ITHACA A group of upstate New York dog owners thinks it has a plan to profitably compost the tons of dog doo left behind by the roughly 50,000 canines that use the citys pooch park each year.
If their pilot project is successful, the Tompkins County Dog Owners Group and Cayuga Compost hope to market usable compost within the next two or three years.
Dog and cat waste contain parasites and pathogens that make them unsuitable as compost for vegetable gardens and topsoil and can run off into local waterways and diminish water quality, said Cary Oshins, an assistant program director for the U.S. Composting Council. Composted pet waste can be used for deep-fill or other purposes.
There are any number of small-scale backyard pet waste composters and converters available on the market, but Oshins said he had not heard of any place in the U.S. trying to compost pet waste on such a grand scale.
There are between 3,000 and 4,000 dog-dedicated parks in the United States.
A handful of dog parks in the U.S. provide onsite composting receptacles but none has tried moving it offsite to a large-scale composting facility in a commercial venture, according to DogParkUSA.com, a national dog park Web site.
Its not surprising that Ithaca would try to find an eco-friendly solution to its excess dog doo problem. The city has a long history of being a city on the cutting edge.

I wonder if the bills coming out of Congress would qualify.
No, this is dog poop, not bullsh-t we’re talking about.
“The city has a long history of being a city on the cutting edge.”
- Yeah, on the cutting edge of $hit! LOL
Greater than 1 out of 10 pet owners are infected with their pets parasites, worms of all forms.
Well, they do it at zoos...but I think dogs carry a lot of parasites that can bother people, too.
Of course, that doesn’t stop me from kissing my dogs, LOL!
And watch for ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan’ to be right behind Ithaca on this!
They’ve been turning dogpoop into cash for years in that town, and I’ll prove it: they’ve been paying Cornell’s professors. Next case.
So if Pittsburgh is the Steel City does this make Ithaca the S*&! City?
The SEIU will realize that the 'dog shit churners' aren't unionized and that they need protection. The tree huggers will complain the dog shit isn't natural (due to the 'processed' food fed to the dogs). They will demand a federal law to certify programs that certify the 'organic origin' of the dog shit - with endorsement from the SEIU. SEIU will require that Purina, Ole Roy and IAMBs be unionized.
The IRS will start to wonder "Just what in the hell taxes aren't these assholes paying?".....Obama (or his cronies) will start to demand kickbacks.....
Meanwhile, PETA will publicly outcry that "dogshit and dogs can't be abused and taken advantage of in this manner". The only remedy, according to the PETA spokesperson, will be the permanent installation of a PETA observor [paid] on every dog shit collection point and churning plant.
If there’s any place on earth that has sh!t to recycle...
Well, you have to admit, it is "shovel ready" the moment it leaves the dog...;-)
Dog poop may turn into cash in Ithaca but Bull shi- is gold in Washington.
"Ithaca is a great city...for me to poop on."
First we’ll need some funding for a study. Then some more for R&D. Then some money for marketing.
Since private enterprise won’t touch this will need some government grants.
This is the last time you’ll hear about this idea for another ten years.
How’s that solar powered library work out at night or does it close at sundown?
Cutting Edge and FULL OF it!!
Great for either a Bumpersticker or a TSHIRT!!
I can't believe that many individual dogs in Tompkins County use the pooch park. They must be counting total visits and not accounting for the fact that most dogs visit more than once a year. Right?
Now that’s funny, I don’t care who you are. PETA equals “People Eating Tasty Animals”
