MANSFIELD, Ohio — The deadly mix of drugs that has killed addicts in Detroit, Chicago and Philadelphia has reached Ohio.

Mansfield police have identified the powerful prescription painkiller fentanyl in six of the last 10 batches of heroin confiscated by police.

Mansfield police laboratory director Anthony Tambasco said he decided to start looking for fentanyl after hearing about the deaths in Detroit just before Memorial Day. Authorities there have confirmed 100 fentanyl/heroin deaths. Another 60 were confirmed in the Chicago area.

Isn't Fentanyl what Patches Kennedy said caused him to crash his automobile? And I always thought Fentanyl was a date-rape drug!

See the movie "Brick". A great film noir set in a southern California high school with nary a swear word used.

I will admit one thing about the recent tragedies surrounding this:

We know each death was due to using illegal drugs.

It's a sad way to find out who is supporting the drug cartels.

Granted, this is unlikely, but could it be a form of terrorism? I honestly don't know where heroin comes from, but if its an opiate, than the ME would be a source...

It's not intentional. Drug dealers ain't the smartest out there. There was an incident a while back (10+ years) where a guy killed himself while running a meth lab.

Turns out he'd failed chemistry twice in high school. SO WHY WAS THE IDJIT RUNNING A METH LAB?

I'm not a libertarian, but if it were legal the contents and potency would be known.

People are mistakenly injecting a drug many times stronger than what they are used to doing. You may think they deserve to die for their drug use, but you can't blame the lack of quality control on an illict substance on people who would rather see it legalized and controlled.

I don't remember the last time I read about someone being blinded by drinking methanol that was in the whiskey they bought at a state liquor store.

There was a guy in South Central L.A. we called "racoon". A black guy cooking P.C.P. who blew himself up. He went to a war surplus store and bought himself some old WW II pilots goggles and blew himself up again. This time he burned the pigment out of his face (except where the goggles protected his eyes), and he really did look like a racoon.

At the end of a two-day conference on the painkiller fentanyl, police and federal drug investigators said they are better informed about the growing crisis and are aggressively working to cut off the Mexican supply of the drug, which has tainted the U.S. heroin market and killed hundreds of people.

It is sad. The paper here ran a story a few weeks back about a girl who went from A student to dead in the space of a few years. Heroin is nothing to mess with.

When the overdose deaths started happening around here a week ago, some people were flocking to the city looking for the killer stuff.

Drugs are nothing to ever get into.

I think the facts kids can get themselves killed indicates the parents are so disconnected from their kids that they don't eat together often.

How could a parent not eat at least once daily with their kid and not see a change?

Fentanyl is all the things that people said it was on this thread (pain killer, used as patch etc.) but its primary role in life is as a synthetic narcotic used in anethesia. Certain forms of anesthesia require high does narcotics which typically get combined with other pharmacology to concoct an anesthetic "cocktail". Fentanyl was a "designer" narcotic built to meet this specific need. It is something like 5x (or 10x I forget which) more potent than morphine and presumably also more potent than heroin. Sounds like people that got hold of some of this drug are now sleeping "The Big Sleep". Guess there's yet another reason not to be an iv drug abuser.

I really don't see the problem here.

Are localities being overstressed brom the expense of burying dead junkies all of a sudden??

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing wider distribution of adulterated heroin, nation wide. Seems to me to be a self-curing problem, in that you'll either get good and scared and seek treatment, or you'll die.

Either way, it's a net sum gain...

Whoever thought mixing fentanyl with heroin knows nothing of drugs. That stuff is so strong it's measured in micrograms, rather than milligrams like most other medicines. Those idiots were probably mixing it like they would any other additive, or the users, who didn't know what they had, just used too much.

Patches got his nickname from Howie Carr, Radio personality and Boston Herald columnist. It was a takeoff on the song "Patches" by Clarence Carter in reference to him being the latest new hope for the Kennedy family's political fortunes.

One day papa called me to his dyin bed Put his hands on my shoulders And in tears he said Patches, I'm depending on you son To pull the family through My son, it's all left up to you

I can see quite a few ways where this drug can be used to commit the perfect murder. I'll bet a lot of these "accidental" deaths of unsuspecting "overdosers" were actually the premeditated ultimate crime perpetrated by others.
