American Hiroshima

“First call, first call to Colors.”

Lieutenant Commander Thomas Carter stood at attention on the flight deck of USS RONALD REAGAN. He waited in silent anticipation for the first strains of the “Star Spangled Banner,” the signal for the petty officers of the watch to begin raising the extra large flag, only displayed on Sundays and holidays.

Tom loved weekend duty—a heart-pumping bike ride up the Strand, bounding up to the Quarterdeck (“Good morning, Sir!), shower, uniform, coffee, Quarters and then observing Colors—that bright, broad and magnificent flag rising over the blue-green water of San Diego Bay under the sleek arch of the Coronado Bridge.

A spark of light caught his eye, low, just outside the oil containment boom between the REAGAN and the aircraft carrier NIMITZ. It’s a little early for pleasure craft to be sightseeing, he thought, but not so unusual, I guess, with three carriers at North Island—quite a sight since USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN pulled in yesterday for a short visit.

Tom saw a large, bearded man dressed in white stand up in the boat. He appeared to be shaking his fist—shouting something—jumping up and down . . . and then a BLINDING FLASH . . .

A typical "Minuteman" story, and a risible joke.

The reason why the Qaedists think of attacking us with nuclear weapons, but will stay their hand, is rather simple: once you attack the United States with the Big One, all bets are off-there is no level of diplomatic restraint that would keep us from responding in overwhelming kind. The Air Force intel guy is right: don't lose sleep over this.

Qaeda doesn't have the personnel to maintain complicated nuclear weapons. The Iranians do, and they'd be first on the Hit Parade were they to peddle nukes to Qaeda. Only they wouldn't. Major powers don't invest billions in uranium enrichment and then give the product of that investment to some damn Saudi playboy. The Iranians are interested in playing Judenrein with the Shahad 3 missile and have their own plans for the Jews. I'm sure the feelings are mutual from the Israelis, btw.

The notion among liberals that America would do nothing because we have no "address" to respond to is a risible joke. Several tens of millions of Muslims, probably upwards to 100 million, would be dead after the first couple of waves of American retaliatory strikes. Vast reaches of the Islamic heartland would be as desert-uninhabitable wasteland. Bin Laden would have achieved his dream: the 9th Century restored. But the Islamic World as it is today would cease to exist.

Contrary to what a lot of you people on FreeRepublic believe, democracies are not suicide pacts. Democracies and Republics are capable of the most ruthless and violent action when time comes to survive in the face of the Other. That's what many don't realize, especially in the Islamic World.

However, bin Laden is an intelligent man, despite the fanaticism he uses to gull his credulous followers. He knows better than to cross the Rubicon.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

I agree, if they had them, they'd have used them. OTOH, they could get a hold of sufficient pile at some point in time, and would use it thereafter.

No idea who the author. Probably some book author peddling his thriller. You know how those guys can be.

Yeah, and with no return address, and no claim of responsibility, you actually think we're going to just nuke every large city the islamic world. Now THAT idea is a "risible joke."

Hopefully the first order given by the new president was for the Atomic retaliation/total incinceration of the appropriate islaomofacist supporting countries.

Sadly, you underestimate your own people.

In the wake of an atomic attack of such a nature as described in the above fantasy, the choice given to the surviving American administration would simply be this: Us or Them?

We would choose us. It's that simple. What makes you believe otherwise? It would simply be a matter of the survival of the American state as a national entity. When did you start thinking like a liberal?

When atomic weapons are used as instruments of mass terror, the point is understood that two can play at that game. It's that simple. The notion of legalisms cease when mass killing begins. Or haven't you read The Peloponneasian War yet? Athens and Sparta existed as Allies against Persia and fought with each other from time to time in ritualistic, seasonal combat. However, once the Peloponneasian War began, notions of restraint fell away (viz: Athens' barbarism towards Melos). When nuclear weapons are used against the American people, restraint will go out the window.

Restraint falls away when survival is at stake. That's what you don't understand.

Most of what is understood as the Islamic heartland would simply cease to exist. Don't believe me if you don't wish to, but those Americans who did survive would expect some sort of retaliation in response. And they would get it. You may not believe this, but our leaders tend to be just as American as you. They were born here too, you know.

Bin Laden is not mad. He is rational. He is a fanatic, like Hitler. That will be his undoing. All fanatics undo themselves in the end.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

After September 11, we naively believed that the pursuit of terror abroad would keep us safe while we turned our heads and ignored thousands of strangers streaming across our borders every day. Our luck finally ran out.

We have been screaming about this for YEARS yet for political reasons both the GOP and the 'Rats have pretended that the Titanic was just fine.

With any luck, they have agents out pretending to be terrorists trying to buy them, too.

Except for the paragraph that began, "Tom loved duty weekend" - NOBODY likes duty weekend - it is all too plausible.

If this scenario came to pass, nuclear weapons would be raining down on Arabic countries.

Correct. The War Against Islam would begin in earnest.

It would be an atomic war.

Yes, but we knew it was real Uranium.

U235 gun-bombs are indeed very simple, but they are
also not compact. And the hard part is preparing the
fissile material. Spoofing buyers for complete weapons
is still relatively easy to do.

If they want to smuggle in a nuke all they have to do is wrap it in cocaine and bring it in through the Port of Miami.

Thus, John Snow, fifth in line of succession, was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.

That might be the scariest line in the whole scenario! ;)
