We just got a call from Devline Rossell, a charter captain based out of Venice, Louisiana. He was shopping in New Orleans to get some supplies before the arrival of Gustav (currently listed as a tropical storm that has left at least 22 dead in the Caribbean) and reported that the item most in demand was not food, clothing or shelter.
I just left a sporting goods store and you would think that the number-one selling item would be plywood or potable water or gasoline right now, he said. Apparently it is AR-15s and .223 ammo. I watched at least 20 people buy AR-15s and cases of .223.
Cant say Im surprised. After the nightmare that was Katrina I think it would be unwise for anyone to assume the state, local or federal government could guarantee his or her personal safety during a natural disaster. Of course, I think it is foolish to assume that under any circumstance.
The AR buying spree demonstrates that people dont think of it as an assault weapon but rather an arm that is ideally suited for self-defense, which it is. I also suspect that for some of the folks this is their first firearm. Goes to show that not only is there no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole but that there is no such thing as a gun-control advocate in one either.
Maybe Obama can calm the storm...
Are these people bying the guns in anticipation of the comong of Gustav or the predicted riots when Obambi loses the election. Be safe, do it for either reason.
I never understood why people buy ammo when an emergency shows up ... don’t they have stock
If Obambi doesn’t pull off the great swindle, than I expect urban areas and college campuses will be “no go” zones for any one who “looks” like they may have not voted for the Glorious One.
Only if he can throw billions of our tax dollars at it.
I feel safe. I stocked up on 1500 rounds of 60 grain surplus rounds last year, along with 10 additionaal 20 round mags. The AR15 is a good middle range defense weapon.
Always a mistake to depend on the Goobbbermint.
I'm waiting for early November to get mine. Need to get an A2 model clone for me.
I’ve got my Katrina rifle ready also....heck, I bought two AR-15’s right before the last cane rolled through.
I’d rather have and not need....
I don’t know why they are buying guns and ammo, since if this turns into another Katrina event the feds will go door to door and confiscate all guns again.
That was the NOLA PD not the feds. Also people that buy AR-15's are very different than your typical handgun/shotgun owner and are more likely to resist violently.
AR15s and .223 ammo.
Hmmm, good choice for an all-rounder.
Nothing beats a good 12g for keeping vermin off the porch, though.
Hey, it works well on the Mrs.
“Honey, there is a storm coming. I need to go down to the gun shop and get some more ammo.”
“Fine, but don’t you go seeing any orphan gun in the rack and bring it home claiming we can give it a good home. We got enough stray calibers to stock up on as it is now.””
dont they have stock=Yes your stock
I still haven’t figured out the thing about plywood. They live in a storm center and every season, they have to buy more plywood. Wouldn’t workable shutters on these houses save hundreds of dollars a year?
You’re better off with about two hundred rounds you have and 15 hundred empty cartridge cases that show evidence you practiced.
***I expect urban areas and college campuses will be no go zones for any one who looks like they may have not voted for the Glorious One.***
Well that includes me.
