"We the people" are losing - (elected representatives serving special interests, not people)
OPINION EDITORIALS.COM ^ | APRIL 19, 2005 | JOHN TRUCANO

When Abraham Lincoln declared that government of the people, by the people, and for the people would not perish from the earth, he could not have anticipated the times we live in. A time when politicians would allow themselves to be corrupted by money from the rich and powerful, whose desire is to stomp all over the rights of we the people.

We the people, the citizenry, once the most powerful in this nation, have become the least powerful, and now the despised. Money is the name of the game, and money means power, and we the people have increasingly less and less of it, and our voices are being silenced. We the people are losing.

Credit card companies have stuffed the pockets of politicians for over 8 years to push through radical changes in the bankruptcy laws. This amounts to a basic denial of relief for most Americans. Interestingly, these changes to not apply to businesses filing bankruptcy, with their so called reorganization plans that allow them to walk away from their debts, often forgiving millions of dollars, which is hundreds of times higher than most personal bankruptcy filings. Did anyone find it strange to hear the sound bites of congressman lecturing us about how we need a return to personal responsibility? Is this not slightly hypocritical coming from scandal riddled congress? Are they really the best to lecture us on personal responsibility, or to lecture professional baseball players on ethics as they attempted to in their recent self righteous committee meetings concerning steroids?

As spring approaches and warmer weather nears, people begin to think of the upcoming travel season, and just like clockwork, gas prices begin to soar. We’re given lame excuses every year for why this happens, and now that the oil companies have congress securely in their back pocket, they don’t find it necessary to even offer that. Why is it if it is a simple matter of supply and demand, that they cannot anticipate the increased demand and increase production to meet it? It’s not brain surgery, increased travel occurs at the same time every year. Yet when we ask our congress to at least look into this matter, into the possibility that we may be being fleeced, they say there’s nothing they can do. They won’t even consider the possibility. Yes, this same congress that can micromanage our lives, and stick their noses into our personal business, and invade our privacy from our bedrooms to our boardrooms, suddenly when it comes to high gas prices they say there’s nothing they can do. Oh, really?

Could it be that as we the people become weaker and weaker, the special interests become stronger and stronger as they line their favorite congressmen’s pocket with their money? Could it also be that it’s gotten to the point that congress is no longer afraid to face us at the polls because they know their re-election can be assured by those whom they are actually representing?

It’s time for action. It’s time for us to exert the only power we have left and that is at the ballot box. Resist the slick campaign ads of the special interests candidate and vote them all out. It’s all we can do. We must do it before it’s too late, before we’re forced to say we’re not losing the battle, we’ve lost. Let’s we the people take back our nation.

This is the kind of thing that used to sound like a "call to arms" (figuratively speaking) to me, but not any more. I think now we've already lost the fight.

Well, if we start electing billionaires [to bribe them would be non-trivial even for seriously moneyed special interests] to public office, we would end up with Ross Perot and George Soros. Warren Buffett would be a bit better, but there is only one Warren Buffett, and not enough billionaires to fill all the elected slots.

We aren't losing a thing we never had.

Representatives have always belonged to some interest group. Their profession, their religion, whatever.

It IS a government of the people, by the people, and for the people!

The rest of us are just taxpayers!

Good post. The problem is that "we the people" haven't had anyone to vote for except the lesser of two evils, which sickens me. If you even talk voting third party on this forum, you're labeled a traitor or worse. I'm voting my conscious this next time and to hell with choosing the least crappy candidate. At least I will be able to sleep at night.
Good luck to you and keep up the good fight.

It naturally begets the question of whether these credit card companies charge usurious rates. And the answer is "of course!" Thus the reason one should pay off one's debt each month. Otherwise, you are acquiescing to letting yourself be mugged by those financial industry bums.

Thanks, tut. This is true. It's like an ambush of everything we as conservatives believe in. They are all about power and money, reserved for fat cats only. They are going to be so upset when the people walk away from them.

As conservatives, we elected Pres. Bush back into office to get the job done. Well...how many of us are writing, calling, faxing? Not just the President, but all of our leaders. The democrats would not have a leg to stand on if we DEMAND that they start working with the Republicans to get things done for us!! WE THE PEOPLE control the government, not the other way around. Let's get busy people.

Thanks for posting this Charlite!

Well, if the voters get really mad, they will vote in a whole new Congress. Gerrymandering and targeted campaign promises will cease to work.

It happened in 1932 and 1974.

It's not happening now. That must mean that overall, the voters are rather satisfied with the way things are.

And as lowly taxpayers we should just shut up, send in the money and dont worry where it goes, cause they know whats best for us.
Reminds me of Merle Haggard: "We'll all be drinking that free Bubble Up and eatin' that Rainbow Stew."

We are way beyond the point of a natural solution. Recognize the day you are living in, and all this will make a lot more sense.

Matthew 24
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

I was reading the other day that the Federal Reserve Bank, which is owned by member banks uses most of its profits for propaganda purposes. They issue grants to universtiy professors to keep them on their team, and they pay for "research" by analysts at the major banks to keep them on their team as well.

That is how the whole establishment ends up as cheerleaders for Wall Street. Those who don't play get no grants and become marginalized as cranks.

"The people we elect do not represent us they work for the lobbyists and special interest groups...follow the money."

It is the sad truth. I don't see how one could disagree with it. It's a blatant fact. I'm furious, too, because I feel like one of the helpless "sheeple." At least I'm bleating. (also probably "bleeding")
