I had taken basically the same position until I ran across this article. Every little bit helps.
The old school had basically two ways of dealing with prisoners, niether of which was as useful as this may turn out to be against this particular enemy.
Abuse is when you start breaking fingers before asking the questions to improve your military INTEL.
Of course the men who were laughed at by the little GI had more serious problems when the pictures became public. Loss of status is the worst thing that can happen to a muslim.
Did we make sure the pictures would become public? I don't know but it sure was good psychological-warfare in my opinion.
