Hunter wins big in Anderson (Hunter wins Anderson Straw Poll with 63 Votes. Romney is 2nd.)
The Chaser ^ | 04/17/2007

Posted on 04/16/2007 6:49:34 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Duncan Hunter won a big victory tonight in Anderson. Romney took second and McCain took a distance third.

Word on the street is that Hunter’s consultant Robert Cahaly worked his hometown crowd extremely hard. Hunter made personal calls to delegates and attended the convention. Their strategy, similar to that seen in Spartanburg, paid off again.

Romney did well with 33 votes while McCain and Giuliani showed disappointing single digit returns. Anderson is one of the most important counties in the GOP primary.

Here are the numbers.

Hunter: 63

Romney: 33

McCain: 9

Giuliani: 7

F. Thompson: 5

Brownback: 4

Newt: 3

T. Thompson: 3

Huckabee: 2

Cox: 2

Tancredo: 0

Interesting that Hunter takes it but Tancredo gets no votes. They’re ideologically very similar. I like Tancredo but would have voted for Hunter too.

Yes, they are, but I like Duncan better because of his military service. Who better to fight a war?

Good job on your man Romney too.

He’s a lot more trustworthy than Giuliani, at any rate. I’d be persuaded to vote for him in the general election.

Ultra, thanks for the link to the Pickens County results!

From what I've read the Greenville County Straw Poll this Saturday (April 21) will be closely watched because it's one of the most conservative counties in SC.

For a guy who has “no chance” he sure seems to win a lot of straw polls of republican activists who would actually vote republican in the primaries.

Hunter's military service edges Tancredo out.

Yes, Hunter is lacking in the fiscal conservative department but still I'd give the nod to Hunter. Much more presidential, if you know what I mean.

While Romney would be the best choice out of the big three, I am still very leery of political dynasties. Romeney’s father, George, was the Governor, here in Michigan, and I believe his mother ,Lenore, won a Senate seat somewhere, after that. There is also a certain slickness about him. He has the ability to have his views fit those of the majority of his constituencey, which makes him a politician, I guess (good/bad?).

"While Romney would be the best choice out of the big three, I am still very leery of political dynasties."
There are dynasties that begin and remain in politics all their lives to wield power and influence, and then there is George and Mitt Romney who, after both being extremely successful executives in the private sector and active in volunteer and charity work, chose to enter politics to bring better management to government.

Mitt's brother, G. Scott Romney, had a successful career in law and with the Lakeway Corp and Compuware and later was elected to the Michigan State University Board of Trustees. Mitt and G. Scott are both very active in volunteer and charity work, a trait they learned from their father.

Mitt's mother, Lenore Romney, ran for the U.S. Senate in Michigan but was defeated. Later in life she managed Somerset Farms in California's Santa Ynez Valley, where she bred thoroughbred horses.

Are you similarly leery of the Bush family father and two sons and their involvement in politics?

"There is also a certain slickness about him. He has the ability to have his views fit those of the majority of his constituency, which makes him a politician, I guess (good/bad?)."
What you describe as slickness, Ann Coulter admires as she said, "Romney tricked liberals into voting for him. I like a guy who hoodwinks liberals so easily."

Once elected governor in MA, Mitt consistently applied and practiced core conservative principles of fiscal and social conservatism with a 85% Dem Legislature and upset a bunch of liberals in the process (see my tagline for Gov. Romney's record).

Mitt Romney would have been a wildly popular governor in my home state of Texas with our Republican Legislature. I would have traded MA for our TX Republican Gov. Rick Perry in a heartbeat.

The next time someone starts with the ‘ why do you stick with a candidate that many don’t know of’ question, the answer is obviously, ‘because as soon as they see Duncan Hunter’s record and listen to him, the rest don’t matter much and Hunter gets the votes!’

Hunter is worth sticking by. He also happens to be the best choice we’ve had for President since Reagan. He’s the candidate the GOP and this country needs.
