Okay, I am no longer wearing a Fanny Pack. I am now wearing a Handy Pack. Same thing but with a new name and, hopefully, more manly image. In any event, I can't live without my Handy Pack. Too much convenient stuff I can pack away in there.

former gifted children

If they're at DU, they're certainly formerly "gifted", but still children.

i went to lutheran schools my whole life- and there was no effort made to seek out nor accomodate "gifted" students- after all, god loves everyone equally, right...? had i been in public schools, i would most likely have been skipped ahead- instead i was pretty much told to "hold back" to be fair to the other kids.

The catholics were pimps, they never cudda outfought the baptists. But I didn't know til this very day, it was the lutherns all along.

I can remember being told I was "gifted". I can remember being told that teh sky was teh limit. It was all a lie because society today no longer rewards the genius

Actually, society still does reward "teh" genius, assuming "teh" genius actually does something with his talent and doesn't simply expect "teh" world to heap praise and adulation on him just because he has been given "teh" label of "gifted".

i know there are lots and lots folks at du who are what the pinheads call gifted and talented. at the risk of sounding like a braggart, i am, at the age of 51, finally realizing that my membership in this group has kinda screwed up my life. living among "normal" people (no offense intended) can be extremely difficult. most of us wish we were just normal folks. most of us deny our gifts, and consequently make a lot of bad decisions in life. gifted and successful go together a lot less frequently than most folks would think. gifted and miserable, or troubled, probably outweighs that by a lot. i think it would be great if there was a du group where we could hang out with our peers. anybody?

So how does it feel to be a tool?

I know as a child I imagined myself as being an alien from an advanced society who was implanted in my human mother

That's healthy and well adjusted.

I was unmedicated at the time which didn't help

Translation: I'm taking drugs to "cure" myself from being a "genius".

I can remember being told that teh sky was teh limit. It was all a lie because society today no longer rewards the genius (I say that without any trace of snobbery, it's simply a description), it no longer rewards the free-thinker or teh maverick, it rewards the mediocre, the safe and...

...the geniuses who can spell "the" consistently.

I am now a classic underacheiver who has struggeled with depression and substance abuse issues for most of my adult life.

Well, duh. I mean, isn't this a checkbox you have to tick off right next to the "I agree to abide by the rules" one in order to join DU?

And he's wonders why he can't "fit in"?

Let them eat cake.

Well, I was tested at 140 and put in a G&T program too, for a little while. I was as lost as Bart Simpson and when my best friend wasn't there I stood in a corner and cried. They finally gave it up and let me go back to class. I was indeed an emotionally retarded, maladjusted nerd who limped through high school and irritated people in the Navy. It can take a while to find your niche in life, and it can be all too easy to decide that the people to blame are the core of the American ethos, therefore you decide to be a liberal and hate everything America stands for. That was me in my 20s. It took a long time before I realized that all I was doing was wishing a new, even more cruel regime would be instituted that would value me above others. Once I realized my politics were little more than vengeful pouting, I got over it.
