Mel Gibson's statement on his DUI arrest
GrandForksHerald.com ^ | 7/29/06

Posted on 07/29/2006 1:51:47 PM PDT by LdSentinal

The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:

"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.

"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.

"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."

I never said he was a saint, I implied he was human. Nothing more, nothing less.

It appears that Mel is just a man after all.

Hopefully things will turn out for the best.

Folks who put people up on pedestals are always shocked to discover their idols have feet of clay.

Trite but true.

Sounds familiar...

What are those similarities? Gibson over indulges in alcohol while having a fun time and is busted by the cops. Rush addicted to pain killers in order to maintain some semblance of a normal and pain-free lifestyle.

Big difference between drinking to have fun and taking pills to alleviate chronic pain.........

Don't waste your time responding, we're already familiar with your inane arguments on all the bash Rush threads........

He was .4 over the line for crying out loud.

0.04, actually. Too much to drive, for sure, but let's be accurate.

Just curious. Why did you put up a pic of Rush in response to comment #2 that said that Gibson's true views came out? ...

I first listened to him from the Raleigh, NC station, when he was a two hour show from NY. When the Wilmington station picked it up, I wa glad. I listened most every day, and enjoyed the updates, and all the rest of his antics.

But, he has been given a pass by too many people for his addiction, and the surrounding mess he found himself in. He mde his own bed.

Limbaugh lied about his addiction, then hid behind a click lawyer, and went to rehab. He made the statement that he had a back problem, and it got him there. I suppose that may be true enough, but he sure played in a lot of golf tournaments. I've played golf... and I saw evidence of a BIGGGGG usage on his part.

Plus, if you believe anything of his maid's story. He is just another junkie that got caught!

Mel got caught, too! Now, he's goint to take the "pre-emptive" steps toward "rehabilitation"! Roy Black must have called!

What can he say...SORRY I SAID OUT LOUD WHAT I REALLY FEEL INSIDE? He said what he meant. He's just sorry the world now knows. What's to forgive him for? I'm being serious. Forgiveness is given for true remorse. If that's how he feels that's how he feels. But this is the way I feel.

"I know what he stands for in his life, and the faith and works of his life speak for themselves."

He's had a drinking problem his whole life. He's also an avout Catholic who apparently hates Jews.

I'm going to have to look for tha episode...it looks funny.
Btw, I know you don't agree, but I always cringe when I hear people call themselves a Christian and habitually drink alcohol. Mel talks the talk, but he doesn't walk the walk.

If Mel had used the word "Christian" where he used the word "Jews," one wonders if so many here would still be willing to give the guy a pass.

I was just thinking about that...if say Stephen Speilberg or someone high-profile had said these awful things about Christians.

Honestly, I believe that is he came out the next day with the heartfelt apology Gibson seems to have given about how awful his behavior had been, he would be forgiven by many.

There are crimes in law, and then there are crimes of decorum. Crimes of decorum are never forgiven. You can't take back an outburst of non-PC temper and expect to ever live it down. (Unless you're a liberal Democrat, of course.)

Remember how an officer's use of the N-word gained an acquittal of OJ? Nothing made Cochran any happier than hearing that racial slur. Then he got to play victim, and throw the truth on the defensive.

He was .4 over the line for crying out loud. If he is the Alkie like you say he is, that isnt nothing.

Uh, Mel Gibson himself says he's an alkie.

And the report, as given on TMZ, said that he was observed weaving between two lanes of traffic.

That's drunk, and dangerous.

Read Gibson's statement again. He admits he lost control.

I meant to say DID NOT commit a crime of violence where he intentionally harmed someone when he was sober.

Sorry.

If the Romans hadn't hadn't crucified my friend at the instigation of the Jews, those of us who are Christian wouldn't have a religion. So anyone who hates Jews for that isn't thinking it through.

And just in case it gets read that way, hating Jews just because they are Jews shows one isn't thinking their religion through too.

So, when I was drunk and had told this ugly woman I loved her to get her into bed, I meant it?
Wow..thank you for that insight.

Well, whooptie freakin' do! Of course he is human. Everyone is human. Adolph Hitler and Saddam Hussein are Human (no, I am not saying Gibson is anywhere near that level of evil). But to say "he is only human" is meaningless.

I'm guessing Mel saw the name tag of the arresting officer and went off on his tirade. What does getting pinched for DUI and Jews starting wars have to do with each other. Didn't he ask the cop "are you Jewish?" He said a lot of stupid stuff that night. You know....drunk talk, beer muscles. Everybody turns into the same person when they get pie-faced. I think Brad Paisley's song "Celebrity" applies here.

Judge not, lest ye be judged.

To abhor evil, someone must first judge evil. God instructs men against "hypocrisy" commanding them to "abhor what is evil" (Rom. 12:9). Thus, unable to judge, and unaccustomed to abhorrence, Christians en masse become hypocrites when they obey the Hypocrites Golden Rule. For "judge not" (Mat. 7:1-5) is simply a hypocrites application of do unto others as you would have them do unto you (Mat. 7:12). "For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged" (Mat. 7:2). Judge others as you would have them do unto you inverted is Judge not if you do not want to be judged. Therefore the hypocrite does not judge. As Jesus said, "Judge not… you hypocrite" (Mat. 7:1, 5 KJV; Ezek. 16:52).

Jesus repeatedly taught men to judge rightly, insisting they "judge with righteous judgment" (John 7:24) and He praised a man who "rightly judged" (Luke 7:43). Paul shamed the Corinthian Christians because there was no one among them willing to "judge the smallest matters" (1 Cor. 6:2). As the Apostle wrote, "He who is spiritual judges all things" for "we have the mind of Christ" (1Cor. 2:15-16).

I'm almost sure I've heard him say he's an alcoholic and suffered it during his whole adult life. His wife has almost left him because of it I believe.

I’m not giving Mel a free pass on this nor am I offering an excuse for his bad and inexcusable behavior, but relapse is a very real hazard and not all that unusual for the recovering alcoholic. I know this from personal experience.

He needs to deal with the consequences of his actions, take responsibility, make appropriate amends and get back, quickly and earnestly to his personal program of recovery.

It’s very sad to see his relapse made so public. I hope his failing now can eventually become his greatest strength to himself and others.

As far as his supposed ratings at his arrest – understand that alcohol is a drug and as a mind-altering drug it does, when taken in excess, warp one’s perceptions of one’s thoughts and perceptions of that of the world around you. What you think perfectly rational while drunk is often abhorrent and irrational to you when sober.

I hope for his sake and the sake of his family and friends, he gets back on track.

I would wish this for anyone, regardless of political point of view.
