Why did this thread end up in bloggers and personal?

Actually, I put it there. The orginal article was from Marc Arbinder's blog at The Atlantic Online. Therefore, it belonged in Bloggers & Personal.

Yeah, lets just ignore that in most polls there is ANOTHER MORE CONSISTENT conservative with as good OR BETTER nymbers than Mitt.

“Then are the several scandals. Rudy sounds like Hillary.”

Only, ya know, without the penis.

Not in the early states. And not for long either. Look at the national polls and you see that Thompson is dropping faster than any other GOP candidate and is now below pre-announcement highs. Romney, on the other hand, is the only candidate who has seen a recent increase in support. And the polls I'm referencing were taken BEFORE the recent evangelical endorsements.

As Bopp, DeMoss and others have rightfully pointed out, Thompson is a fine conservative - just as Romney is - but he lacks the ability to raise the necessary funds, create the required national organization, and to enthuse the typical GOP voter. They see those qualifications in Romney and have realized that he's the only way that Christian conservatives are realistically going to defeat Giuliani and put a conservative into the fight against Hillary.

Hillary beats every R candidate in the latest Rasmussen polling matchups. Rudy and Mitt lose by the least and nearly identical margin.

there's another Fox poll out today too, showing McCain of all people doing as well as giuliani against Hillary. Thompson and Romney both got hammered in that one by 12% against the beast.

Look. If it came down to Mitt or Rudy, I choose Mitt and I believe so does most of the voters. That said, I’m hoping it’s Fred. But I’d hold my nose for your guy if I had to.

It’s over for McCain. A report came out yesterday showing his campaign finances in the negative. He’s bankrupt.

I agree. Romney is about to move past McCain in the RCP average.

whether social conservatives will have the courage to rally around the only viable social conservative alternative to Rudy Giuliani.

Leaving aside the question of whether Romney can plausibly be called a social conservative, how can he be possibly be called the only viable one when Fred Thompson polls far better than he in almost every state; and polls much stronger among conservatives.

This is our choice to make, and we don't have long to make it.

Why the tone of desperation?

I think Mitt is going to the the nomination. All you conservatives who gnash your teeth at that idea better come to grips with it being a choice between Mitt and Hilary in ‘08.

I'm sick of being threatened by RINOs shilling for their RINO candidates. I'm voting for Fred in the primary and the general even if I have to write his name in. No more RINOs!

>>>>> ..... unless social conservatives coalesce around Mr. Romney, the nomination is Rudy Giuliani's to lose.

People need to wake up. This is pure BS. Rooty is the anti-conservative and Romney is the nonconservative.

The most viable and reliable conservative running is Fred Thompson.

I just can’t see mitt winning the nomination. I could see rudy winning the nomination, only by virtue of the primary voters making a huge mistake; because either those voting for rudy (with full knowledge of his liberalism) or those ignorantly voting for him.

It’s down to Florida and California, and I’ll do my part to make sure Fred has a few more primary voters (in California).

Mr. Bopp wouldn’t be related to a comet, now would he? I’ve never heard of the guy, despite his prominence.

Despite all the chicken littles prevalent in this election cycle, we still have time to decide upon our nominee. I’d like it to be Fred, despite the “urgent” warnings to the contrary.

So far Fred Thompson has demonstrated with his campaign that he is 'Duncan Hunter lite' at best. He's less impressive, less experienced, less conservative. The only the thing he has going for him is he was on a successful TV show. And BTW, where is all of that telegenic acting skill? What's he saving it for? Either that or he is completely scripted and unable to really campaign on the fly.

Hogwash!

Fred`s campaign is sitting in solid second place.

Hunters campaign is through.

Thats all you need to know.
