DUmmie FUnnies 11-18-06 ("IT'S GOT TO BE SECRETLY BOUGHT")
DUmmie FUnnies ^ | November 18, 2006 | Charles Henrickson and PJ-Comix

Posted on 11/18/2006 4:05:31 PM PST by PJ-Comix

(A little change of format in this edition of the DUmmie FUnnies... In yesterday's EDITION of the DUmmie FUnnies I noted that John Edwards' 6 year-old son had to be carefully taught to make fun of poorer kids for wearing shoes sold at Wal-Mart. I suggested that a certain Lutheran songmeister write a song parody on this theme based on the tune of You've Got To Be Carefully Taught from the musical play, "South Pacific." I was referring, of course, to Charles Henrickson, a Lutheran minister from St. Louis who has a penchant for writing song parodies, the number of which are legion. Well, even Charles exceeded my expectations with this TERRIFIC song parody titled, "IT'S GOT TO BE SECRETLY BOUGHT." I am sure you will agree that this HILARIOUS song parody MUST be given the widest play possible. It would be perfect for play on radio talk shows such as Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, etc.. So without further adieu, I now present Henrickson's "IT'S GOT TO BE SECRETLY BOUGHT.")

You've got to be taught to use your fame
Your wealth and your power to get a game
But it's got to be done without harming your name--
It's got to be secretly bought.

You've got to be taught to scorn and scold
Those people whose shoes are cheaply sold
At Wal-Mart, whose heart is so corporate cold--
You've got to be duly distraught.

You've got to be taught to not stand in line
Before you are six or seven or nine
To act like John Edwards and think you're so fine--
You've got to get more than you ought!
You've got to be carefully taught.

Anybody out there with musical abilities? I have a feeling that if this song parody were produced in audio, it would become a big hit.

p.s. My mother just called me as I was about to post this song parody. Since she is a HUGE fan of "South Pacific" I sang the parody to her on the phone. Even though she is a Democrat, she LOVED this song parody.

p.p.s. It seems like my mother's fire ant problem has been solved. Fire ants are retreating and dying in droves.

Let me know if you want on the DUmmie FUnnies PING List.

Here are the lyrics with a MIDI link so you can sing along:

IT'S GOT TO BE SECRETLY BOUGHT
Tune: "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught"

You've got to be taught to use your fame
Your wealth and your power to get a game
But it's got to be done without harming your name--
It's got to be secretly bought.

You've got to be taught to scorn and scold
Those people whose shoes are cheaply sold
At Wal-Mart, whose heart is so corporate cold--
You've got to be duly distraught.

You've got to be taught to not stand in line
Before you are six or seven or nine
To act like John Edwards and think you're so fine--
You've got to get more than you ought!
You've got to be carefully taught.

IF appropriate compensation could be worked out with the author, of course. :-)

As with all my other parodies, I don't want anyone else using my stuff to make money without me. I still remember six years ago, when my "The Palm Beach Pokey" was getting used all over the country without my permission, usually without attribution, and without me making a penny off of it.

I still remember lots of folks using and STEALING Registered's SORE/LOSERMAN logo. I even saw CNN interviewing some printer who claimed HE invented that SORE/LOSERMAN logo. I almost pulled an Elvis on my TV set when I saw that.

Here's John Edwards at the local Wal-Mart's "Health and Beauty" section. It was Free Makeover Day (thus the word CHANGE), and the nice sales associate was helping him try on different kinds of makeup. (See the word MAKEUP on the sign.)

There's actually social pressure in the kid world about shopping discount. Kids made fun of mine about wearing stuff from K-Mart, though they were about 9 or 10, not 6.

I missed out on the "Palm Beach Pokey", Charles, because I wasn't a FReeper then. Repost?

I wrote it just a few days after Election 2000 and posted it on a couple non-FR forums. It spread like wildfire. Soon it was all over the country. Somebody told me that people were singing it at marches and mentioning it on a forum called "Free Republic." That's how I found out about this place and how I became a FReeper . . . six years ago YESTERDAY! Dang, I missed my FRanniversary!

Anyhoo, here's the song that got me started doing political parodies:

THE PALM BEACH POKEY
Tune: "The Hokey Pokey"

You put your stylus in,
You put your stylus out,
You put your stylus in,
And you punch Buchanan out.
You do the Palm Beach Pokey
And you turn the count around,
That's what it's all about!

You put the Gore votes in,
You put the Bush votes out,
You put the Gore votes in,
And you do another count.
You do the Palm Beach Pokey
And you turn the count around,
That's what it's all about!

You bring your lawyers in,
You drag the whole thing out,
You bring your lawyers in,
And you put it all in doubt.
You do the Palm Beach Pokey
And you turn the count around,
That's what it's all about!

You let your doctors spin,
You let the pundits spout,
You let your doctors spin,
And your people whine and pout.
You do the Palm Beach Pokey
And you turn the count around,
That's what it's all about!

You do the Palm Beach Pokey,
You do the Palm Beach Pokey,
You do the Palm Beach Pokey,
That's what it's all about!

Maybe your mom would like my other parody based on a "South Pacific" song, the one about how Pied Piper Piper always manages to change course when the tide of opinion goes against him in DUmmieland:

SELF-RECANTED EVENING
Tune: "Some Enchanted Evening"

Self-recanted evening,
When you see the flip-flops,
You may see where Pitt stops
Across the DUmmieland.
And somehow you know,
You know even then,
That sometime you'll see him
Recant once again.

Self-aggrandized weaving,
Bloviating windbag,
Going where the wind blows,
Not knowing where to stand.
He'll write to the left--
That's left to go right--
Will's so busy dancing,
He can't sleep at night.

Who can explain Pitt?
Who can tell you why?
Will gives two versions,
Neither one can fly.

Some fantastic FReeping!
Someone may be laughing,
You may hear the laughing
Among the DUFU fans.
And night after night,
When we go to bed,
That sound is our laughter--
Will Pitt's in our thread!

Once we have DUFUed
Will Pitt's swing and miss,
Then he'll discover
He can't recant this!

Twarn't me. But that and "The Palm Beach Pokey" and "Sore-Loserman" and several other satirical pieces really made November 2000 the "birth-month" of Internet-circulated political humor.
