Clinton warns of rising anti-Islamic feeling

Former US president Bill Clinton warned of rising anti-Islamic prejudice, comparing it to historic anti-Semitism as he condemned the publishing of cartoons depicting Prophet Mohammed in a Danish newspaper.

"So now what are we going to do? ... Replace the anti-Semitic prejudice with anti-Islamic prejudice?" he said at an economic conference in the Qatari capital of Doha.

"In Europe, most of the struggles we've had in the past 50 years have been to fight prejudices against Jews, to fight against anti-Semitism," he said.

Clinton described as "appalling" the 12 cartoons published in a Danish newspaper in September depicting Prophet Mohammed and causing uproar in the Muslim world.

"None of us are totally free of stereotypes about people of different races, different ethnic groups, and different religions ... there was this appalling example in northern Europe, in Denmark ... these totally outrageous cartoons against Islam," he said.

The cartoons, including a portrayal of the prophet wearing a time-bomb-shaped turban, were reprinted in a Norwegian magazine in January, sparking uproar in the Muslim world where images of the prophet are considered blasphemous.

Clinton criticised the tendency to generalise negative news of Islamic militancy.

"Because people see headlines that they don't like (they will) apply that to a whole religion, a whole faith, a whole region and a whole people?" he asked.

A wide campaign to boycott Danish products has swept through Muslim countries as many governments and organisations have demanded an apology from the Danish government.

Clinton said the United States should continue to push for a Middle East settlement, in light of the stunning win by the radical Islamist movement Hamas in last week's Palestinian elections.

"It is important that ... we continue to be heavily involved in the resolution of the issues in the Middle East. (But) it depends in part on what Hamas says and does," he said.

"When we (US) are involved, fewer people (have) died," he said.

US President George W. Bush on Friday warned of cuts in US aid to the Palestinians if Hamas does not dissolve its armed wing and renounce threats against Israel.

This man is a lunatic. He didn't do anything to Osama when he was in power. And now he fails to bring the muslim extremists to task for their doctrine of killing. How does he address the teachings of the Koran to kill all the infidels? Why wouldn't any sane person be against that? He just needs another intern and fade off to the dustbin of history with his pal Gary Hart.

Typical Democrat, condemn the victims, defend the murderous barbarians. And these lunatics think we are EVER going to trust them in charge again?

Reading this, I wonder if Hillary thinks the same thing. Are they running as co-presidents again?

" Replace the anti-Semitic prejudice with anti-Islamic prejudice?"

Not liking someone who chops off heads and is trying to kill you is not being prejudice. It is quite normal I would think...

Good ol' Bill - still siding with the other side after all these years.

Still think the Kosovo campaign was a success, Bill? Oh, yeah, that's right, you think making Islamist radicals stronger is a success.

"...these totally outrageous cartoons against Islam,"

What on earth is he whittling on about? It is not the same as anti-semitism. This is a legitimate comment on the rise and rise of a fascist ideology. If Muslims cannot get over a few jokes, what chance of living side by side in a pluralist democracy that values free speech?

I think Bill is saying: Killing 6 million Jews in an organized genocide was wrong. And newspaper cartoons showing Mohammad's face are just as bad ...

The last time that I checked, prejudice is defined as to judge BEFORE knowing the FACTS.

In the case of the islamofascists, it seems to me that there is ample evidence of just how barbaric these animals are.

Note to the former "Chicken in Chief": Take a hike, maggot. Make sure that you take your b*tch with you.

How ought civilized people respond to members of a religious sect that preach hatred, revenge, and violent death and then practice what they preach, often to horrifying effect? If Clinton were being honest (a foreign concept, that), he would admit that it is hardly irrational for people to fear or feel antagonistic toward such barbarians, nor is it morally wrong to identify them as such.

Flashback Headline:

Neville Chamberlain warns of anti-Nazi feeling.

That is the true comparison. As I recall, the Jews weren't blowing up buildings and killing people with suicide bombers in Berlin. They were just convenient scapegoats selected by a madman to support his rise to power. They serve the same purpose today for the madmen in the Middle East.

The comparison that Clinton makes is at best simply silly and at worst incredibly naive. Clinton as the neo-Chamberlain is the real message here.

You have to remember that not only does the former "Chicken in Chief" loathe the military, he obviously and evidently loathes the country the the military is tasked to protecting. Afterall, one cannot seperate their feelings for the military AND their mission, right?

I don't really believe Clinton hates his country. He doesn't think like that. (Hillary, on the other hand.....) I think Bill just likes to hear himself speak, particularly when he can say things that sound thoughtful, sensitive and (best) nuanced. In this case, he is just spoon-feeding a soothing tonic to a European audience that's eager to pacify the swelling Islamic ranks within their own (dying) nations.
