White Southerners Drag This Country Down
http://www.useless-knowledge.com/ ^ | Sept. 14, 2004 | Mark Gelbart

Posted on 09/19/2004 7:57:12 AM PDT by chasio649

Don't get me wrong. I live in the south, and I love the south. I spend my Saturday afternoons watching the Georgia Bulldogs and other southern college football teams; I enjoy true quality peaches and real grapes known as scuppernongs; I eat my fatback and grits; and the people are very nice. I simply disagree with them about politics and religion. The political beliefs of white southerners drag this country down.

It has always been this way throughout American history starting with the issue of slavery. Most northern states gave up slavery as early as 1800, but for economic reasons, southerners refused to give up on the heinous institution. Everyone knows slavery was an economic advantage for a few wealthy landowners. They used their political clout to completely control and influence society. Having slaves was a detriment to the poorer whites as well, because they could not compete with free labor. Yet, rich whites owned the newspapers. The editorial pages were filled with pictures of what would happen if slaves were freed. (Black men would go with white woman. OOOOH! How abhorrent.)

We all know what happened. The bloodiest war in American history broke out. And it was not even because the north was going to force the south to give up slavery. It was because the country elected a president--who for the first time--was going to morally condemn slavery. This was a slap in the face to the south. The south defended the institution of slavery, and the southern Baptist religion was even founded on this moral defense. There is no argument today. At least not a reasonable one. The south was wrong. And the south was wrong during the Civil Rights battle one hundred years later.

The south is still wrong. If it wasn't for white southerners, George W. Bush would have no chance of getting elected. He can rely on the south to vote for him in a block. What's wrong with Bush?

Then there is the war on terror which has been one colossal blunder after another. Let's make this clear. Mr. Bush was not the victim of bad intelligence. He deliberately mistated the intelligence that he did have--an impeachable offense. Starting a war of aggression for phony reasons is a crime against humanity.

It is evident that we have a redneck gangster as president. Unfortunately, white southerners by and large support him even though his policies such as his tax cuts for the rich hurt working class southern whites. Their blind loyalty brings this country down.

About the author Mark Gelbart: I've written a novel entitled Talk Radio. I'm still looking for a publisher.

Let's see - Democrats are the party of Jim Crow, Republicans are the party of Lincoln, Grant, Reagan and Bush.

Right, southerners are evil.

More bs from a southron in name only.

What pap! Lincoln was willing to let the South keep slavery if the Union would stay together. When they seceded, THAT was when the civil war became primarily about slavery. Licoln would have done anything to keep the Union intact up to and including the EXISTING slave states remain so.

Scuppernongs? You betray yourself.

Any idiot (except you) knows they're muscadines. Go back to Massachusetts.

You really have to LAUGH! I mean, no one is going to let their buttons get pushed by a 4th grade essayist! Lord, I almost had tears in my eyes.

Yep, if it weren't for the Whites in the South, it would be a world-class, cosmopolitan utopia void of any crime or misdeed. GAG,,it's just too much really.

What are they putting in the grits down there?

White Southerners Drag This Country Down

As somebody who lives in the Northeast I must say that over the last 30 or more years, the cutting edge of political beliefs and how it relates to civilization and freedom can no-longer be found here.

It is found now in other parts of the country including -- the South.

maybe one thing he says is true:
Southerners DO LOVE President Bush, and we'll vote for him... but it doesnt have to do with blind stupidty.. we truly like a straight shooter, and a man that loves God and tells us so....we're tired of hearing about Rosie Odonnells "wife" and about her tribulations as a "husband" ... we DONT LIKE traitors and we love our country..
other than that, he is just a snooty liberal, trying to find another excuse for an american traitor who "his" party is running for President...
btw I sent this post to his AOL email too

1. Better move to Massachusetts, son.

I see y'all never had no "barbecue" in Massachusetts, sir. Nor been through a week in January when the temperature don't get above zero.

Slavery then is proof that the South is backwards now? Oh boy. I believe it was those Southern Democrats who had the BIG problem with civil rights. Republicans led the fight for civil rights in the South. Better brush up on your history, sonny.

So Mark, tell me, how did you feel about the White Southerner from Hope Arkansas?

If your premise were correct the Klan would still be running things down there. Civil rights would not be the law of the land, segregation would still be in place and the Democrat Party in the South would still be the favorite son.

Oh did I forget to mention it? The party in the south that backed the Klan, opposed Civil Rights, opposed integration in every way possible was the Southern Democrat Party and you lament its demise..... now I'm really worried about you.

At first I thought it was just a tongue and cheek piece to demonstrate that Republicans stood against slavery and segregation. But the last paragraphs shot down that theory.

Get lost, creep!

This guy Gelbart's been eating too much fatback with his grits.

For starters--if it were not for all those White Southerners, Al Gore would be President of the United States and the Nazis would likely have prevailed at Normandie.

It's true that the south needed a bit of encouragement to break out of its past, but the reason it worked was because white southerners of good will knew that it was the right thing to do.
