Fingerprints are considered to be among the most personal of information, and fingerprint databases created and proposed in the name of national security have generated much debate. Recently, “Server in the Sky” — a proposed international database of the fingerprints of suspected criminals and terrorists to be shared among the U.S., U.K. and Canada — has ignited a firestorm of controversy. As have cavalier comments by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff that fingerprints aren’t “personal data.”

The Ghost from Valley Forge

I had a dream the other night I didn’t understand,
A figure walking through the mist, with flintlock in his hand.
His clothes were torn and dirty, as he stood there by my bed,
He took off his three-cornered hat, and speaking low he said:

“We fought a revolution to secure our liberty,
We wrote the Constitution, as a shield from tyranny.
For future generations, this legacy we gave,
In this, the land of the free and home of the brave.

The freedom we secured for you, we hoped you’d always keep,
But tyrants labored endlessly while your parents were asleep.
Your freedom gone—your courage lost—you’re no more than a slave,
In this, the land of the free and the home of the brave.

You buy permits to travel, and permits to own a gun,
Permits to start a business, or to build a place for one.
On land that you believe you own, you pay a yearly rent,
Although you have no voice in choosing how the money’s spent.

Your children must attend a school that doesn’t educate,
Your moral values can’t be taught, according to the state.
You read about the current “news” in a very biased press,
You pay a tax you do not owe, to please the IRS.

Your money is no longer made of silver or of gold,
You trade your wealth for paper, so life can be controlled.
You pay for crimes that make our Nation turn from God to shame,
You’ve taken Satan’s number, as you’ve traded in your name.

You’ve given government control to those who do you harm,
So they can padlock churches, and steal the family farm.
And keep our country deep in debt, put men of God in jail,
Harass your fellow countryman while corrupted courts prevail.

Your public servants don’t uphold the solemn oath they’re sworn,
Your daughters visit doctors so children won’t be born.
Your leaders ship artillery and guns to foreign shores,
And send your sons to slaughter, fighting other people’s wars.

Can you regain your Freedom for which we fought and died?
Or don’t you have the courage, or the faith to stand with pride?
Are there no more values for which you’ll fight to save?
Or do you wish your children to live in fear and be a slave?

Sons of the Republic, arise and take a stand!
Defend the Constitution, the Supreme Law of the Land!
Preserve our Republic, and each God-given right!
And pray to God to keep the torch of freedom burning bright!”

As I awoke he vanished, in the mist from whence he came,
His words were true, we are not free, and we have ourselves to blame.
For even now as tyrants trample each God-given right,
We only watch and tremble—too afraid to stand and fight.

If he stood by your bedside in a dream while you’re asleep,
And wonder what remains of your right he fought to keep.
What would be your answer if he called out from the grave?
Is this still the land of the free and home of the brave?

I don’t think this is about getting my prints. Follow the money! What corporation contributed to the senator’s campaign and has a product that captures and stores prints? Sagem Morpho?

I got arrested a few times when I was younger and stupider, I’m sure they’ve got mine on file too.

That’s a great poem and is even more relevant to the current state of America than it was when orginally written 22 years ago. Our forefathers would not be proud.

As have cavalier comments by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff that fingerprints aren’t “personal data.”

Mr Chertoff never heard of a U.S. Constitution. He seems to feel that whatever mandatory information he and congress can force out of private innocent until proven guilty in court citizens is his to do with as he pleases. Abolish the Department of Homeland Insecurity Today. It is a Tyrants tool used on gullible fools.

I can see a valid need to VOLUNTEER them solely for government security clearance's and military service where actual national security is at stake. That however is by no means the purpose of this bill. The U.S. government getting involved in finger printing persons for everyday jobs in the private sector? Do you have yer paper Comrade? You can not work, purchase, or travel withouts der papers.

Chrissie Dodd and Shelby-RINO-Alabama don't they make a sweet couple of partners in tyrany? Shelby needs a retirement. One law at a time & one database program the United States is being destroyed from within and the terrorist won't be the ones who destroyed it either.

Does anyone except for those involved in criminal justice still think DHS was a swell idea dreamed up to protect the nation? Or is it a as long as you are innocent you have nothing to worry about deal?

Obviously, you hate America and blame America first.

Don't worry, the Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism uber alles crowd will be appalled to hear someone say that the terrorists aren't the gravest threat America faces. Americans themselves seem to be their own worst enemies. The best thing that can happen is if states start secceeding. It might just be time for Round Two.

I cut off my fingers and type with my nose.

What are they going to do about that, except to treat my keyboard as a toxic waste site?

Suspected criminals. That means people who haven't been convicted of anything.

You're all potentially suspected criminals to our pal the government. It's nothing more than control and consolidation of power. It's not law and order. And it's not conservative.

And it's not conservative.

What do you mean? Bush appointed Chertoff and last I checked, Bush has an R. The appropriate response seems to me to be cheering "Go Team! Go Rs! Take another issue away from the Ds! Block them by implementing progressive laws first!".

Selling out principles for political power is so much more fun. You can really get the audience much more involved. Let's start a wave.

The measure the committee passed states that “an indvidual may not engage in the business of a loan originator without first … obtaining a unique identifier.” To obtain this “identifier,” an individual is requiredto “furnish” to the newly created Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry “information concerning the applicant’s identity, including fingerprints for submission” to the FBI and other government agencies.

Pretty soon we'll have the "Nationwide Homeowners Licensing System and Registry" and the "Nationwide TV Owners Licensing System and Registry" and the "Nationwide Credit Card Owners Licensing System and Registry".

It's pathetic what this nation is becoming, and truly pathetic that Republicans are a big part of it.
