Schwarzenegger Urges Residents in Path of Flames to Flee as Fire Roars in Three Directions
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 30, 2009 | 11:21 am

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today urged residents in fire evacuation zones to flee as firefighters predicted another difficult day battling a wildfire that has burned 35,000 acres and threatened more than 12,000 homes from Acton to Altadena.

Schwarzenegger noted at a morning press conference that three residents in Big Tujunga Canyon suffered serious burns trying in vain to save their homes Saturday.

"There will be people who don't listen," the governor said at the fire command post in Lake View Terrace. ". . . Move as soon as [firefighters] say to move."

Although thousands of homes are covered in the evacuation orders, many residents have stayed behind, with some vowing to fight to protect their homes from the Station fire.

The fire line now extends about 19 miles east to west. The governor and other elected officials praised firefighters for successfully protecting subdivisions in the foothills.

With temperatures expected to reach the mid- to high 90s today in the fire areas, officials said they were anticipating extreme fire conditions, mirroring Saturday’s, when flames leapt as high as 80 feet and spread at a rate of about 2.5 miles an hour.

More than 2,000 fire personnel now are deployed fighting the Station fire.

In the Acton area, mandatory evacuations have been ordered along the 14 Freeway from Soledad Canyon Road to Crown Valley Road and along Aliso Canyon Road from Soledad Canyon Road to Angeles Forest Highway.

The California Highway Patrol has also closed the onramps and offramps to the 14 Freeway at Soledad Canyon Road, Agua Dulce, Escondido Canyon Road, Red Rover Mine Road and Crown Valley Road. They said they were concerned that fire behavior in the area could become extreme as they were expecting the wind to shift about 10 a.m.

No forest management would have made a difference in these fires.

Afraidfortherepublic, you do know that current California law DOESN’T ALLOW people to clear their property, right?

Aside from that, I’m really disgusted with everybody on this thread who is cheering on the loss of homes and lives in this fire. Yes, things could be changed; but how would you feel if everything you had was going up in flames and people from across the country were cheering? Or if you were a firefighter engulfed in flames and you knew everybody thought this agony was something you deserved for living in California?

And as for illegals, wiggen, I hope when we all have to flee to Costa Rica after Obama cracks down on us, that you will relish our death by fire as much as you are wishing it on others.

Get a grip, folks

I’m with you.

It is odd how people laugh at the misfortunes of others. Reminds me of an older time, before the advent of Christ, before man “evolved.” As the Roman poet Lucretius said:

“Pleasant it is, when over a great sea the winds trouble the waters, to gaze from shore upon another’s great tribulation.”

I thought we were better than that now.

Then again, we did elect Obama, so...

Just goes to show their “don't give a damn about anyone but themselves.”

Will the media blame Obama for this, just like they blamed Bush for Katrina?

So you’re going to let the government dictate what everyone can do with their property?

I know it sounds tough, but you have to understand the CA ecosystem. Building in those canyons and failing to clear the underbrush is a recipe for disaster. Probably all the residents should be bought out and the entire area be declared State Forest. Building in the canyons (with shoddy construction in some cases) is akin to building on the beach at low tide and then complaining when the waves come flooding back and knock your house off it's foundation! When its acreas and acres of forest that burns, you just let it go and it finally burns itself out. No lives and dwellings are lost.

When lives and real property get involved, of course people demand that other people put their lives in danger to "save" them and their property. Why should we risk our lives and our fortunes to save people who built where they don't belong?

How many fire fighters will be lost in this fire, or have their health severely damaged? How many tax dollars will be spent? I know that sounds harsh, but if you understond California's ecohistory, you'd understand that building in those canyons is similar to building on the slopes of a volcano and then asking to be saved when it erupts.

It's an uncomfortable choice, but possible one that has to be made. Years ago, the only people who lived in those canyons were hermits, gold miners, or seasonal vacationers, etc. Now, there are thousands of homes which makes it a tinder box. Nobody wants to clear their brush because it's "charming".

Well, don't ask my husband or son to risk their lives rescuing you. And don't ask me to pay for fire fighters and their equipment to put out a fire that may have been started by your B-B-Q grill!. And if your ill placed house feeds a fire that threatens my house in town and damages my lungs because your fire has polluted the air I breathe, I'm not going to be very happy.

Please, all California residents, forgive me for speaking the truth. I'm a native of your state, the descendent of pioneers of your state, and it saddens my heart to see what greed, overpopulation, and overbuilding has done to the once-beautiful state of my youth every time I return on family business.

I live in California-Tuolumne county. We have to clear our property, and the fire department patrols and checks. I live in the mountains.

It might help if he came out and worked on the evacuations himself:

“Come with me if you want to live.”

I don't know what brings this out in people. It's ugly, but it seems to be part of human nature. I hope that none of the people saying those ugly things consider themselves Christian, because I really can't imagine those remarks coming from the mouth of a Christian.
