Hard-right elements tarnishing Republicans' chance at White House (Another Laff Riot)

The prospect of Rick Santorum winning the Republican nomination for president has made a lot of Republicans nervous. Sure, the slugfest with Mitt Romney will continue beyond today’s primaries in Michigan and Arizona. But party leaders and pundits are already assessing the damage wrought by those who have dragged the party to the far-right fringes of conservative thought.

New York Times columnist David Brooks writes that this is a real problem for the party seeking to capture the White House:

“All across the nation, there are mainstream Republicans lamenting how the party has grown more and more insular, more and more rigid. This year, they have an excellent chance to defeat President Obama, yet the wingers have trashed the party’s reputation by swinging from one embarrassing and unelectable option to the next: Bachmann, Trump, Cain, Perry, Gingrich, Santorum.”

Who’s at fault for this debacle? Brooks doesn’t shy away from giving Republican Party elders a spanking for putting its collective head in the sand and not fighting back when the hard-right elements began demonizing moderates and any elected official who supports compromise and bipartisanship on Capitol Hill...

The GOP should be quite happy, Mitt won Michigan’s democrat stronghold which he stands zero chance of winning in the fall. Districts 5, 8, 9 10, 11, 12, and 14.

Yes, the effort is being trashed by the only people who can win. Shameful.

People like this think Gerald Ford was “hard right.”

Oh, they like to imply that they’d be open to voting for a conservative-bashing “Republican” like Huntsman, but EVEN IF such a Republican gets nominated, they NEVER support him.

I remember having a debate with a now-ex-friend who lives in CT. He loves to talk about how moderate he is, how he doesn’t like kneejerk Dems OR Republicans, etc., etc. But for whom did “moderate” guy vote in the CT Senate race? Dick Blumenthal, who’s never strayed from Dem left orthodoxy, supported Harry Reid, etc., etc. — all because he didn’t like voting for “a wrestling promoter” instead.

Romney basically won Detroit last night and not much else. What kind of chances do you think Mr inevitable electability has there in the fall?

The GOP is dumber than a box of rocks and that’s an insult to rocks.

Sounds like some of the “moderates” I know who supported far left Obama over moderate McCain.

I’d like to hear morons such as this guy explain how a moderate position is going to solve the one-million dollars in unfunded liabilities per American tax payer.

Our nation is now 15.4-trillion in debt, and he’s worried about the “far right...”

The mush-headed middle is just as responsible for this mess as is the left.
