Jamaica Talks Reparations, So What About Us? (Ruined keyboard warning)
News One For Black America ^ | April 25, 2012 | Dr. Boyce Watkins

Posted on 04/25/2012 4:18:05 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

A few Jamaican lawmakers recently announced a quest to explore reparations for the transatlantic slave trade. This is the second effort to discuss reparations, after the first one failed in 2010 due to financial difficulties. The effort involves the restoration of a commission that will investigate the issue and possibly ask for compensation from Britain or repatriation of some Jamaicans to Africa.

Most people of color might agree that Jamaica is not the only country where its citizens deserve reparations for slavery.

African Americans continue to endure the consequences of the slave trade to this day: Whites have a wealth level that is several times higher than our own, we don’t have the tax base to afford quality schools, and most of the major institutions in the United States are run by Whites. In fact, most African Americans work for predominantly White-owned companies, and the majority of them don’t get the opportunities they deserve.

These institutional disparities didn’t create themselves.

And in spite of what White Supremacy 101 teaches us, inequality is not the result of laziness or a lack of discipline on the part of African Americans. Instead, the disparities are the result of a nation’s 400-year commitment toward creating a society in which one group lives in a way that is superior to another.

The United Nations and other parts of the world have noted the impact of slavery on American racial disparities, but the United States, a country that regularly claims the moral high ground on human rights violations around the world, is unable to see violations of its own: Not only have reparations not been paid to people of color, whose families experienced undeniable abuse at the hands of slavery and Jim Crow, but our nation has even refused to apologize.

Another atrocity for which reparations should be demanded is the CIA’s role in looking the other way as crack cocaine was allowed to flood the Black community during the 1980s.

It is well-documented that the CIA allowed puppet rebel groups in South America to fund their war by selling crack in Black communities. The rise in crack distribution, along with the loss of jobs, the presence of high-powered weapons, and a weakened educational system turned many prosperous Black neighborhoods into instant war zones.

The U.S. government’s role in allowing for crack cocaine distribution, in conjunction with mandatory sentencing during the ineffective War on Drugs, has created a mass-incarceration epidemic that has destroyed millions of Black families across America. As a result, millions of children grew up without their Fathers, and many of them never made it to adulthood. Our communities are not always good places to live, and there are elitist government officials who were never held accountable in the same way they would be if they were young Black men carrying crack through the hood.

All of these issues must be laid on the table if we are to truly discuss racial healing in America.

Meaningless talk about a post-racial America can never occur if our government refuses to even apologize for what it’s done and help to repair the damage. But America is a country that is largely built on lies, and perhaps it’s high time that we start telling the truth.

Sound off here:

Do you think African Americans should receive reparations?

Yes, absolutely

No, absolutely not

TOPICS: Heated Discussion
KEYWORDS: blacks; economy; obama; racerelations; reparations; slavery; unemployment; welfare
Excuse me, Doctor Watkins, but what were the TRILLIONS of dollars spent on the "War on Poverty" since 1965? What is affirmative action? What is welfare, section 8, JTPA, Food Stamps, government cheese, food banks, unemployment insurance, child care grants, EEO, ADA, etc, etc? No other country has EVER spent more on helping blacks, yet they're worse off than when we started! Explain that!!

OK, we refuse to apologize or pay. Would you like to go to Africa, “Doctor”?

Uh, yes it is. If blacks had followed the example of GW Carver or even ML King, they would have built a life for themselves rather than depending on government to serve their every need.

It is also the anti-success, anti-freedom attitudes taught in American black culture. Succeed in life because you've worked hard like my black friend Peter? Uncle Tom. They label ANY black who overcomes an "Uncle Tom" or "too white".

I think blacks in America are going to figure prominently in the next hot civil war in this country. And it ain't gonna be pretty for most of them.

"...inequality is not the result of laziness or a lack of discipline on the part of African Americans."

Bullcrap. Yes, it is. Look at the Americans of color who have applied themselves, gotten a decent education, and risen to levels as high as, or higher than, their contemporaries from high school.

Slavery did not create the reality where one out of four Black homes has a stable mother-father-offspring foundation. Liberal Progressives have created that reality.

Slavery did not engender, over the last 60-70 years, an almost entirely dependent "Government Handout" class, Liberal Progressives have created that reality.

Slavery is the dead horse continually being whipped by the Liberal Progressives (whose forbearers once comprised almost exclusively all Slave Ownership in America) in an attempt to score political points, using it as a smokescreen to disguise their singular culpability in the current plight of Americans of color.

Any Liberal Progressives who want to donate to American Blacks is free to do so. Reach for one penny of my earnings for any of this crap, and your hand comes off.

Period.

it takes stooopid on a Jamaican order of magnitude to think they would be better off in Africa... let alone to think that Africans would want Jamoke gangbangers let in

I remember my White Suprmacy 101 teacher. He was so helpful and friendly. Always ready to show me the proper technique for keeping my boot on the throat of the black man without going fatigued.

White Supremacy 303, however, was really hard for me. And the instructor was a real jerk. I barely passed White Studies because of that jerk.

What about 600,000+ American lives during the Civil War, of course assuming the claim that it was fought over slavery.

my fathers uncle ended up in Andersonville prison, a southern POW camp and died 2 years after the end of the CW from diseases he caught in the camp. No one in my family ever had a slave and sure as hell don't own money to people that never were slaves. Most just parasite's that want reparations IE: free money.....

Canada got it right when the modern government was asked to apologize for an event that took place in the early part of the 20th century:

“The Government of Canada has not apologized for its role in the removal, saying that it is not responsible for actions taken by the government in place 50 years ago”

Just as drug dealers face tougher charges than do their customers, the muslim slave traders should pay any reparations due (if any) rather than their British or American customers.

The freedom of blacks in this country was paid for with the deaths of 600,000 men.

Seeking money over and above that would seem to cheapen the whole freedom thing. MLK would not be proud if he were still alive.

Here’s a crazy thought. Why don’t we look at “progress” within nations that formerly allowed slavery.

A nation where a black person could be a member of legisation (such as parliment or congress) would be considered “progressive,” as well as one that would have a black person as Prime Minister or President. Such a nation should be considered “enlightened” and the slavery issue should be completely put to rest. In other words, shut up about it.

A nation that has a history of slavery, but has not “enjoyed” progressiveness such as the previous examples, should be given steep sanctions.

Finally, any nation currently involved in slave trade should be wiped from the planet and it’s soil sowed with salt.

Any takers?

Don’t these nuts want reparations from the African tribes who enslaved them? Or is it not the case because they don’t have any wealth?

From a very un PC song. You might choke if you ever heard the song. It was released back about 1968 and was kept under the record store counter. You had to ask for it.

Posting this here might be over the top but here goes!

They’re lookin’ for a handout
To get somethin’ free
Lookin’ for a handout
From you and me
And with the consent
Of the president
They’re gonna get their way
They’re gonna get their way
