Press Coverage of the White House Nearing a Crisis
North Star Writers Group ^ | June 30, 2008 | Llewellyn King

The White House press corps is having a crisis. It may not interest the rest of the country much, but the problems in the Fourth Estate will, in due time, impact the nature and the completeness of White House coverage.

The ostensible trigger to the current crisis involves the so-called pool reports by members of the print media traveling with the president. But there are deeper problems with the way the presidency is covered by the media.

I'd be willing to entertahe idea that there is a "crisis" in many domains, but the White House Press Corps is not one of them. What a fatuous bunch of bs.

I wrote about the press pools ten years ago in a military paper when I was an Air Force officer.

In short, every reporter wants "face time" to try and advance their careers, and there are too many damn reporters.

Deal with it.

This is a crisis? Heck I tried to read the entire article and about half way through realized this is not even remotely interesting and certainly not a "crisis" of any sort.

cry baby media reporters!!

The crisis is allowing seditious, traitorous lowlifes like the press ANY access....

This is one of the better whines I've read from the press for quite a while.

The White House Correspondents' Association wants to restrict the dissemination of the pool reports. But this action brings up the whole issue of who can afford to travel with the president, when overseas trips cost around $25,000 per correspondent.

Get over it.

Yes, by all means, lets have those with the money be the ones to get the story. The rest can go fish. Sorta reminds one of the bailouts in the housing industry. Except then, these same press people were all for those poor people getting help. Just like the big names/heads that they are, they are not willing to work to help others.

“This is one of the better whines I’ve read from the press for quite a while.”

That is because it is deep wood aged. Not unlike Helen Thomas.

Whoa - will the Union survive? The evil White House has cut the Press back to domestic champagne!

The Bush White House has taken a different tack. They disseminate the pool reports to anyone who wants them, including lobbyists and bloggers far from Washington. Consequently, the writers have become more circumspect, their criticism of White House arrangements more mute and their jokes subdued.

Let me get this straight - the Bush White House has repressed these pampered darlings by...by...by disseminating their stuff more widely? To the barricades!

“””The pool reports are a press corps tradition – a part of the whole business of covering the White House. From time to time, those who write the reports have felt that their work is benefiting reporters who have not paid their way either in pool duty or in expensive travel.”””

I can see clearly now - the lazy bustards didn’t check for accuracy, bias or content. They all just followed the lead vulture. We should have pooled some hard-earned money for Rush or Hannity or Mark Levin to accompany the Prez - and had less biased propaganda.

Shhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssshhhhhhhhhh

Just eliminate the job of press secretary and tell the press corps there will be no further communication between the WH and the press.

Presidential press conferences and special briefings are few and far between. Otherwise White House pass holders have no advantage over members of the press from, say, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The White House Press Corps refuses to cover the activities of President Bush. We who read the Day In The Life thread know that he meets with a head of state practically every day. He welcomes a sports champion team or other type winner practically every day and usually has one other special meeting. These are covered and pictures are taken. The White House press corps is just not interested in the public's knowing anything that he does, unless they can spin it as a mistake of some kind. They are really unethical in their lack of coverage, IMHO.

His t-ball games have been held several times held every summer yet most Americans have no idea that they have ever occurred. These are incredibly photogenic, including cute kids as well as celebrities. One summer Cal Ripkin was the "commissioner." Think of the coverage if a Dem were doing these games.

I don't give a darn about what T-ball tournament the President attended, that's not the job of the WH press corps, items like that belong in WH press releases.

Fair reporting about the President's and his Press Secretary's comments and actions without all this whining from the press would be welcome.

Please don’t get me wrong, the Dose threads are great, but the info and pics are not the hard news that freepers want to see.

They just need to get femme fatale Lara Logan into the WH press corps and then the fun will begin!!!

I would pay to see which male horndog beats up which other male horndog first...... unless all the press corps males truly are gelded or gay.

In case anyone missed the Lara Logan story, this is what we would have to look forward to with her in the WH press corps:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/06262008/news/worldnews/news_babes_iraqi_tryst_117192.htm

She is on her way to a CBS posting in DC as their “foreign affairs” correspondent (suitable for her expertise)...... but it would sure liven up the WH presstitutes if CBS would put her on that duty!!

The Dose threads are a daily chronicle of the president’s activities. Freee-dame’s point is just that he is a very busy executive every day but the general public has no idea of all the work he does every day.

Americans who get their news from MTV, VH1, Leno, Letterman, Colbert, Olberman, US Weekly, Rolling Stone, Time, Newsweek, etc have internalized the concept that President Bush does nothing during his work day, except ride his bike and speak stupidly whenever he does speak.

These ‘news’ receivers probably do not even know when he travels overseas. They probably have never heard a press briefing or a Rose Garden statement.

When Clinton was president, he walked out to the driveway of the White House to a podium to make a statement about something every afternoon about 3pm. This statement became the lead of the evening news every night and the lead of every radio newsbreak on every talk show station for the next 24 hours.

This WH Press Corps has HIDDEN the real President Bush from the public. Without the “Dose” I would not know what he has been doing either.

On what news source do you base your opinion? How do you know what is happening when the WH Press Corps won’t report it? You realize that they are in the Oval Office with the President and his guest, taking photos and holding boom mikes, presumably to capture audio of the words being spoken.
