I'm heading home in a bit after an enjoyable event at Oberlin College kicking off the Ronald Reagan Lecture Series. It was refreshing to see a healthy, engaged group of College Republicans on campus, and some wonderful professors on their side grounded in reality. C-SPAN covered the speech, which will probably air in the next week or so. I think "Unhinged" is having the salutary effect of making liberal students very self-conscious about their behavior at conservative speakers' events. Before I spoke, students passed around anonymous flyers, which read in part:
This flyer is written to inform you that the content of tonight's lecture conducted by Michelle Malkin may be highly, personally offensive to some...we would like to warn against possible insensible and politically negative behavior on the part of those responding to Malkin's presence. We do not believe that having her speak here is in any way a means to promote intelligent, or meaningful political discourse. Rather, we are worried that it may have the exact opposite effect...Negative reactions to Malkin could lead to highly negative statements about Oberlin on a national stage. While it is your right to respond in the manner you see fit, we encourage you to take into consideration the possible consequences of such responses, and to attempt to engage the speaker in a civilized, rational, and intelligent manner that we are all capable of. Remember that you can always leave the lecture should you feel uncomfortable or offended.
In other words: Try very hard to behave, or you'll prove her point.
The best moment of the event came during Q&A, when an Asian-American student stood up and said she was afraid to join the College Republicans because of peer pressure. She confirmed that groupthink on campus was strong, among both students and professors. After the lecture, she took the plunge and signed up with the CRs. Made the whole trip worth it!
Anything that makes libnuts...well, nuts is ok by me. And if that anything happens to be a pretty young asiatic goddess conservative, all the better!
I'm gonna run out and but it today!
Translation: Open discussion is furthered by suppressing open discussion.
Political correctness is despotism. It is not about debate. The issues have already been decided by damned intellectuals.
Michelle got a good reception at Oberlin College? I am shocked, and I mean that.
Isn't Oberlin one of the top leftie campuses in America?
I am just shocked to learn that there are College Republicans at Oberlin. Schools don't get much more out on the edge of the leftist scale than Oberlin.
In the left's point of view, as we all know, is that the end justifies the means. It is about time they started getting nervous about their actions. Gotta love that Michelle.
Michelle is one smart cookie! She's put the lefties in a position where they can't act like themselves without proving her point. She's turned their own misconduct against them.
Not am I only going to buy "Unhinged" today, I might even REVIEW it. Normally I avoid political books, even those written by conservatives, like the plague because they are often boring as hell. However, because of the subject matter, I will make a rare exception with Malkin's book.
I know Oberlin College well. I used to camp out a lot at nearby Findley state park in Ohio a lot about 10 years ago so I often drove right by Oberlin and frequently stopped there to buy stuff. My impression of Oberlin is that there were a lot of wannabee beatniks and hippies there. Even 10 years ago both groups were WAY out of date. Don't know what the situation is like there now but I can guess it is still dominated by pretentious liberals.
It's like one of those old jungle movies where the safari gets nervous over the constant sound of tribal drums. But it's when the drums (libs) go silent that it's time to worry.
I hope she has strong security.
Just love Michelle. She is awesome!
