Cool.

The first WU (work unit) may take a few hours to complete.

The first WU (work unit) may take a few hours to complete.

Mine says 28 minutes for the first one. I figure that's a function of CPU speed.

The project, called Folding@home, is a distributed computing project which was launched on October 1, 2000 by Stanford University

"Distributed computing" allows the computing power of thousands of anonymous users to speed up scientific projects. The Stanford University team makes a list of calculations (mathematical simulations) to be worked out and a server allocates these calculations to different users who have previously downloaded a tiny software. Stanford thus benefits from a huge computing power (equivalent to a few thousand expensive supercomputers), power which is donated freely by the project members.

Users simply download an application that runs protein-folding simulations on their desktop computers when the systems are idle.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Thanks for the explanation. (and for not getting mad at my sarcasm. :-)

With a little help, Team FreeRepublic can move into the Top 1000 teams.

I have been using Folding for a while. How do I join? The FAQ says to add the team number on the configuration page, but I don't see any place to enter it.

Will FR get my existing work units?

I just added a machine.

It adds an icon to the system tray. I right click it, it comes up with a configure option. That allows you change your name and team. I added 36120 and I'm part of the FR team.

No tray icon here, only the Google toolbar config choice.

That said, now that I have to pay heating bills, I had to turn off the six 'puters running 24/7. Saves $30/mo in electricity.

The computers are electric heat, if you keep them indoors.

Here's an image of what I got.

See the tray Icon and options.

Also realize, I just loaded this on my new computer about an hour ago. heh.

Maybe I need to download a new compute client, I've had this one a year or two. I have nothing like your screen. Have to wait til morning now.

Thanks

I got the client from http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html which is linked up thread.

As a note, it spikes your CPU to max. I put a Zalman http://stores.tomshardware.com/rating_getprodrev.php/product_id=5049939/id_type=M//
cooler on my CPU, which is a giant copper brick. heh. Running this client jacks the temp up to 41C which, all things considerd is low, but compared to idle temp of 29c, folks need to make sure their CPU cooler can handle a hot CPU. The latest INTEL machines need a tremendous amount of ooling.

I haven't seen the 'foldingathome control panel" - how do I find it?
