Several years ago I was camping in Canada. A drunk literally drove out of a cornfield and through our campsite, narrowly missing a sleeping toddler in a tent. By narrow I’m serious, he drove over a corner of the tent.
We got a great description of the car and driver. After tracking him down, the police came back to see us. They told us he was at home and while clearly drunk, he also clearly lied and told them he was drinking at home. They read him the riot act and left. There wasn’t enough physical evidence to arrest him.
That was understandable especially since no one was actually injured.
Their professors are just as dumb. Who has time to teach spelling and grammar when there is so much social justice warrioring to do?
There are no journalists, only propagandists.
Of all the smelts I ever smelt I never smelt a smelt like that smelt, smelt.—Groucho Marx.
She was NOT arrested She was Kidnapped at Gunpoint and held for ransom by Gang Bangers with magic blue costumes. The gang Bangers should be in Jail looking at 20-30 years.
“ Wrong. She was unsafe in her home. The tried to get her to call for assistance and proceeded to make a protective custody arrest.”
They have no ability to make such a judgement. It is perfectly legal to get drunk in ones home. The cops might rule the roads but, since before the Magna Carta, ones home is ones castle. The cops were totally wrong.
I believe “smelt” is okay in British English, but we Yanks say and write “smelled”.
Come on, DM, hire some US editors!
It’s where most of your readers live.
Brits use both. And this is from the Daily Mail.
2 countries separated by a common language. Regardless of where people read the Daily Mail it’s still a British paper. No reason for them to adopt our spelling.
Well, they did say it was a mobile home.
She is going to make some money.
If they were having a drag queen party and smoking meth they would have ignored it.
She was low hanging fruit and the cops were trying to play badass. I hope they get sued for everything.
SHe needs to sue the County of Rockighm for fa;se imprisonment and false arrest, violation of civil rights.
The police are the standing army of which our founding fathers warned.
What the story doesn’t state is whether she was accused of being the driver of the car which was the focal point of the whole fiasco. So, I assume she was not.
The individual cops as well as the city should be sued into bankruptcy.
This jack booted behavior is inviting vigilantism. It’s what happens when the people no longer have any way of preventing this thuggery in the legal arena.
In English both “smelt” and “smelled” are correct past forms of the verb smell.
In th UK, where the daily mail is from, they use smelt more often.
I learned “ smelt “ in a CT parochial school but that was back in the 60’s .
