" The Superdome was a living and dieing hell and none of us know what we would have done under such conditions."
Point well taken.
HOWEVER...
I might've sh*t on a floor, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have raped anyone... killed anyone... discharged firearms....
It's not like Georges and Ivan didn't let NOLA know what was gonna happen, and what was needed.
Again, not a dare, I love Freerepublic.com. Ban me if you wish, that which I speak, not in my name, is the simple truth.
Speakth in english lest thee be misunderstoodth and thee be chastized by thy teachers of the truth...
I'd say hazard pay.
Sure. I would've left.
So what's different between Austin and NO?
The Austin CC has food, water, plumbing, electricity, less people and rain is not pouring in from a giant hole in the roof.
"The Austin CC has food, water, plumbing, electricity, less people and rain is not pouring in from a giant hole in the roof."
And Texans with guns... although in Austin they have to import those from west Texas.
Makes me wonder how I survived the Army :-)
So you're saying that the people are the same, but because the conditions are livable the people are able to control their behavior?
Wasn't the Superdome originally opened to "special needs" folks? And didn't the city have to approve each person that evacuated himself/herself to the Dome?
I'm sure the ratio of guests to police is much lower in those places than it was in the Superdome. Besides which, they probably figure the Texas authorities aren't going to put up with any of that stuff, not even in Austin.
Apparently not. A few hundred armed Guardsmen would have come in mighty handy this time.
I like to think I would have discharged firearms under those conditions. Some folks just need shooting. Rapists are right at the top of the list.
I also think I'd try to at least go outside and hang my a$$ over the rail. It might not be any more sanitary, but at least it would be outside in the free air.
You echo my thoughts from first visuals of the debacle.
No BS is right, and right on your comments are.
[IF]
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!
--Rudyard Kipling
Although Austin is certainly not as gun friendly as west Texas, or East Texas for that matter, the guys at this place might take issue with the need to import gun owners from other parts of the state.
They have two locations in the greater Austin area, North in Pflugerville, and South on US 290. There are several gun shops, small and large, and Saxet Gun shows has a monthly show, now at the Crockett Convention Center, this weekend in fact. It's not the largest show, but it's nearly as big as their San Antonio show. See ya there!
'course I live a mite farther north, in Killeen. We have more gun shops in the three "city" area than Austin has, I think. One is Guns Galore, which advertises on the local cable, saying the have over 1700 guns on display and over 3,000 in stock.
No bulldozers. Front end loaders would be used, after the demolition charges are set off.
Would living in such conditions turn you into a rapist, a pedophile who would abuse a two; TWO year old child. I think not. Civilized people are just that because they draw certain peramiters in their lives which they will not cross. There are some things that are right for all people in all circumstances at all times.
Yes. . .thanks; know the building needs to ultimately implode - should the decision go in that direction rather than 'sanitize/repair'. . .and was only offering here, a 'manner of speaking'.
It does almost seem easier and wiser to start over. . .but that is just my 'sentiment' and HO. . .so to speak ;^)
"Even animals have the good sense not to piss and crap in their own homes."
We have a Section 8 living a few townhouses down from us.
...lets just say I was not surprised by events in the Dome and leave it at that.
