Shop owners in Ontario, Quebec and a few other provinces must now hide tobacco products from their customers under rules that will cover most of Canada by year-end as the country tries to stamp out smoking by young people. The law has its critics, including those who point accusingly at Ontario's provincially owned liquor stores. But advocates say the seemingly draconian measure will eventually work, and is too important to get bogged down by morality.

What the idiots cannot comprehend is that the more forbidden something is, the more appealing it is to a lot of young people.

I just got back from Toronto. You can’t even smoke in tobacco shops there, while the taxes make tobacco products twice as costly as in the US, and four times as costly as in Bermuda.
To: Daveinyork
Makes it pretty profitable for the northern US border towns no doubt.

We shouldn’t rest too easily. S chip will pass and be signed next year, no matter who the President is.

Communists are not even trying to hide now. Loss of freedom is picking up speed.

This is the same government that hands out crack kits and needles to addicts.
My local Shell station owner went to the meetings to fight this measure, and was told that kids can't be charged for smoking, but he can be charged for selling cigarettes to minors, and now can be charged if anyone can see the cigarettes he sells.

Oh definitely, WTF is going on up there anyway? I thought the 'new conservative government' of Stephen Harper was going to put the damn brakes on this mad dash from socialism to full-blown Communism? Is it due to the terminal minority status that the Conservatives seem to be stuck in?
Any of the idiots down here in the U.S. who keep bleeting about doing away with the Electoral College need only study the "direct election" nonsense that goes on in Canada to understand why the electoral system established by our political ancestors is superior to any other system.

Ironically the loudest opponents to proposals that would charge kids for smoking are the ones instituting bans and higher tobacco taxes, the Cancer Society, Lung Association, etc.

So, they admit it’s a “draconian” measure? LOL. Well, at least they’re being honest.

They'll be along directly, I reckon, telling us how glad they are to no longer be tempted by the devil weed, and what a super idea this is, better than more taxes and stuff.
They seem to forget the store owner has a price to pay for materials, and a good bit of wasted time setting up this joke. And,it probably has to be up to some kind of “code” some nanny state crapper dreamt up.

You’re missing the real purpose behind it-they’re hoping many store owners say to hell with it, not worth the time or expense or risk of fines, I’ll just stop carrying tobacco products.

Why not ban cigarettes then. Oh, that’s right, the government loves the taxes that it gets from the sale. Bastards - all of them! Coming soon to a city near us....grrrr

Good point. Ban cigarettes and their production already. This whole thing passed “silly” 5 years ago and has moved straight to retarded.
Next to be banned from grocery shelves.....Twinkies.
