DARFUR, Help is onthe way, finally (VANITY)

Now it can be told.

Although has not been widely reported, the real hang up over Darfur aid is that President Bashir refuses to allow the US Canada or any other non-African nation to send troops.

African Union troops only.

The African Union nations that are willing to send troops (South Africa, Nigeria and others) are standing behind a Kofi Annan sponsored deal in which they refuse to send troops unless the western governments pay them $157,000 per troop sent (far more than the actual cost).

It is pretty hard to say anything bad about Kofi and not be attacked for it yet no Western leader (except Canada's Paul Martin) has been willing to readily acquiesce to Kofi and the AU demanding what is in effect a "ransom" for the lives of The Darfur Christians.

It is a real diplomatic sticky wicket and nobody wants to stick his neck out. (hmm should we pay the ransom or should we expose what Kofi and the AU are REALLY doing?)

The Bush administration offered compromise. a NATO sponsored (and US funded) airlift would bring AU troops to Darfur. Sadly the matter was held up since April because France wanted the EU to sponsor the airlift apparently to underscore France's longstanding differences with NATO and recent differences with the US.

The Bush administration could ill-afford another dispute with France but people are dying and he is taking a beating in the polls on Darfur

US deputy secretary of state, Robert Zoellick stuck his neck out and Marine Gen. James. L. Jones, (the NATO supreme commander and the head of the U.S. European Command), thumbed their nose at France and announced to group of Rwandan officials and journalists that the NATO sponsored airlift will begin later this month.

France will just have to go suck eggs.

AT LONG LAST HELP IS ON THE WAY

I can hardly wait to find out what were gonna be excoriated for after sending our money, resources and manpower to help another disaster area. Like Bubba sez (with a little cry in 'is voice.): No good deed goes unpunished. Boo Hoo.

How many African Christians are there in the Darfur?

My understanding was that Christian area was further south, and those people have already been slaughtered and driven out. The Darfur was populated by African muslims, who have also been targeted by the Khartoum regime, and are now being slaughtered and driven out.

If anyone has a better understanding of the situation, I would like to be better informed.

In any case, I am glad something at least is finally to be done. I have been highly critical of the UN and Clinton for the genocide in Rwanda, and in total numbers the South Sudan genocide of the past decade is worse. And yet we have been just as unable to act, at least until now.

You're willing to pay blackmail money to Kofi at a rate of $157,00.00 per soldier?

It wasn't blackmail it was ransom.

Blackmail implies we were doing something wrong and Kofi threatened to reveal us.

Ransom implies the people of Darfur were being held hostage and would die unless we paid money.

It is blackmail pure and simple. Pay us the money or nobody helps.

Sounds wrong to me if that's the defination you are comfortable with.

I'm not willing to pay Kofi one red cent. The UN made a murderous mess of Rwanda, they are making one of the Congo right now, they were in bed with Saddam for a decade while Iraqi civilians died. Kofi has obstructed help to the South Sudan for a decade now, and now that he can't obstruct it anymore, he's trying to make a profit on it.

Kofi and his UN can't be trusted to run this operation or any other.

As far as I'm concerned, Kofi Annan has the blood of millions on his hands, and probably the money of tyrants in his bank account. We should take out an arrest warrant on him and his whole clique.

I would have paid it
(and then made a very public very undiplomatic stink about what is really going on.)

But as far as I can tell the only cash payments are coming from Canada. The US is limiting itself to airlifts, training and other aid that will actually go toward the Darfur mission.

Agreed. I'm ready for an arrest warrant to be issued, either here or from the World Court, charging him and all his underlings with genocide, crimes against humanity, etc, etc, just think of all the charges that could be laid on him and his ilk.

Makes my mouth water just to imagine a little justice being served.

Thanks for compiling all this and posting it. Very interesting.

It really hasn't been a secret about Sudan not allowing non-African troops to intervene. That has been in news reports for about a year. What is strange is that we are letting Sudan (the perpetrator of atrocities) tell us what we can and cannot do.
