Yet at the Last Supper the Lord Himself "broke bread and gave it to them..." with no mention of them kneeling and refusing to touch it with their hands. They had met for Passover so it was unleavened bread like the Jews still serve at Passover.

...the 4th century Gentile theologian Cyril of Jerusalem left a more detailed and ritualistic instruction for Communion...Cyril’s instructions emphasize technique:
"Approaching (Communion)…come not with your palms extended and stretched flat nor with your fingers open. But make your left hand as if a throne for the right, and hollowing your palm receive the body of Christ saying after it, Amen..."

It admittedly took some time in the Church for the vast implications of what Christ had done for us in instituting the Eucharist to begin to sink in. Once the Church became aware of the ineluctable need for the laity to display utter reverence when receiving the Most Blessed Sacrament, it never turned back.

We're made in the image and likeness of God and He gave us his Body. Anyone, frocked or not, who insists such a being is unworthy of touching the Body of Christ despite His insistence we "do this in memory" of Him, is following a bastardized version of Christianity.
