taken up by what appeared to be nothing more than a jumble of stacked books covered with my six-year-olds army toys -- tanks, helicopters, soldiers large, small and Risk-sized, with a few cowboys and Vikings thrown in for good measure. To me, a nonsensical disaster.

When at peace, prepare for war. When at war, prepare for peace. One can only fail when one is ill-prepared, and yes, it seems nonsensical.

The problem in the Middle East is that one party (Islam) hasn't made any preparations for peace during this war. If we keep slamming them, they eventually will but, it's anyone's guess as to when.

The degree of 'kick-ass' may affect the length of any subsequent peace. Say some rogue state (Iran) cracks a nuke, we follow with supernukes. Peace will follow, might go 100-150 years. Which would mean to any prudent nation 100 or so years of preparing for the next war. And the beat goes on. (/sonny&cher)

Have not missed one single week since Oct 4 2001

Awwwww! Spoilsport! You left the tale unfinished. He had to have given you "the look", or something, when he found out you put his war away. {;^)

Katie Couric's premier evening news broadcast yesterday evening started with a special report heralding the Taliban's renewed presence in Afghanistan. In seemingly reverent tones reminiscent of whisperings in the midst of a church service, the correspondent explained how just last year the Taliban had been driven out, but are now back with a vengeance, just miles from a U.S. military base. "And they're not afraid to operate out in the open either."

It's the sick meanderings of supposed journalists that can't find a positive thing to cover, that leads me to think they have never played for a team, don't know what it would be like to root for the home team and probably think this is all one big silly spoof, not really mattering who wins or loses.

We must win this. That means that as a nation we should ideally be united. Instead those who think Bush is the devil incarnate, incessantly tear away at the effort, doing their best to demoralize everyone but the terrorists.

Whether Bush is the Great Satan or not, whether Cheney is really Beelzebub, whether Rumsfeld is the Grinch Who Stole Christmas, there is one thing that rises above it all. We either win this and put and end to the notion terrorists can reign supreme, or we surrender our futures once and for all.

Somehow it just doesn't matter all that much to me what Bush really is. I know what terrorists really are, and Bush or no Bush, they want our freedom, and are willing to die to take it away.

That's all I need to know.

It's something Cindy Shehan will never know, for the woman isn't capable of that much understanding. Like we all didn't know that.

Thanks for your thoughts. It is important this issue is kept in front of us. It's important we ponder what the stakes are. It's important that we be determined to win. It's important for us to resolve to drag the Katie Courics, the Cindy Shehan's and the rest of the fruitcakes along with us to victory. It's that important.

Great piece, Anna.

I also think the media's incessant attempts to depict even the smallest setback as just another step to our inevitable defeat is wearing thin.

Cindy Sheehan, Howard Dean, all of them - the more these crazy aunts are let out of the attic, the better.

Most of us will never forget.

Good to see you around Anna.

"Oh," an acquaintance of mine pooh-poohed me after I'd quoted it through giggles, "you just believe that's true because you're pro-war." No, frankly I'm simply pro-victory, and only sometimes but not always are they the same thing.

You need to change acquaintances. Relatives you are stuck with.

You should ask my SO about "Chomsky House."

I like to put a link to a relevant article at the top of my front page on the anniversary of the attack.

This is it for 2006. Five years.
