know them, but I’m sure they knew me,” he said.
Mirecki said he was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men tailgating him in a pickup truck.
“I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up real close behind,” he said. “They got out, and I made the mistake of getting out.”
He said the men beat him about the upper body with their fists, and he said he thinks they struck him with a metal object. He was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
“I’m mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots,” he said.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Officials are classifying the case as an aggravated battery. They wouldn’t say exactly where the incident happened, citing the ongoing investigation
The sheriff’s department is looking for the suspects, described as two white males between ages 30 and 40, one wearing a red visor and wool gloves, and both wearing jeans. They were last seen in a large pickup truck.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS or the sheriff’s office at 841-0007.
Mirecki recently wrote online that he planned to teach intelligent design as mythology in an upcoming course. He wrote it would be a “nice slap” in the “big fat face” of fundamentalists.
The remarks caused an uproar, Mirecki apologized, and KU announced last week the class would be canceled.
I hadn't read # 461 until now, but I still can't object to it. because in a rational world it makes sense.
Who among us, if we came upon a group of blood thirsty thugs bashing the brains out of 50 million puppies, kittens or baby chickens on the sidewalk, would not stop the slaughter anyway we could??
This very scenerio has taken place to the tune of 50 million baby humans in abortitoriums, for the past 30 years, while we sit on our hands and whine like a bunch of helpless ninnies.
You, I and almost everyone else offended and repulsed by this slaughter are too much into self preservation to sacrifice our lives for the lives of these little ones.
I suspect that when we stand before God on judgement day, even more than the heartless baby butchers,we will have to explain why we considered our own cowardly lives and comforts more valuable than the lives of the little ones who we allowed to be murdered, without doing a damn thing to stop it.
I believe that God will be more merciful to those who sacrificed their mortal lives in feeble attempts to destroy those evil places and the evil people that occupied them, than he will to us.
Though I myself am a coward,I respect those heroes who are portrayed as evil, by the very ones who enable the true evil to continue.
Funny how the ones these guys hate most are the ones the GOP badly needs--if they could splinter off a few votes, they'd get their majority in the Senate.

Don't get me wrong, I thought about it, too. But they knew who he was. Not that he was some sort of pinko professor guy from Larrytown, but he was the guy.

Turns out the best breakfast place in Lawrence is on the south side of town, so that adds up, too. Lawrence isn't that big a place.
Which made me wonder why he went so far away. Again, that was to clear his head. Sorry, too many coin flips that have to all turn up heads.
If violence is the consequence of speech, then it isn't "free." The Colonists had that "freedom" under the king.
Let me clarify my statement meant as /sarc. One can open their mouth and say whatever they want to say. They have the right in this country to do so, but beware, whatever one says can have unexpected consequences that one did not anticipate nor can one control.
Example: If you walk up to a biker and tell him that his lady is one butt ugly woman, you have every right in this country to voice that opinion, but you may not have thought through the unexpected consequences when the biker proceeds to rearrange your face. It has nothing to do with having the rights to free speech. It has everthing to do with basic human interaction, ergo, my original statement was intended to point out the irony that you have rights of free speech, but if some other person gets offended by what you said, then you may pay in the end by receiving an unexpected result from voicing your free speech. You can choose your actions, but you cannot choose the consequences. That's all.
Yes, Mirecki's face does irritate, no doubt about it. After a second look though, it's not a face I'd want to stick a fist into, but rather a face that is begging for a cream pie to be shoved into it.
They are definately laying it on thick and turning every ant hill into a mountain of contention. I suspect we all have dealt with this bunch or their peers before, under different names of course.
They knew who he was when he confronted them. They could have recognized him as that ay-thee-yust egghead. You don't know they knew that before they stopped.

My wife told me today she's scared it's exactly the kind of thing I'd do. And living in this part of the country, you really don't expect violence.

There's a weak spot in the GOP when it comes to libertarians and the religious right. The libertarians have to learn to understand that even their cultural opposites can have a seat at the table--their tax cuts and property rights may well depend on a little tolerant alliance.

Are you kidding? You are no more capable of determining who needs "help" than you are of determining the difference between gloating and sarcasm. Suggestions of "help" from someone who has no moral anchor are as valuable as a red visor cap in the dead of winter. Besides, you are not really interested in anyone receiving "help." You merely tossed out the suggestion as an insult.
