Bush: happy for Cheney's gay daughter pregnancy
Reuters ^ | 12/15/06

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney's pregnant lesbian daughter Mary will make a "fine mom," President George W. Bush said, sidestepping his past comment that a child ideally would be raised by a mother and father.

Mary Cheney, 37, and her longtime partner, Heather Poe, are expecting their first child, which would be the sixth grandchild for the vice president. Cheney was hired last year as an executive for America Online.

"I think Mary is going to be a loving soul to her child. And I'm happy for her," Bush said in an interview with People magazine.

This is conservative moral relativism.

Angry that Jesus didn't yell at the woman at the well and throw her down the well? That he allowed the woman of questionable repute to wash his feet? That he told the parable of the prodigal son being welcomed by his father? That he didn't have the adulterous woman stoned?

Was he a moral relativist, too?

There is a difference between making the best of an imperfect situation/being civil and endorsing/promoting.

Jesus told the prostitute to go and sin no more. Mary Cheney is going to be raising a child in a sinful relationship.

President Bush need not have been negative - a no comment would have been the dignified response - unless of course, he approves and the situation does make him happy.

ROFL, you could use this too.

Bush could have very easily said "I am not going to comment on the personal life of Mary Cheney. I respect her privacy", and leave it at that. It is very disappointing that he chose ebullient praise of a homosexual artificial procreation, but certainly not surprising given his increasing wishy-washiness.

But if someone sticks a microphone in your face and asks you about your friend and political partner's daughter, you say "I am happy for them".

If you ask me in a public (and hostile) forum about my friends or family, I am not going to air my dirty laundry.

Trying to read more than this from his comment is not appropriate IMO.

"In a 2005 interview with The New York Times, Bush said: "I believe children can receive love from gay couples but the ideal is -- and studies have shown that the ideal is where a child is raised in a married family with a man and a woman."

He sidestepped the issue when questioned by People magazine about whether he still held that belief."

He could simply have stated , Yes I still believe this.

And a "No comment" would have been sufficient about Mary Cheney's pregnancy.

Jesus told the prostitute to go and sin no more. Mary Cheney is going to be raising a child in a sinful relationship.

And President Bush has publicly said that the best family structure is a mother and a father. Nothing has changed, but like Jesus, he still treats each person with dignity and tries to make the best of an imperfect situation. Bringing up the Mary Cheney issue is EXACTLY like when the Pharasees brought the adulterous woman before Jesus, trying to make political hay.

Are you aware of how many truly bible-based evangelical Christian churches have programs to work with single mothers? They don't change their belief and message that following a biblical lifestyle is always the best way to go, but they also are working to make the best of imperfect situations. They don't shout down and humiliate these pregnant girls and moms, instead they aid them and show Christ through how they treat them. Ministers, ministries, and missionaries all evangelize by working WITH sinners, not pounding them down in some sinner caste system. That doesn't mean rolling over and endorsing gay marriage or cohabitation or drug use or any other sin. But Jesus dined with the tax collector, worked with the unclean, and ministered to the lost. Kindness is an attitude, not a policy endorsement.

Are you kidding?!? A 'true conservative' would disown their daughter like Carpetbagger Keyes. And if Bush were a 'real conservative' he would fire Cheney and go on television during primetime to condemn Cheney's daughter for such a heinous act, probably calling for a marriage amendment as well (adding one more thing to the federal government's plate it was not intended to be involved in).

"If you met Mary Cheney at a party are you gonna tell her that?"

Tell her that lesbianism is wrong and sinful, and to bring a baby into a lesbian "marraige" is wrong and harmful to the child?

If I was called to do that I sure would.

I disagree that this is sidestepping his previous statement. That he thinks Mary Cheney will make a fine mom doesn't change that he thinks ideally a child would be raised by its mom and dad.

I wish I could say I can't believe all the crude statements on this thread, but I can. Aparently people forget that the president is a politician. Politicians can't always say exactly how they feel. And they have to say nice things in public, especially about close family of the VP.

I would expect this President so show respect for his Vice President and not publicly condemn Mary's choice.

This President would never make a personal attack on anyone, let alone this woman.
