Billionaire, former mutual fund manager, Sir John M. Templeton has died. Templeton ran some of the most successful mutual funds during the initial boom years for mutual funds.
In 1939, when World War II began in Europe and the stock market was at record lows, Templeton borrowed $10,000 and bought 100 shares each in 104 companies that were selling at $1 a share or less, including 34 in bankruptcy. A few years later, he made large profits on 100 of the companies; four turned out to be worthless.
Templeton renounced his American citizenship in the 1960's and moved to the Bahamas.
He said his investment record improved after he distanced himself from Wall Street and no longer worried about the tax consequences of his decisions...

A real role model for today's corporate types. No understanding that some things are worth more than mere money.
"What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul."
So what? Today Mr Templeton stands before St Peter in his tightie-whities.
I don't quite understand your point. Are you saying that Mr. Templeton lost his soul because he renounced his American citizenship? Where is that in the Bible?
Brilliant Investor but also a bit wacked out, like Soros or some of the others.
If America didn’t have one of the worst Tax systems in the world he wouldn’t have had to renounce his citizenship. More people should revolt against our disgusting, unfair tax system.
Wasn’t he the first benefactor of the Heritage Foundation? I think he was one of the few Billionnaires who funded conservative think tanks. May God welcome him into heaven.
In the same day the LORD made a covenant with George Washington, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from California to the New York Island, from the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters, this land I give to you and your seed.
Nope. I’m not saying that at all.
I’m saying that I wouldn’t trade my American citizenship for a million times the money this gentleman amassed.
What’s yours worth?
Whether he traded eternal riches for ultimately worthless money that now does him no good is a matter between him and God.
Make sure he is buried in the Bahamas...
By giving up their citizenship? Wow.
Washington had no children, a great regret to him. Otherwise that is an accurate translation. ;-)

He’s dead, Jim.
Think of the mass exodus of capital from this country when 0bama becomes President. Yikes!
The U.S. has punished achievers for decades for being successful. While I might NOT have give up U.S. citizenship, that makes him no less worthwhile to U.S. and to millions of struggling around the world.
“Templeton was known for funding religion and science projects, donating millions to religious leaders, scholar, and scientists “
Kind of looks that he might have known where to permanently store his riches US citizen or not.
Do you know anything of John Templeton? He may not have admired our tax system, but he certainly understood that there are things greater than merely having money. His donations have helped church groups, educational groups, religious studies, scientific studies, and he has generally been an extremely admirable man.
He was a good Christian, and used his money to help others. It might help to look a bit more into a man before accusing him.
I simply commented on the sacrifice of his American citizenship for reasons of money. No matter what else he did, I can’t and won’t respect that.
Funny that someone with your screen name would praise running away.
The IRS has a lot of power over people here in the US, and fighting it directly is likely futile. The most effective way to fight it may well be to eliminate its power over you, and thereby deprive it of the very thing (tax revenue) that it seeks.
You must be a big government socialist who thinks it a good think to pay 40% of all the money you make to the government, then when you die you get to pay 60% of your estate to the government. You are what is wrong with Conservatives in that you talk a good game about wanting small government and low taxes, but doesn’t really mean it.
True enough, but.....guess you haven't looked at taxes in the UK lately, my friend.
IMHO, he sure beats the H-E-double toothpicks out of one of the other
“Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People (Time 100)” on the issue
of investigating spirituality: Deepak Chopra.
But hey, I’m a Western-European Descended bigot so I guess that comes
as no suprise.
In 2007, Templeton was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential
People (Time 100) under the category of “Power Givers.”
Templeton was given this honor for his “pursuit of spiritual
understanding, often through scientific research” through his establishment
of the John Templeton Foundation.
Even Russia has a 13% flat tax. No inheritance tax either.
One article I read decribed Templeton as a “devout presbyterian.” Given the modern day PCUSA one has to wonder what exctly is a devout presbyterian. That being said based on what I’ve heard and read he seems like he was a good and decent man with an eternal perspective.
No, I’m a conservative who thinks American citizenship is a priceless blessing that shouldn’t be bought and sold like stock shares.
How much tyranny do we need to endure before we are allowed to leave? Or do you think the government should a Berlin Wall with taxes for those who chose to leave? Maybe we should build a real wall and just keep everybody here? If you love America for its freedom, you should want people to keep their money and not have the government steal it. John Templeton left to avoid the ridiculous taxes that the USA has. If more people did what he did maybe we would have a better system. He's a hero and you are a socialist!
You can leave any time you want. Just don’t ask me to applaud you if you spit on American citizenship.
Implying any righteousness in the US tax system is silly. Are we serfs, that we do not have free will to ever change our tax masters?
“Why is paying high taxes a patriotic thing to do?”
War is Peace
Slavery is Freedom
Ignorance is Strength
How much tyranny do we need to endure before we are allowed to leave?
Anyone who wants to leave is allowed to leave. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
“Funny that someone with your screen name would praise running away.”
“running away’ implies he is compelled to participate in a particular thing. Only serfs and slaves have no choice in who their master is.
Where do you guys get this stuff?
Yes, you can leave but only after you pay the government the taxes they think they should get. Sounds kind of like ransom. True freedom to leave would be if you could leave with your assets in tact.
You must really hate this country...
I love the country...and I wish they didn’t steal so much money from me.

So, you love the country, but hate the gubmint?
True this is still a great country, but it doesn’t resemble the Founders plan. If there was another America discovered, I would consider moving there.
Well, we can run away, like this guy we're discussing here did.
Or, we can do nothing; which is what most folks are now doing.
Or, we can try and put things back right.
I choose "three."
That is the only option for me too.
“So, you love the country, but hate the gubmint?”
Love the country fear the government. Also think any tax rate that is higher than 10% is theft.
