Coming Soon: Gas Stamps
Ace of Spades ^ | July 22, 2008 | Staff

Brought to you by none other than Baghdad Jim McDermott (D-WTF?). I must’ve done something truly horrible in a former lifetime to be sentenced to live in this guy’s district. The proposed legislation is to create a new program along the lines of the federal food stamp program. The press release and proposed bill is here.

Some highlights:

“Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, introduced legislation today to provide financial assistance to vulnerable Americans struggling to survive under crushing gasoline prices.”

“The Emergency Gasoline Assistance Act (H.R. 6561) would create a program to provide $5 billion to states as a one-time grant with the money designated to provide assistance to families of modest means to purchase gasoline. This program could provide every family that is currently living below the federal poverty threshold with $500 in assistance. State governors would have the flexibility to use the money to create programs that target the specific needs of their communities.”

Criminy - it’s getting hard enough to pay our taxes, heat the house, pay the mortgage and feed the kids. We’ll have to bail out Fannie and Freddie and now gas stamps????

It’s not enough welfare pays for taxi cabs for the impoverished to go play bingo, now they will get $500 worth of free gas stamps to take that beamer they have in their garage.

what about thier “carbon footprint? shouldn’t they be encouraged to take a bus? How about rik-shaw stamps?

If you do that us rich middle class folks and even more evil uber-rich won’t have to pay federal gas taxes either.

Don’t you remember that taxes are punitive? Can’t stop punishing the rich and those in the middle.

OMG! I've worked as heating and air conditioning tech and I will tell you that the people who keep their houses the warmest are the one's who are getting their heating bills subsidized or paid for outright. Now they will be the ones out cruising for no apparent reason. BTY most of the large houses where the better off people (working) lived were always kept at 68 or lower. They just wore sweaters.

Oh man....maybe I should just divorce hubby and go on the public roll....

Seriously, this is ridiculous! I will get fired up about this one and lose my reluctance of phoning consistently and constantly for months on end.

Does this mean that the gas stations are going to be SUPER busy at the first of every month, while I stand in a long line behind a bunch of poorly dressed fat asses who are filling their tanks with high octane while I’m buying a half tank of regular unleaded?

I just wish someone in the MSM would ask these dumb asses in DC one question on these give away programs.

“Who is going to pay for this program”?

Well, with liberals, hubby is replaced with government, right? Either a God-blessed partnership with a spouse for life, or dependent on the faceless, DMV-style government for life.

Sorry, don’t mean to drag ya down.... smile! :)

(And give your husband a kiss!)

YAY! MORE CRACK STAMPS. Twice as much crack for every parasite in America. Forget twice - these babies will go for more than 50 cents on the dollar.

More people dependent on bigger government for more things, plus bonus acclimation to ration card-like concepts. And a nice fat guaranteed income handout from the hardworking taxpayer to the gas companies.

who are you kidding with the poorly dressed. They have better cloths and better cars than you will ever dream.

And before the PC police comes gets me...about 15 years ago i had a friend i had to take down to one of the worst parts of houston to get their food stamps. I had a 2 tone car because i coudn’t afford to get the door painted after someone hit and ran on the car. Long story short the other people there all had brand new caddy and lexus and enough gold to fund the country. That was the day i stopped being a liberal kumbya kinda person. It is very eye opening and will make you so mad your head will explode.

So now lets give gas to people who don’t work. Where can i sign up for the revolution.

“Shouldn’t they be encouraged to take a bus?,” you ask.

Hells bells, maybe they should be FORCED to take the bus.

I think we should start a thread on which every Freeper posts photos of completely empty “mass transportation” roaring through their city or town-—”mass” transportation that was forced upon the nation by the enviroweenies and the Welfare Propagandists for, among other reasons, providing transportation for the poor.

If the Rats want to give gas stamps to the “poor,” then the Rats should, first, withdraw all federal funding for “mass” transportation (those empty, empty buses) and divert it to private subsidized transportation.

I read a story last week about how the Dutch gave their “poor” vouchers for vacations as well.

The article was about several families who came home early, complaining that the vacation spot wasn’t nice enough.

I was going to post the article, but got called away.

I had no concept of the impact of welfare payments on business until I patronized a skating rink in Chula Vista, CA. I had been there many times before and was pretty familiar with the "regulars". I arrived on the first Friday night of the month and noticed lots of armed security on site. I then purchased by ticket and entered. It was wall to wall black people. Absolutely no room for any sane person to skate. I walked out and got a "rain check" for another night. That's when one of the armed security people appraised me of why they were present. It was "Mom's night". The night when welfare moms get their federal check and dump the kids at the rink. Argghh! Lesson learned. On most "normal" nights, the regulars included about 30 black young adults and teens. All very amiable and skilled skaters.

I never was a liberal, but had a similar experience that opened my eyes to the pernicious effects of all kinds of gratuitous charity. (By that I mean: charity that is not given to a person whom one knows for a purpose one has knowledge of.)

Anyway. One of many such experiences: we participated in a program called Angel Tree in which people donate a gift to children whose parent(s) are in prison. Awwww. Well, when the gifts were delivered to these children, many only complained (”I wanted a basketball” or “I didn’t want a basketball”). It was quite stunning.

Every Dem proposal over the past few years has been to get people OUT of their cars. Now they want to provide welfare gasoline to get them back INTO their cars. Why don’t leftist heads explode with all the DOUBLETHINK??? Are they really so completely ignorant of logic and consistency?

I guess it was my curse to be educated as an engineer.

What are they going to do? Give stamps to the farmers, truck drivers, policemen and others who use fuel for a living? When the jackasses drive the price of fuel to $10/gallon how far is $500 going to go?

The first thing they should do take the right of congressmen to be reimbursed for gasoline purchases.

Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) is serving his tenth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the 7th Congressional District in Washington State, which includes Seattle and parts of several neighboring communities.  As a senior Member of the Ways and Means Committee, Rep. McDermott is chairman of the Income Security and Family Support Subcommittee and also serves on the Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures.

Jim McDermott was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 28, 1936.  He was the first member of his family to attend college and Jim went on to finish medical school.  After completing his medical residency and military service, he made his first run for public office in 1970 and was elected to the State Legislature from the 43rd district in Washington State.  In 1974, he ran for the State Senate, and subsequently was re-elected three times.

In 1987, after 15 years of legislative service, Rep. McDermott decided to leave politics and continue in public service as a Foreign Service medical officer based in Zaire, providing psychiatric services to Foreign Service, AID, and Peace Corps personnel in sub-Saharan Africa.  When the 7th district Congressional seat later became open, he returned from Africa to run for the U.S. House of Representatives.  He was elected in 1988 to the 101st Congress and is currently serving his 10th term.

A physician, Rep. McDermott is especially interested in health care issues. While in the state legislature, he developed the Washington Basic Health Plan, the first state program in the country to provide low-cost health insurance to the unemployed and working poor.  In the Congress, he is especially active in health care reform issues.  He founded and chairs the Congressional Task Force on International HIV/AIDS, and introduced the AIDS Housing Opportunities Act, for special housing assistance for people with AIDS.  Rep. McDermott, the co-author of Single Payer health care legislation, is leading the fight in the House of Representatives to guarantee all Americans comprehensive health care coverage.

Rep. McDermott is married to Therese Hansen, an attorney in Seattle.  Rep. McDermott has two adult children and three grandchildren.  He attends St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle.
