Howard Dean wants Republican presidential candidates to apologize for Ann Coulter's insinuation that Edwards is a "faggot." Granted, it is popular among Democrats to have third parties apologize for someone else's actions, but in this case, "reparations for Coulter" shouldn't stop at GOP presidential wannabe's.
Conservatives at large should consider apologizing, too. There was wisdom in Edwards' reaction to Coulter's comment: "I think it's important that we not reward hateful, selfish, childish behavior with attention. I also believe that is important for all of us to speak out against language of this kind; it is the place where hatred gets its foothold, and we can't stand silently by and allow this kind of language to be used." (For the record, there's no truth to the rumor that Edwards has offered to hire Coulter as campaign blogger.)
As Aristotle observed ages ago, a satirical jest that lacks foundation in truth is false wit. And Coulter's crack was false wit. To paraphrase Billy Bob Thornton's character in Slingblade, Edwards is funny ha-ha, not funny queer.

Just as soon as every liberal apologizes for all the hateful comments Howard Dean has made.
But it's ok to burn the American flag...spit on troops....call Americans evil and stupid...
His union-pandering has led him into numerous, risible moments involving Wal-Mart. Remember the time he promoted his book at the Manchester, N.H., Barnes & Noble instead of the Wal-Mart next door, because he says Wal-Mart doesn't pay employees enough? The Manchester Union Leader pointed out that at $7.50 an hour, the Wal-Mart paid employees more than the Barnes & Noble, which paid at $7 an hour. And guess who said that the minimum wage should be at $7.50 an hour (i.e., Wal-Mart wages)? John Edwards!
- Hillary's plantation remark; Hillary's ability (abeit badly) to revert to Southern drawl when speaking to mostly Black Southern audience (insulting at best)
- Joe Biden's Pakistani and Barack Obama remarks
- Howard Dean's and guests' (including Whoopi Goldberg), campaign fundraiser, where it was seemingly 'OK' to slur Jews, Catholics, Blacks, gays, etc.
Definitely see a double standard when the 'infrequent' remark is made by a conservative.
Why do Democrat's get a pass on their hateful remarks?
Right on the head. :)
The candidates should all reply, "Why are you asking me to apologize? I didn't day it." and that's that.
They're such cowards.
I think she shouldn't have said it for many reasons not the least of which is this whole thing has been blown way, way out of proportion. Enough already.
Much agreed.
Maybe we Republicans could do that head-tilt 'I'm sorry" montage the Left loves so much.
"...And you knooowwwwhh what I'm talkin' about."
What happened to the left's appreciation for a "botched joke?"
Oh, that's right. Ann Coulter is a single, educated and successful female, not a Massachussetts self proclaimed war hero who dumped all over every single person who served honorably in Viet Nam.
Republicans are really more individualistic than Democrats contrary to what the Dems might say. They think of us as group thinkers when the posts and debate on Free Republic refutes that. I don't see Democrats apologizing for Bob Byrd. Who cares what Howard Dean wants anyway. Ann Coulter's a big girl who can apologize if she wants. She has courage and intellect but her problem is that she uses their tactics and sinks to their level sometimes with her attacks.
I don't know, John --
Being President means not having anybody to sue when things go wrong.
Agreed. It doesn't even matter whether or not Ann Coulter is at fault. The candidates bear no responsibility whatsoever.

He reminds me of that movie the Dead Zone with Martin Sheen who plays candidate Stillson..."You will put your hand there or I will cut it off and put it there myself! YEEEARAGH!"
"As Aristotle observed ages ago, a satirical jest that lacks foundation in truth is false wit."
The foundation for Coulter's jest was not that Edwards is gay, nimrod. But that if you use the word "faggot" you have to go to rehab.
But it helps you are you up to speed enough to get the joke.
And no one can deny that the truth of her joke has been born out by the reaction it has gotten.
(Unless, like the author, they are hopelessly clueless.)
"And Coulter's crack was false wit."
