Everybody had a good laugh last August when Roll Call broke the story about Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, getting arrested at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport for playing footsies in a toilet stall. The late-night talk show hosts mined the material for days; Slate produced a re-enactment of the bathroom ballet; and newspapers, magazines, and cable channels shredded Craig.
The angle taken by most reporters and commentators wasn't that Craig's restroom conduct was particularly shameful. The press doesn't object to same-sex sex at all, nor should it. Craig's true offense, said the press and the clowns, was hypocrisy, which they consider an inexcusable crime. ... But if Edwards had an affair and lied about it, shouldn't he suffer scrutiny akin to that of Craig? At least three-dozen daily newspapers in the United States published the Craig news the day after the Roll Call scoop, according to Nexis, but this morning not a single U.S. daily mentioned the Enquirer piece. ... So why hasn't the press commented on the story yet? Is it because it broke too late yesterday afternoon, and news organizations want to investigate it for themselves before writing about it? Or are they observing a double standard that says homo-hypocrisy is indefensible but that hetero-hypocrisy deserves an automatic bye?
That's my sense.

And some darn Republican senator from Idaho was a big shot? I had never heard of Larry Craig before his little incident. Edwards is a former VP candidate, and a former Presidential candidate. Yes, he's had his shot at the big time, and it passed him by -- but he's more significant that Larry Craig. The media is covering for him because he's a Democrat.

The news is being delayed until Edward’s cancer-victim wife is brought up to speed on the script. After all, she must be seen as a tearful, forgiving, stand-by-your-man, dedicated wife, like all Democrats.
It’s the National Enquirer. No one wants to lend that rag any credibility.
And Craig matters to me how? Never heard of the man before all that broke, and I still wouldn’t know about him if it hadn’t.
I think the sickest part of it all is that Edward’s wife has cancer too... I thought he was scummy enough to run when she was sick. I also knew he cheated on her back when (there were news reports already earlier this year if I remember correctly) but thought it had ended by the time he found out his wife was sick......
its pathetic some people really don’t claim there is a bias in the media... if a conservative or Republican politican cheated on his wife, it would be all over the networks, let alone one who is cheating on his dying wife.
And all the time I thought Edwards had a thing going with the statuesque Kerry.
but the National Enquirer also broke the Rush Limbaugh prescription drug story, a host of stories in the OJ murder case, the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal, the Gary Hart scandal, the Jesse jackson love child and the Clinton pay for pardons ...
I remember reading a particularly salacious article in National Enquirer about a White House intern named Monica Something while waiting my turn to check out at the supermarket. My assessment was: zero credibility.
Many months later, I was skimming through the Starr report and was surprised to discover the very same details. I was forced to revise my assessment of the Enquirer.
Just one data point, but still...

If this were Bush or a Conservative, MSM would go ballistic. Ann Coulter's comments have received more outrage than a man betraying his sick wife.
Glenn Beck mentioned this topic on his show yesterday. I saw only the tail-end regarding Edwards possibly suing NE.

Seems one of Edwards’ aides claims to be the father, and the mother says the same. It may be a lie covering for the Breck Boy, but we cannot force a DNA test to be sure. SO it’ll remain a non-story.
If the media and democrats had any consistency, which they never have, then they would treat the Enquirer was the gospel truth now as they did when it broke the story of Limbaugh being addicted to prescription pain killers.
The MSM is holding this story in reserve until it is needed to distract attention from Obamessiah's next inevitable gaffe.
Well then this should be fun watching him try and wriggle out of this mess.

Wasn't the Monica scandal a Newsweek exclusive that got spiked and then Drudge broker it? I don't remember the NE being the lead on that.

The difference between NE and a “respectable” news outlet is that the NE openly pays for news stories. They were the predecessor of “People” and other ‘Celebrity’ magazines, but unlike those who do ‘puff’ pieces on celebs to make their publicists happy; NE pays their friends enemies acquaintances for the DIRT.
NE is not “bat boy and elvis go to mars” tabloid garbage.
