marginalization of people who perform a noble and invaluable service to our society
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The people who are **really** doing a noble and invaluable service to our society are garbage and trash collectors!

sorry for the 2nd ping on this..... I have been flooded with responses from folks telling me that this speach while actually written by Neal was never actaully delivered... Just wanted to re-ping folks to let you know this so that if you decide to pass it on, please include this fact.

Yes. I have worked in Catholic Schools, but it is difficult making ends meet on the significantly lower salary. Why do you ask?

That’s okay, Dave. If it was not delivered, it should have been.

LowOil,
I agree with you.. Although I sadly think that if he tried to deliver this speech in ANY of our major universities his mic woould be cut off after he made he first point.
Having said that, I think this is a speech that every college student needs to read/hear.

This statement may ring true for MANY educators, however, such a blanket statement like this smacks of over-generalization and marginalization of people who perform a noble and invaluable service to our society.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The work of teachers is no more noble than hundreds ( likely thousands upon thousands) of jobs that make the very life and continued existence possible.
I for one find this “Mother Teresa” complex ( the “noble and invaluable service” ) of teachers a tad irritating. I bet if you gave it a minute's thought you too ( a teacher) could think of at least a dozen professions that if eliminated today would result in the death of millions of children by tomorrow.

to one degree or another we are ALL teachers... by the way to influence others.... especially our own children... the question is whether our influence has a positive or negative effect on those with whom we associate.
