Officially the National Rifle Association convention is not supposed to begin until Friday, at the Americas Center of St. Louis, Mo. But really the NRA convention began Thursday in a courtroom in Sanford, Fla., its keynote speech delivered by a man in a jail jumpsuit who barely said a word.
His name is George Zimmerman and he is not just the face of the NRA in this country, he is the face of gun laws built on the fears and paranoia of the gun lovers in the NRA, the ones who have made a mockery of the Second Amendment. His name is George Zimmerman and in all the big ways he is the darling of the NRA, which wants the whole country to shoot first and ask questions later.
And if an unarmed 17-year old kid ends up dead in the street, well, thats just the cost of doing business.
Zimmerman: Another guy in America who should never have been allowed to carry a gun but sure had one the night he shot Trayvon Martin. A guy who finally got arrested for murder because a brave Florida prosecutor decided George Zimmerman wasnt allowed to hide behind one of those Stand Your Ground laws that have become a better license to kill than James Bond ever had.
Mayor Bloomberg was talking about laws like that again yesterday, one day after delivering a speech in Washington that was the biggest and best speech any major American politician has ever given on the subject of guns.
These laws are vigilantism masquerading as self-defense, and getting 25 states to pass them is one of the best con jobs the NRAs leaders have ever pulled off, Bloomberg said. They dont give a damn whether innocent people are shot and killed. And they dont give a damn about the integrity of the American justice system. They want to create a nation where disputes are settled by guns instead of gavels, and where suspects are shot by civilians instead of arrested by police. These laws destabilize our justice system, they degrade our society, and they destroy innocent lives. We cant be silent and we cant let them stand.
And here is what Bloomberg said on Wednesday at the National Press Club, on the day when he and national African-American leaders announced a new partnership to reform or repeal shoot-first laws now on the books in Florida and 24 other states:
The NRAs leaders werent interested in public safety. They were interested in promoting a culture where people take the law into their own hands and face no consequences for it. Lets call that by its real name: vigilantism.

The moral of this sad debacle is that when the president and AG of a country are punk racist black thugs, a white hispanic cannot shoot a black punk thug in self defense and expect justice.
It’s like a Jew killing a nazi party member, and expecting a fair trial.
If the New York weenies think they will have any influence whatsoever on Arizona’s gun laws, I can give them a good deal on some oceanfront property in Ajo.
No I don’t think this is a cause the NRA should stand their ground with. There was some poor judgement on Zimmerman’s part. He didn’t do everything within his power to avoid this.
I looked at the link to try to find comments. I did not see any. Has anyone else seen comments there? Does the New York Daily News allow them?
Hey, what’s that little A in my tagline?
They hate self-defense. People who can defend themselves don’t depend on government as much.
Florida has issued over 1 million carry permits since 1987 and we have a 40 year low in our crime rate. How’s your city’s stats compare Bloomberg?
Since you were obviously an eyewitness, you should call the Sanford police department ASAP and tell them what you saw!!
And without a gun, we know Martin would have eventually quit slamming Zimmerman's head into the concrete?
Without a gun, Zimmerman may have actually died.
” He didnt do everything within his power to avoid this.”
There is so much misinformation on this case it is really impossible at present to make that judgement, but I guess if he was going to “do everything in his power” he would have just called 911 and gone home.
He took a gun on neighborhood watch. He knew what he was up against. His record of scores of 911 calls attests to that.
Some sort of club would have been more appropriate. It is visible mostly non-lethal and would have been a visual deterrent. All he took was a concealed weapon. He didn’t want anyone to know he was armed.
That is the judgement angle.
George Michael Zimmerman, born Oct. 5, 1983, registered as a Democrat in Seminole County, Fla., in August 2002, according to state voter registration documents.
How much do you want to bet that that mumbling attorney for Trayvon’s parents would’ve used “Stand Your Ground” to defend little Trayvon if he’d killed Zimmerman on that sidewalk?
HE WASN”T ON NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH!! He was on his way to the store! Maybe you should read up on this case before you pontificate on it. I suppose you think he said “f***ing c**n too?”
“Some sort of club would have been more appropriate.”
Some sort of club? What sort of club can protect you from being blind sided, the club taken from you and you being beaten to death with your own “protection”?
when was the last time u got your ass kicked?...I think u need a good one!.....*G*
That's me, but I still carry at times.
you wanna hope nobody iss packing when u intervene with your damn club!!!.......lol....U don't get it yet do ya!...u gotta quit smokin that shit in the barn!
A CLUB??? Ok...I think I will hang on to my weapon of choice, and you golf with yours. Geez???
