Katyn Massacre

Stalin's Killing Field

One of the earliest--and certainly the most infamous--mass shootings of prisoners of war during World War II did not occur in the heat of battle but was a cold-blooded act of political murder. The victims were Polish officers, soldiers, and civilians captured by the Red Army after it invaded eastern Poland in September 1939. Strictly speaking, even the Polish servicemen were not POWs. The USSR had not declared war, and the Polish commander in chief had ordered his troops not to engage Soviet forces. But there was little the Poles could do. On 28 September, the USSR and Nazi Germany, allied since August, partitioned and then dissolved the Polish state. They then began implementing parallel policies of suppressing all resistance and destroying the Polish elite in their respective areas. The NKVD and the Gestapo coordinated their actions on many issues, including prisoner exchanges. At Brest Litovsk, Soviet and German commanders held a joint victory parade before German forces withdrew westward behind a new demarcation line. 1

This is an interesting, but long read. Hopefully, someday if there are any guilty higher ups they will be punished.

We must reserve the term tragedy for acts of nature, this is an horrific crime against God and humanity. I regret nothing quite so much as the Allied lack of resolve at the end of German aggression. The Allies should have taken on the Soviet State and freed the remainder of Europe, sometimes what is expedient for the time being is more of a curse for our children and their tomorrow.

Point well taken. Every time I read about the U.S. Army colonel who alerted US officials to the truth, only to be rebuffed I get angry.

Someone should shove this up Walter Duranty's ass.

Perhaps we could exhume some of the remains from the massacre and drop them on Pinch Sulz's desk as a subtle reminder?

I think I've made it clear I do not want to discuss anything with you because you cannot engage in rational discourse. For the tenth time, please do not ping me again.

For those who can read, this is what I was referring to when I stated "knowledge of":

"Katyn played a convoluted role in US politics and US-Soviet relations. Two US servicemen, brought from a POW camp in Germany, were at Katyn in 1943, when Berlin held an international news conference there to publicize the atrocity. The ranking officer was Col. John H. Van Vliet, a fourth-generation West Pointer. After returning to Washington in 1945, he wrote a report concluding that the Soviets, not the Germans, were responsible. He gave the report to Maj. Gen. Clayton Bissell, Gen. George Marshall's assistant chief of staff for intelligence, who deep-sixed it. Years later, Bissell defended his action before Congress, contending that it was not in the US interest to embarrass an ally whose forces were still needed to defeat Japan. "

I did not ping you and answer the question. You made this post and I am questionaing it.

Are you suggesting that the US was involved in the cover up of Katyn?

PS - You suggested repeated requests to me to not ping you. This is not true. Perhaps you are confusing this with your alter ego x5452 request to not ping ;-).

Answer is in post #18 ask someone to explain it to you.

And as to your other statements:

How many times am I going to have to ask you NOT to ping me?"

Let me make it real clear to you - don't ping me, or respond to anything I post. You make it damn near impossible for anyone to have a rational discussion and are extremely childish in your behavior. Therefore, I have absolutely no desire to discuss anything with you.

It's interesting that those words also appear on one of the great post-Stalin war memorials outside St.Petersburg and were the words of Olga Berggolsky,"No one is forgotten, nothing is forgiven". Relative to Katyn, after 1940 the 15,000 Polish officers were never seen alive. In 1943 the Germans disinterred over 4000 corpses, most of whom had been shot in the back of the head. The Nazis and the Soviets blamed each other. It was only in 1989 that the Soviet government admitted that they had executed all 15,000. An interesting aside to this horror is the fact that by the end of the war the Allies knew what had happened -- but by then Stalin was an ally and they chose to let the matter drop. So, for a long time this was "forgotten".

T.L. Sink makes a good observation:

"An interesting aside to this horror is the fact that by the end of the war the Allies knew what had happened -- but by then Stalin was an ally and they chose to let the matter drop. So, for a long time this was "forgotten".

I posted a similiar observation and received an irate post by the usual suspect:

"Ae (sic) you implicating the US?"

Either this person doesn't realize the US was led by the socialist Franklin D. Roosevelt, or is defending Roosevelt's policy to ignore Soviet atrocities (Katyn for example) and hand Stalin Eastern Europe on a platter. It's no coincidence that Roosevelt's birthday was celebrated in the Soviet Union..

Sometimes the pseudo-conservatives slip up and let their socialist leanings show... No amount of labeling others "traitors" "commies" "Russians' Wives Club" etc., will erase the pseudo-conservatives' posting of socialist commentary and using Red-Brown (Communist-Nationalist) sources as "fact" and then denying it. Sources, by the way, that are not that easy to find unless you know what you're looking for..

You give Roosovelt to much credit calling him socialist, he was Stalin Lite and the only thing that saved the US from eventual Sovietization (just look at his economic policies and forced migrations of people) was WW2.

Soviets yes were masters of forward deployment and action. GRU had combat role here.

Criticism is of the Soviet Union and its barbarous nature. Actually forward deployment with neutralization of forces is accepted technique in modern warfare we should use it in Iran now to save 100,000 of our lives when we go in.
