There goes Rick Warren, again (Joseph Farah)
World Net Daily ^ | 2-6-08 | joseph farah

Posted on 02/06/2008 6:08:21 PM PST by Terriergal

Despite the fact that Jesus Himself said in words recorded in three different gospels that the poor would always be with us, Warren says he believes the eradication of poverty can be accomplished through the combined efforts of governments, businesses and religious institutions working in harmony with one another.

So he has teamed up with ONE. Not the One, mind you, but the well-funded, well-publicized, celebrity-endowed organization known audaciously and only as ONE.

And what is ONE all about?

....

There's more, but you get the point. ONE is about promoting the forcible confiscation of property by government and redistribution of that property based on need. In another more innocent time, this was known as socialism or communism. Today, this form of legalized theft is often confused with compassion and philanthropy.

You can watch Rick Warren explain why you should join him in signing up with One on this YouTube video:

Behind the Scenes - 3 - of the "ONE Vote" Spot

yep, I’ve heard about the religious leftists. They say how Jesus said we’re supposed to take care of the poor, and how Jesus said “blessed are the peacemakers”. Taking care of the poor means move government programs to them, and talking about how Jesus wanted peace to them means we should never go to war for any reason.

I’m not buying it. A Christian’s primary duty here on earth is to make disciples. Period. Good works can and should be done by everybody. But a Christian’s emphasis should be on evangelism, making more Christians.

There are two things a person can do better here on earth than they can in heaven. One thing is to be avoided. The other is to make disciples. All else can be done better in heaven.

It is the reason we are not immediately taken to heaven upon conversion.

True. Context is a word that Warren has neither known nor practiced in biblical interpretation. He apologized to the Muslims for the crusades for us (gee thanks), and is otherwise courting the world without presenting the gospel. He is a megalomaniac that wants fame and has destroyed T H O U S A N D S of churches with his man-centered philosophy. I do not joke when I wonder if he may be the false prophet of Revelation.

If you and Joe believe that there are still pterodactyls flying over Asia, Africa and I assume Atlanta and Austin then you should at least provide some evidence.

If you believe there is a monster living in Lock Ness it would be nice to see some evidence.

Not the One, mind you, but the well-funded, well-publicized, celebrity-endowed organization known audaciously and only as ONE.

"ONE"? How am I supposed to Google on that?

Ah, there we go.

Behold, ONE.org. The domain is owned by:

The phone number looks bogus to me.

Their FAQ does not mention Hull House:

A Christian’s primary duty here on earth is to make disciples.

Not true.

The "prime directive" for believers is to be witnesses (Acts 1), which is more than just telling someone about Jesus but rather "living Jesus" to such a degree that others see Him in us, especially as to how we interact with other believers.

You're mistaking the so-called "Great Commission," which Jesus spoke only to the apostles and not to believers.

The purpose of "making disciples" by the apostles was to begin churches which were (and are supposed to be still doing) to be witnesses to society.

“Joseph Farah-Believes that pterodactyls are still living on earth!”

I’m no big fan of Farah, but what is your source for this declaration?

“I see evidence of God each time I look and my wife, my children or stare out the window onto the Texas Hill Country.”

This is stated in Scripture to be so (Romans 1 and elsewhere) - all creation testifies of God to His glory so man has no excuse when faced with judgment.

The question for everyone is beyond that of seeing evidence of God in His creation - it’s that of believing in the Lord Jesus as the Lamb of God for salvation from sin and hell.

"I am 100 percent certain man and dinosaurs walked the earth at the same time. In fact, I'm not at all sure dinosaurs are even extinct!"

"There are also countless contemporary sightings of what appear to be pterodactyls in Asia and Africa."

Looks like Farah watched one too many episodes of the Flintstones.

Thanks for the link.

I am with Farah on this one thing - God created all life and I am not convinced that man and dinosaurs were not walking the Earth at the same time.

On the other hand, as with all claims that are not self evident, one must provide sources. And his claim that there have been “countless contemporary sightings of what appear to be pterodactyls in Asia and Africa” sounds to me the same as Benny Hinn claiming many people have been raised from dead during his crusades. They both provide a sensational claim with no foundation or substantiation thereof.

Simply bad form - or a lunatic.

