Miss Ahmedinejad's face and name are not known and thre are very few pictures of her. We only know she's an engineer but was forced to stop working because of islam.
She now lives in shadow with her three children and is only occasionaly allowed to go out of her house.

Maybe it is better to dress that way. No hair problems, no makeup, no spending money on clothes, shoes, jewelry..

The picture of submission. Can you imagine the beating she would take if she said something her husband didn’t agree with? Showed an ankle in public? Went to a Mall without a male family member? Drove a car?

I’m not sure I would call her scary. Her choice in husbands gives me pause though! (If it was her choice.)

Walking death.
The one thing that stood out vividly to me when I read Reading Lolita in Tehran was how blind the men were to the loss of freedom, identity and emotional pain the women felt after the ayetollah took over and strict islamic law was enflrced. Maybe blind is being too charitable, indifferent or callous might be a better choice.

You would think that feminists would make a big scene out of this but they know their place. They wouldn’t dare to criticize the people that attacked the US on 9/11. They have learned their place is at the foot of a man and that’s where they will stay.

It’s not that she’s scary, it’s the situation that is scary.
It boggles my very American mind that any women would willingly submit to giving all their freedoms away.

YES! Absolutely. It is one of the best books I have read on islam. I read it right after 9/11 and I find I still remember itr vividly.I think of those poor women stuck in that hellhole silently suffering a life worse than death. If you read the book you will see that is exactly what it is; no music, no mental stimulation from books or intellectual companionship. Walking death. When I see those women covered like that I see walking dead. I wonder what the suicide rate is for women in Iran? I imagine it is high.

Just her Burka is creepy. It reminds me of the Ghost of Christmas Future in the George C. Scott version of Dickens “A Christmas Carol”. Now if she levitates across the floor, instead of walking; if her hands have long, bony fingers that just point, instead of talking; if the only sounds she makes are the high-pitched screams of a banshee, then I'm thinking SHE’s scary.
To: bannie
I think so. You hoping he’s got at least one that’s better looking than ghoulie burka there?

Who needs suicide when you have honor killings?

Thanks! I listen to a lot of audiobooks (I swear I keep Audible.com in business). I've been wondering about that one, but didn't know anyone who had read it.

I imagine it is, too. But you know they will tell us all their women are beyond happy.

From the link I posted. For Dr Hasan Zadeh, who has researched women's suicide in Iran, "even though the world-wide suicide ratio is one woman for every three men, in Iran suicide rates among women are higher than in men." And the means of suicide is particularly gruesome. Suicide by burning now represents half of all suicide attempts. For instance, researchers at the Mazandaran Medical School have found that that out of 318 burning cases analysed in the past two years 83 per cent of the victims were female. And the problem seems to affect the young people more than any other age group. Researchers in Lorestan have found that those in the 10- to 19-age range, especially students, attempted 45 per cent of all suicides. Between 1999 and 2003, 60 children ages 6 to 13 were admitted to hospital for attempting suicide. Although no single issue has emerged as "the" cause, researchers believe that family and marital problems are the main reasons behind the high suicide rates, especially in rural areas.

I would not call it ‘willingly’. She is reputed to be an engineer and now I presume just wants to survive as her husband makes political gain.
What I do not understand is the ‘feminist’ in this country and the Western Europe that are so quiet while millions of women are literally being mauled. I now believe that their agenda has nothing to do with women but only with leftist politics. they have just found an emotional issue that women will rally around and blindly follow.

(Just to offer a second opinion) - It was a good book but the author was such a self-absorbed, ivory tower whiner that it was distracting from the real plight of the women students who couldn't leave the country.
Lipstick Jihad was an interesting read too - I came away with the impression that all the neurotic, materialistic Iranians fled to America and left their hillbilly counterparts behind to run the country.

I ran into a Muslim family in a very upscale shopping center here in St. Louis County. The woman was wearing a burka, but no veil over her face. I was (at the time) in my early forties and in good shape. She was a plain woman, would never have been a beauty, but her face was horribly scarred as if from a horrible beating.
I will never forget the look that passed between us for only a few seconds. It was enough to make me certain that no one would EVER, EVER treat me that way, and if I saw it happen to another woman, the person who did it to her had best never go to sleep while I was around. In that moment, I was my mother's daughter. She was a pip but, by God, she had her standards and no one was going to make her submit and die.
To: kalee
I wouldn’t be the one to die. You can take that to the bank. Not for the likes of what passes for men in their culture.

You had my Mom!
I can’t help but wonder if the woman wore no face covering if she was silently asking for help is this land of the free and the brave.
Just remember that her fear stems from the knowledge of being a hair’s breadth from death. That if she put ground glass in his dinner she would be dead before him. Or if she pulled a Bobbit, his family would kill her in revenge.
It is true horror.