Of course it wasn't. One of the ways humor is used is to say something untrue to prove what we all know to be true.
What Limbaugh calls "illustrating absurdity by being absurd."
It's done all the time. And is probably the truest kind of wit.
"To paraphrase Billy Bob Thornton's character in Slingblade, Edwards is funny ha-ha, not funny queer."
Yes, Billy Bob Thornton and "Slingblade" are surely much more your speed.
And what a brilliant quote that is.
Sheesh.
Of course National Review is still smarting from being called girly-men.
And once again the truth of Ann's jest has been born out time and again.
If she had not used the magic word, nobody would be talking about it.
If any conservatives should apologize, and I don't think anybody should, it's the CPAC organizers. They knew who they were inviting to the microphone, and it should be no surprise that Ann Coulter ended up being Ann Coulter.
-- And the "Ghandi" remark to certain gas station employees.
"ACK! That is just so hateful and mean-spirited."
LOL
Thus, any liberal she chooses to talk about will be associated with the word _________.
That's the puzzling thing about the whole episode. While stating that Coulter was over the line with the faggot remark, I'm not nearly worked up about it as some Republicans/conservatives. So she called someone a name, big deal. The truly unfortunate thing is that the Dems will use it to get sympathy and common cause in labeling all conservatives as homophobic and whatnot.
And Coulter has demonstrated a sharp enough wit in the past to come up with something more sophisticated than implying that that useless wimp Edwards is a homo. It's like if she had called him an a..hole. It would fit, because he is one, but she could have come up with something far better. (Ambulance-chasing pretty-boy would have been better). A pity.
Call the waaaaaaahhhmbulance!
Isn't 'faggot' the British word for a fuming sissy white peice of cheap tissue wrapped around an obnoxious pile of fuming fluffy filler? Seems she's right on the mark...
Just to be clear, those are words form the article in italics. I agree with them, and I think Ann should not have used the other F-word for many reasons including far too big a deal has been made out of it.
I basically agree with you. Also see reply #9.
Give it a rest. Coulter hammered that idiot in a way that makes sense if you look at the guy and think about the time he spends trying to look like the "perfect" man. This "hair-do" with legs is just an idiot and does look like some kind of fairy.
Coulter only said what "joe-six-pack" in front of the tube thinks anyway. There is no need to apologize at all. She should be given a medal for refusal to fall prey to all the censors who don't like what she said.
Thank God we have someone who acts like a real man on our side, even if it is a woman.
Very few conservatives seem to understand that the joe-six-pack is right along with what coulter said. If the republicrats are going to mine a new source of votes they need to get it from the millions of people who sit in front of the tube watching the pols parade pansy after pansy looking guys for president.
The regular guy in front of the tube that already doesn't vote will be glad to vote for someone who he thinks is a real man. Coulter hammered Edwards with the facts. He looks like a fairy with that constant emphasis on his hair and how he looks in public. It looks like he can't pee standing up.
The regular guy hates these idiots being paraded in front of him, and Coulter was appealing to the normal man who sees these freaks as less than manly.
The reason that other republicrats can't abide this straight talk is because they don't understand who their market is. They still think that they need to compete with the dems over the illegal alien vote, the homosexual vote, the pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-politically-correct votes. They will never win in these arenas. They need to understand that they should be out appealing to the masses that have turned away from politics because they don't see a shadow of difference between the leading candidates.
When the republicrats get this then they will have some landslide elections again, till then they all seem to come out of the same beauty shop as the leading dems do. They look and sound like they all "botox" together. The regular guy hates this pansy look, to him they are all political "panty-waist" fairies.
Coulter, unlike all the people that went berzerk over her statements clearly understands this, and the reason she is so popular is because she isn't trying to please all the people that don't like her anyway. She knows who listens to her and buys her books. She appeals to them because they are not afraid to say just what everyone thinks anyway.
The rest of the people think these things but are to busy kissing A$$ to come out and say what they think for fear of not being politically correct.
Amen!
