Vanity - Privacy Fencing

Posted on 04/23/2008 5:59:37 AM PDT by IMissPresidentReagan

Hey everyone, sorry for another vanity, but I was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations on economical privacy fencing? I have requested quotes from a couple of people, and we really liked the bamboo fencing (mostly because it offered an 8 foot height), but we are open to suggestions.

A nosey neighbor has become a problem for us, so we thought a privacy fence would be perfect! We, however, have a lot of dogs, and a half acre to fence, so I would like something durable, yet not too insanely expensive.

Anyone with any knowledge in this area please help!

Any advice will be well received. I know nothing when it comes to home repair, etc.

Check Zoning. Some towns are very specific on fence types and heights. That may limit your choices some. If you live in a zoning free town, I envy you.

We live in a very rural community. Zoning in our area is unheard of, really. I called to check the zoning yesterday, spent an hour on the phone with a confused clerk who had no idea that places have zones for such thing. *LOL*

One note on “privacy fencing” that you may not have considered. Burglars just love “privacy fencing”. They can do their work in “private”.........

I had not thought of that. We’ve been fortunate thus far, as far as theft goes, but I think our dogs play a big role in that. Maybe if we left the entrance to our house (our driveway) open?

We live in a very rural community.

In sections of my state that are zoned rural or farming, landowners can be required to fence their property. If a neighbor builds a fence separating his property from the neighbor, he can force the neighbor to pay for half of the fence.

I have no idea whether this is an unusual provision, but you might want to look into it if you're interested in building a fence. Get your neighbor to foot half the bill.

Are high winds, especially hurricane force winds, likely to be a problem in your area? A neighbor of mine put up one of those really great looking (and expensive) white vinyl fences before hurricane Ivan in 2004. Blew it flat...........

That's why I have 3 dogs! No one comes near my house that they don't start barking their heads off. Even if we're not home, our neighbors know to look out the windows & check out what's going on. Also a burglar alarm system for if they actually breach the doors & windows while you're gone.

As far as fencing goes, I'm interested in hearing everyone's opinions on this too - we have an acre I'd like to fence. Not all of it has to be for privacy, as we have woods around 3 sides - but I would like to keep my dogs confined to our property.

We also have dogs.
Five foot high black vinyl coated chain link with brown vinyl privacy slats is what we chose.
It actually looks pretty good when you are done.
It is much cheaper than vinyl fence.
Also, no painting/staining like wood.

Hurricane Ivan ruined my honeymoon too!

We live in Kentucky. Tornadoes are a problem in the flatter areas, but our area is “hilly”, so winds I think we will be okay from. I am concerned about a fence that my dogs won’t destroy. I’m considering rewiring the Invisible Fence inside the privacy fence.

Is the bamboo fencing just cut bamboo poles, or is it living, planted bamboo barrier? I’ve heard that living bamboo groves are very invasive and so fast growing that they are quite formidable to hold at bay.

We, too, have a neighbor who built right up on top of us, not as close as subdivision close, but certainly closer than would have been necessary with him on 11 acres and us on 16 acres. A few years ago, he put his septic lines right beside our house as close as possible and couldn’t get inspectors to come in a timely fashion, so left them open for weeks and weeks. He would also stand on the property line and gaze into our back door. One day he caught my husband coming through the back door in his underwear. We immediately bought some fencing and put up a partial fence just on that side to shield us from both prying eyes and his septic lines. Then he built his house too close (in our estimation) to us and we are trying a line of evergreen trees that grow fast and fill out real good on that part of it. If they live and do as hoped, that should shield him from us and us from him.

*Note to self - ALWAYS buy the acreage on either side of your main acreage. NEVER think someone WON’T buy it and do something you won’t like over there. They ALWAYS do. I’ve seen it too much in my life, with myself and with parents.

Thank you. Do your dogs dig? Our chainlink fence has been repaires several times due to a couple of neighborhood dogs that try to get in. I was hoping with maybe a double border that would cut down on that.

How much privacy do you actually need? In other words, do you need your whole property fenced in privacy fencing or just close up to your house? If you are just worried about them peeping into your windows, just place panels where they are needed.

Echo post #2, check your local zoning = task #1. Some localities are perfectly happy with a 5 or 6 foot fence and go completely bonkers with an 8’ fence.

We installed the pre-made fence sections (8' wide by 6' tall) from Lowe's two years ago. We fenced 80' along the back and 144' along the side (other side was already fenced by our neighbors). So for 224' of fencing, posts, concrete, permit, taxes, and delivery fee, it cost us only $2,300, some beer, and roughly one weekend and a few week-nights.

We have seen very high winds in our area (Rio Rancho, NM). Sustained in the 40 mph range and some gusts up to 60 mph and have had no problems with it...we get a lot of wind. We compared the cost of the pre-mades with running stringers and installing individual boards, cost difference was negligible and time saved was amazing. Once the posts were set, just hold up the panel, level it and 6 screws later, it's on.

We have Beagles. They are not hugh diggers.
However, we put a bottom rail on the chain link fence.
You can also bury the chain link in the ground 6-10” and put a tension cable or wire on the bottom.

What kind of dogs do you have ?

You could also search out dog breeders of your breed through the AKC website and ask those breeders what they have done. Most breeders use chainlink because of the cost factor. We bought our privacy slats through Acadamy Fence out of NJ.

The bamboo fence is cut bamboo. I had not seen the living bamboo barriers, but I imagine it would be difficult to maintain. I thought moving to the country I'd have more privacy with more space, but it seems just the opposite is true. Who knew that a one bedroom apartment in the city, with neighbors literally on the other side of the wall would have been more private than 1/2 acre of land.

