Following the sighting of an unusual meteor nearby, the residents of Maple Street are held firmly in the grasp of growing fear and paranoia when their electric power, telephone lines and motor vehicles all suddenly fail to function for no explainable reason.

This works because it's believable. People, when faced with something so extraordinary they cannot easily explain or resolve often look for a scapegoat to blame, a target at which to lash out their increasing frustration. The growing mob hysteria we see here isn't so far beneath the veneer of civilization as we'd all like to think. This episode shows humanity's ugly side: what happens when we let fear, suspicion and the mob mentality of the crowd take precedence over logic and reason. What then might we do?

The cast here is more than capable with Claude Akins, Jack Weston and Barry Atwater being the stand outs. The final closing narration by Rod Serling is quite different as he laments that the problems of paranoia and mass hysteria aren't limited to "The Twilight Zone" alone.
