Perhaps it's time to recolonize the Middle East. If we get our NATO allies and Russia together with us on the same page and invade the entire Muslim Middle East and re-establish European run colonial governments, we could save a lot of money on oil and put an end to government sponsored terrorism. Together, this alliance would have 90% of the world's military might. Without the mother's milk of oil revenue, it will be far more difficult fot terrorists to obtain the financing for nuclear weapon development or purchase. Russia could administer Iran, France could administer Syria, Britain could administer Egypt and Jordan, Italy could administer Lybia, and the US could administer Iraq and the Arabian peninsula. Western oil companies would run the oil fields and all financial/political power would be denied to radical muslims. Maybe in the next century that area might be ready for independence. In the meantime, bring back the colonies.
Ya know, all the libs say we're stealing their oil. At least, we could say, 'yep! we sure are, now' so all this screaming and moaning isn't for nothing.
Unrealistic, I think is the most diplomatic thing I can say about this piece.

The Western European influence in the Middle East did not come from the few decades they had mandates in the region after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
Your comment was more polite than some people who disagree. It is unrealistic.
The author does not seem to know much about Middle Eastern (southwestern Asian) history.
Muslims aren't worth the trouble.
After two or three major US cities get nuked, you will think back to your comment and say "We should have taken control of the area before it was too late."
It is not that they aren't worth the trouble, it's that our cities are worth the trouble.
It could make for a fun movie, but in real life it's politically impossible to assemble the willpower to do this.
The author is probably a mild racist (not intentional, but one). There is no mention about Japan especially, but even some of the nics such as Korea, Taiwan (though China would probably object), etc. China also could be used if Russia is going to.

This is the dumbest thing I've heard this week.
Wow, I'm impressed when someone comes up with an original idea.
The Middle East isn't worth the trouble. I don't know if you've been there, but it's nowhere I'd want to colonize. Most of it is general wasteland, whereas some garden spots, like Qatar, looks like the surface of Mars. Once you get north of Baghdad it's pleasent enough, if you like the Iowa-Nebraska kinda look.
Still, I'm all for the alternate fuel Manhattan project. I'd rather spend 500 billion on that than to keep bombing the place. Once the oil stops fueling their economies, they'll fall back on their second most lucrative industry, which appeared to me to be sheepherding. Shortly thereafter, the entire region will become as important as Tanzania, and we'll never hear from them again.
The only time all those countries will be on the same page will be at the end of times. Not a bad plan though.
Your ad hominom comments aside, the Russians would be able to be enlisted precisely because of their irritation with the Chechans, and it is a good point that Japan could also be enlisted.
