John Kasich: The Best VP Choice if McCain Wants to Win
North Star Writers Group ^ | August 18, 2008 | Jamie Weinstein

It is crunch time with respect to the vice presidential sweepstakes. With the Democratic Convention beginning next week, Barack Obama could announce his running mate at any moment – in fact, by the time you read this, it is possible he has already done so.

John McCain seems to be – smartly – waiting until Barack Obama drafts his VP before he picks, or at least announces, his guy. I obviously have no idea who it is going to be, but my previous prediction of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty remains a very likely choice. Unfortunately, it would also be a very wrong choice for many reasons, not least of which is that Pawlenty does not appear to possess the gravitas necessary for the post.

In an article I co-wrote for Roll Call newspaper in 2006 about the GOP's decision to hold their convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Sarah Janecek, the publisher of Politics in Minnesota online magazine, attributed the GOP's decision to a strategic choice to focus on the upper Midwest of the country in the 2008 race.

Oh this is so good. Kasich is phenomenal. He would be an excellent choice for vp. He has presidential timbre, is a solid conservative, can work with his former collegues in Congress, is not willing to back down or compromise principles for perceived political gain, isn’t punative, has youth on his side and in contrast to Nobama, actually has a record behind him. Plus, he’s from Ohio. We need that state.

I would like to see John Bolton as secretary of state. He could be more effective turning that State Dept around, and looking out for our interests in these increasingly dangerous international affairs. I would feel good about having McCain, Kasich, and Bolton at the helm, especially in this day and age.

Conservative women MUST beat Liberal women to the WH... and if it has to be achieved with a female running mate for McCain... fine. There are lots of totally qualified Conservative women who would be prefect and should be cultivated for that spot.... additionally, it would be a hell of a boost for McCain in THIS election. It's time!

Bolton would be excellent, but I doubt whether he’d be selected. He’d be great for Secretary of State, however!

Kasich would be perfect.

Is that John Kasich the good friend of Gary Condit and Joe Scarborough? Who mysteriously left Congress at the same time as those two?

I'd be most concerned about skeletons in Kasich's closet.

Yes, and there would be a re-examination of all the DNA in the carpet at Condit’s apartment if Kasich was the nominee for VP. NO, the Reps can do better than JK.... hos about Mike Pence for a real conservative choice!!!

If she was we wouldn't let you have her. We would hide her until after the convention passed and she was safe from being hauled off as VP. Would you consider a slightly used Governor Taft for VP? He has a good, old fashioned Republican name, even though his insides are pure-RINO.

I agree! Kasich has to live down sharing Condits left overs.

Let me rephrase: I feel good about McCain over Obama. Keep the Supreme Court in your sights. You have only two choices. I’ll take McCain’s picks over Obama’s any day. Plus, Obama’s will get fast-tracked through the Senate. Besides, McCain is OLD. Let’s just get him elected and pressure him to select a conservative vp. I think we’ll be okay.

We’ve been voting for the lesser of two evils for a long time. I had the attitude of not voting for Bush 41’s second term and ended up regretting it ever since. I had to admit my dad was right, but I really knew it all along. My attitude now is I’m voting against the most evil.

Absolutely not! The same forces which pulled strings to threaten him out of office will not lose the opportunity to use him again when he might be the VP. or, maybe the President. John is compromised, to say the least!
