The city of Detroit has turned away thousands of people who lined up Wednesday for a chance to receive stimulus money set aside for homeless and low-income residents.
Wednesday at the Cobo Hall was the last day for Detroit residents to get an application for Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program stimulus money.
The city said an overwhelming 50,000 people came to the center seeking money that was promised to keep low-income residents from losing their homes and finding temporary housing for the homeless. The massive crowds created a fire and safety hazard and forced the Detroit Police Department to shut down the entire process.
"The line was so long that we couldn't even get in here. And look, there are people all over the place, this is getting crazy here. We need help here," said Detroit resident Yvonne Crandell.
The crowd got so rowdy at one point that people were fainting and fighting. The Detroit Police Gang was called.
DPS also requested that the Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services team, which is trained to help law enforcement deal with a disaster, come to the Cobo Hall to help deal with the crowds.
The teams are distributing food and other relief to people waiting in line.
More than 20,000 applications were handed out Tuesday at six neighborhood city hall locations. Residents had one last chance to get an application Wednesday at the Cobo Hall, but after only one hour of opening its doors, the city ran out of forms.
Asia Johnson was the first person in line at the Cobo Hall.
"Yes, I'm No. 1 and I've been in line since 10 o'clock p.m. last night," said Johnson.
"I feel that the ones are out here really, really wanted it, if they didn't they wouldn't be in line to get it," said Debra Yatts, who had been waiting in line since 2 a.m.
The applications deadline was Oct. 7. Those who have applications will have one week from Wednesday to turn in a filled-out application. Completed applications can be mailed to the Detroit Planning and Development Department at 65 Cadillac Square, Suite 1400, Detroit, MI 48226.
Some people in line Tuesday falsely believed they were registering for $3,000 stimulus checks from the Obama administration.

But instead, city officials told Local 4 that Detroit was granted $15 million in stimulus money to help residents pay bills and their rent or find temporary housing for the homeless.
"I'm at a dead end then, because we need this, we truly do need it," said Yatts.
Detroit is among the nation's leaders in home foreclosures, and at least one in four households are in poverty.

Funny, I looked at the photos and they all looked well fed and, even though hip hop style is vulgar, they looked clean and well dressed. Certainly didn’t look like needy, leachy, homeless grifters.
If someone were to walk up and down the line and through the crowd with a bullhorn saying
“there will be no direct payments to individuals”
there would be about 20 people left.

My first thought: This doesn’t bode well for Detroit. Have an uneasy feeling about that city.

If you noticed, most of them are on their cell phones. Where do they get these things and how do they pay for them. How much you want to bet they all have big flat screen TV’s also.

That's about double the average Lions home game attendance.
The truth is that poor people in America live pretty good. And if your goals in life are really low, you can live good on welfare and government assistance. America is truly a great country!

One of our local food banks gives free food to our lower income families monthly. There are quite a few vehicles in the blocks long line that are worth far more than mine. Ticks me off big time.

That’s a terrible thing to do to people, though - sap their very life force from them.
Much better if they faced hunger for not being willing to work. It would be much better for their character and for society.

I agree with you but wanted to add some info.
The people who are grifters and scammers and “professional” beggars aren’t just misguided, they’re thiefs at heart. Who is truly incapable of coming to the conclusion that depending on the govt for your sustenance is bad for you? Very very few are incapable. Most of these people are hardcore grifters.

It's frustrating that these people are so brainwashed that they cannot see that it is LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC POLICIES that are directly responsible for many of the hardships these people currently face.

Yeah, most of the vehicles parked outside the last Toys for Tots distribution that I took note of were upscale too. The most outrageous one I saw was an Escalade with gold plated rims.