Rick Warren has stated that God is not interested in dogma (truth) or doctrine, but that He is interested in us being one with each other.

He has long ago left the land of the reasoning man, and forsaken the truth that is in the Word. He is a compromised dis-believer. He now states that he thinks we can wipe out poverty?

Government will never wipe out poverty no matter how much they collectivize the nations of the earth. Their “great society” has already failed here and other places that these people have tried it.

In their minds it is always about not doing it right or enough, or well enough. They are always willing to force the rest of us into their utiopian vision of the future though to the inhabitants of such a world it is anything but a utopia, and in fact is nothing short of an anti-utopia.

He is a “liberation theologian” and a socialists. It is time that he shuts up and listens to the Word and what it has to say about poverty, life, the poor, truth, doctrine and other important matters.

It is obvious from your statements that you don’t have a clue about the primary duty of any person.

The primary duty of each and every person is easily seen in the basic statement, “To know God, and to love Him and serve Him in this world.” After that we see that one of the great things that we are called to do to show our love for God is to lead others to God.

It is the purpose of every christian, even if they don’t do it, to lead others to Jesus. For someone who “loves Jesus and hates church” you give the perfect church answer. No individual calling to spread the gospel, only a general commission to the original apostles.

Let's take a look at 2 Timothy 2:2, shall we?

The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

First, no where do you see Paul "commissioning" Timothy to "make disciples." Instead, Paul was encouraging Timothy, whom he had sent to Ephesus, to appoint elders whose responsibility was to teach the new believers.

Secondly, no where will you find in the Scriptures where teaching magically leads to the "making" of disciples, which is one of the errors of today's so-called "church."

We think that we can "classify" new believers by ramming all kinds of verses, most of which are handpicked that lead to the reality that one must support the "pastor" and the "church" in order to be considered a "disciple."

If you want to know what true discipleship is, and most of us do not, look at Jesus' words regarding discipleship and the cost involved.

Now let's look at Jesus' words to the apostles (Matthew 28:16ff):

But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Jesus commanded, or commissioned if you like, only the apostles whose job it were to go and preach, make disciples and plant churches and then move on. The new church then was to be witnesses to their surrounding community and then, as it matured under the loving watchful eyes of elders (not pastors), some would be sent out in apostolic functions to begin the process of planting new churches where no churches were.

I hope this clarifies your confusion.

Why does this even matter? I saw the same things. He says “we don’t know, it seems like a possibility.”

Why do you assume they are exctinct? Why do you assume those who have sighted things are lying? They have an agenda? What about those who think dinosaurs and humans didn’t walk the earth together. Think they have an agenda?

I’m not sure you should go that far against farah.

People are seeing something, and he only suggested that not all of them may be exctinct. (e.g. that is technically true — alligators and tuataras, among other things lived at the same time even according to evolutionists - in fact we have clawed and toothed birds which they used to think were prehistoric ONLY also). Lizards grow continually as long as they live, much like fish. If they now don’t grow as large as they used to, that is easily explained by environmental conditions now vs then, something even evolutionists wouldn’t say HASN’T changed.

BTW I don’t think Farah would be terribly worried about the pterodactyl thing being disproved... it wouldn’t shake him much at all.

Makes me wonder just who is more open-minded here, the creationist or the evolutionist?

BTW this is NOT a CREVO thread. Go complain about Farah to the choir of atheists. This is a religion thread.

How on earth did a thread about Rick Warren's potential involvement in social gospel or parachurch group activism turn into a debate about pteradactyls? The original post bringing it up was a non sequitur, end of story (as far as this topic goes). We can debate dinosaurs (or trumandogz's (IMO) improper paraphrase of Farah's statements on that topic) if you want, but don't pretend that it has any bearing on Warren's efforts re: poverty.

Speaking of which, wouldn't it be reasonable to expect a pastor who claims a high view of Scripture who claims that poverty can be eliminated to offer an explanation for why Mark 14:7 doesn't apply:

The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.

Warren's speaking on the issue on ONE.org is nothing but platitudes. Everyone is anti-poverty. Telling people to "vote" or "do something" sounds good but means nothing; what action is being proposed is the question. And ONE is wrong on that, so Warren is wrong for being involved in it, even setting theology aside.
