With gas prices as high as they are, wouldn't it seem reasonable to cut gas taxes or maybe just temporarily suspend them with a "gas tax holiday"? Well the Democrat Congress says "no way!" Instead what we are hearing this weekend are ideas the Democrats are brainstorming on how to raise gas taxes! Seriously!
The American Road & Transportation Builders Association wants the Democrats to raise gas taxes by 11¢ per gallon and raise it annually to keep up with the rate of inflation. (You know to make sure we get that tax increase automatically every single year!) The Democrats think that's a tax increase is a great idea and that the idea of a "tax holiday" would be bad because it means government would get less money.
The Democrats point out a "gas tax holiday" would cut money going into the highway trust fund by $9 billion. "Because the trust fund is already looking at a looming shortfall, it would have moved project cancellations into the construction season," DeFazio (D-OR) told the Associated Press.
Republicans pointed out that if the Congress cut spending from a portion of their earmarks to lawmaker's pet projects, then that money could easily offset the loss of tax revenue. But Democrats believe government should always get more money, never less, so that idea was shot down.
Instead what we now have are strategies to increase gas taxes. James Oberstar, Chairman of the House Traonsportation and Infrastructure Committe, told the AP that the gas tax "is the cornerstone." He believes "Nothing else will work without the underpinning of the higher user fee gas tax."
In otherwords, the ONLY solution according to the Democrat Congress is to raise gas taxes. There is NO alternative. Government MUST have more money and the ONLY way to do that is to raise taxes. Got it?
But, they're going to be really fair to you. How? Well, they point out that gas taxes in Europe are several dollars a gallon. So raising the federal gas tax from 18¢ to 29¢ per gallon is not anything to complain about. So you should feel lucky that gas prices are as low as they are!
Well, excuse us for complaining about gas prices! We should feel grateful that the Democrats are only going to increase gas taxes by a dime or so. It should be, by their logic, several dollars a gallon more of a gas tax increase. Don't you feel like you're getting a bargan!
While gas prices are extraordinarily high they have blocked every effort to increase supplies and lower prices. All they have proposed are tax increases on oil companies, which of course would be passed along to consumers and drive gas prices even higher. The gasoline excise tax, last increased by a Democrat Congress and President Clinton in 1993, is a direct tax to the consumer leading to instantly higher gas prices. Why are they pushing for higher gas taxes? What are they thinking? Gas prices are high enough! Don't you think?

Anyone who doesn't know just doesn't think.
All thoughtful people [k]now this and have for a lifetime.
"Dimocrat" and "idea" are mutually exclusive.
Of course, increasing taxes is not an idea to the Dims: it's a fundamental party of their ideology.
Can someone please write a letter to QUEEN Pelosi and FReep mail it to me?
Every time I’ve started to write this Elitest I’ve ended up telling her off (and not sending it BTW).
I just can’t get nice, proper, non threatening sentences down on paper to this Commie.
And is the McCain campaign going to take advantage of this golden opportunity to drive home to the voters that the Dems are nothing more than tax-raising socialists? Of course not. He’s going to run a “respectful” campaign, which means never criticizing those “fine politicians” across the aisle.
Somebody tell McCain to hit back hard!
Kind of sounds like at work, “be thankful you have a job” while you have to put up with an a-hole manager who is screaming at you and then tells you the day before that you will cancel your vacation and doesn’t care if you lose your money on things like plane tickets, reservations at the resort, etc.
The Dems - SCREWING AMERICAN WORKERS since 1776. This gas TAX hike will drive Ford, GM, Chysler, Panoz into another sales slide, so they'll layoff more UAW workers, also will drive boat builders - like BRUNSWICK, Genmar and bombandier - deeper into recession, so they will lay people off, which means Main Street will be hurt - so we will have a RECESSION.
Why do I - a teen - knows this and the TRASH in Washington (King Harry & Queen Nancy) can't seem to UNDERSTAND what a TAX HIKE would do!!!
If some of the CRY BABIES on here don't GROW UP and UNITE behind McCain, Obama will win.
“Republicans pointed out that if the Congress cut spending from a portion of their earmarks to lawmaker’s pet projects, then that money could easily offset the loss of tax revenue. But Democrats believe government should always get more money, never less, so that idea was shot dow”
Republicans only point this out because they are not the ones controlling the allocation process.
Anyone thinking there is a difference between how the GOP and DNC spend is ignoring most of bush’s time in office.

I propose a tax increase of my own: Everytime Nanny Pelosi, Dingy Harry or other RAT congresscritter/senator opens their mouth and says stupid stuff and pollutes the atmosphere, they be taxed $2000 for every silly word they utter. The money will go into their opponent’s election fund. I’ll bet Pelosi and the rest of the gutter snipes would be quiet as church mice.