This guy owns the field next to our property, gets drunk, rides on his ATV over to the field and just stares at our property, occasionally cursing at me (never my husband). It's to the point where I don't like to be home alone anymore, even with all of our dogs there.

We've had several problems with one of our dogs being reported as running loose, but when we arrive home, the dog in question is always on his runner.

So I'm hoping if this dude doesn't know when we are home or not, or can't see what is going on, he'll leave us alone. The sad part for me is that he lives with his parents, who are super nice people.

I wish it were just my windows. Much cheaper and a lot less hassle. If it wouldn’t look so bad, I would only put up a barrier between our property and his field so he couldn’t see over.

Also, we put the privacy slats only on the side the nosey neighbor was on.
The bigger the area you fence in the less likely they are to dig out.

The two dogs that keep digging in are my neighbors’ border collies. I have a variety of dogs. My two labs are not huge diggers, our pug/schnauzer cross is not outside enough to dig, but my basenji will occassionally dig. She’s getting on in years now, so it’s not as big a problem as it used to be.

I think I’ll have to look into the bottom rail. The previous owners had only half-a**ed the fence and we’ve spent enough money repairing it that we should have just bought a new one to being with.

True Checkoff has a real deal on a lightly used invisible fence, don't know what that would do about the neighbor, but if you have that many dogs, the neighbor just might kick in some of the expense, to help his noisy neighbor keep his dog in his yard.

We did about 270-290 lineal feet. It was not cheap ($5500)installed by the local fence co.
We installed the privacy slats on 150 lineal feet ourselves. We paid about $850 for 150 feet of coverage.

Send me a private reply and I will send you pics if you like.

Video tape his antics. Get the local yokels involved. If nothing else, breach of peace charges, or peeping tom type charges. If he accidentally comes on your property (make sure you can define the line in your video), nail him for trespassing. Make his life generally miserable. Open carry on your property is generally legal in most unincorporated areas.

Don’t let him win. Moving is likely not an option. Have you discussed the issue with the parents? Nice works best, but they may be more likely to curb the problem with the threat of legal action. May be worth the cost of losing them as “friends” in this case.

I wish that were an option right now. However, with our dogs, and all we’ve put into this house, we would really like to stay. Other than this man, our other neighbors are wonderful. My problem isn’t that I don’t like to be alone because I’m afraid of him; I don’t like to be alone because I am confrontational, and I realize antagonizing the situation will not solve anything. What he doesn’t know is I’ve got my conceal and carry license, so I’m waiting for the day I can shoot the tire off his ATV, should it ever set foot on my property. :)

I suggest driving around your neighborhood and looking around to see what you like. No shame in being a copycat.

If there’s enough room, Carolina Cherry makes a formidable barrier. It’s a tree that becomes a bush, is evergreen, and will grow to 30 feet tall. Your neighbors will hate you for it! :)

If you decide to do it via shrubbery but you still need to have a dog barrier, just do a T-Stake and welded wire fence, which is dirt cheap. Then run some black poly-hose for irrigation and plant the Carolina Cherry.

I put in about 600’ of 6’ cedar picket fence and am convinced that you’re crazy to use anything other than 2 3/8” oil pipe for the posts for that type of fence, which will stand up to just about anything, and outlast us all.

Yesterday, after the sheriff came and documented the treatment I bestow upon my pets, I did inform the man, and his parents, that the next time the sheriff received a call it would be considered harrassment, and that I fully intended to pursue legal action re:defamation of character and slander, as a couple of other people had told me he’d said that I “neglected” my animals.

I wish now that all the times I heard him riding his ATV at 3:30 in the morning I’d called and complained.

I’ve been trying to convince my husband we need security cameras for a while now, hopefully this will help him.

All great suggestions!

Well, I could tell you a lot of very EVILLLLL ways to make the freak flee your neighborhood.
But, if you put up chainlink you can put privacy fabric on the outside. It installs very quickly and you can get 100% blockage much cheaper than a vinyl fence.Green and black are the most common, but you can also get blue, brown white and tan, lots more colors.I love the stuff, have seen miles and miles of it put up.

Thanks for the suggestions. Love the Carolina Cherry idea.

You're welcome. Let me know what you decide to do. I also have an issue with a neighbor who build far closer to the property line than necessary, which took away our privacy. I have been spending the last two months moving fence around to create an 8 foot wide "green zone" along that property line. Once my Carolina Cherry kicks in they'll never see the mountains again.

Unfortunately, because of how things had been configured, I have had to actually "move" about 300 feet of my 6' cedar picket fence that I just installed a few years ago. Luckily I had used all 2 3/8" oil pipe for the posts, which can be pulled out and reused, unlike PT 4x4.

I've been doing so much fencing around our property lately that I was excited to see someone post a thread about fencing. :)

You have some shopping to do after checking the city regs. Some good wood, but block walls usually add more to value of the property and most are not susceptible to faling in high winds and fade less in rain and sun.

If you're in a neighborhood without fences, your home could look "different" and may effect your resale value.

Must be a country-wide problem. We hear the ATVs at 3AM where I live too. Down in the woods. I have no idea who these people are - but I have a suspicion one of them is the Sheriff’s son, who lives behind us. He speeds through our quiet neighborhood & appears to think he is above the law. It’s always been quiet here, but these late-night ATV jaunts are getting more & more frequent.

Vinyl fencing is available in a 6 foot high “shadowbox” style, which has the boards offset from each other. Looking straight at it, you can’t see anything on the other side, but looking sideways there is space between the boards. This prevents it developing a bad lean or even being blown down by wind. From the top, the profile of the boards looks like __—__—__—__— . Vinyl will last a lot longer than bamboo or wood, and I think it’s cheaper than chain link.
