We just got a call from Devline Rossell, a charter captain based out of Venice, Louisiana. He was shopping in New Orleans to get some supplies before the arrival of Gustav (currently listed as a tropical storm that has left at least 22 dead in the Caribbean) and reported that the item most in demand was not food, clothing or shelter.
I just left a sporting goods store and you would think that the number-one selling item would be plywood or potable water or gasoline right now, he said. Apparently it is AR-15s and .223 ammo. I watched at least 20 people buy AR-15s and cases of .223.
Cant say Im surprised. After the nightmare that was Katrina I think it would be unwise for anyone to assume the state, local or federal government could guarantee his or her personal safety during a natural disaster. Of course, I think it is foolish to assume that under any circumstance.
The AR buying spree demonstrates that people dont think of it as an assault weapon but rather an arm that is ideally suited for self-defense, which it is. I also suspect that for some of the folks this is their first firearm. Goes to show that not only is there no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole but that there is no such thing as a gun-control advocate in one either.
Maybe Obama can calm the storm...
Cheers!
LOL!!!
Are these people bying the guns in anticipation of the comong of Gustav or the predicted riots when Obambi loses the election. Be safe, do it for either reason.
LOL ...
I never understood why people buy ammo when an emergency shows up ... don’t they have stock
If Obambi doesn’t pull off the great swindle, than I expect urban areas and college campuses will be “no go” zones for any one who “looks” like they may have not voted for the Glorious One.
Only if he can throw billions of our tax dollars at it.
I feel safe. I stocked up on 1500 rounds of 60 grain surplus rounds last year, along with 10 additionaal 20 round mags. The AR15 is a good middle range defense weapon.
Always a mistake to depend on the Goobbbermint.
I'm waiting for early November to get mine. Need to get an A2 model clone for me.
I’ve got my Katrina rifle ready also....heck, I bought two AR-15’s right before the last cane rolled through.
I’d rather have and not need....

I don’t know why they are buying guns and ammo, since if this turns into another Katrina event the feds will go door to door and confiscate all guns again.
That was the NOLA PD not the feds. Also people that buy AR-15's are very different than your typical handgun/shotgun owner and are more likely to resist violently.
AR15s and .223 ammo.
Hmmm, good choice for an all-rounder.
Nothing beats a good 12g for keeping vermin off the porch, though.
Hey, it works well on the Mrs.
“Honey, there is a storm coming. I need to go down to the gun shop and get some more ammo.”
“Fine, but don’t you go seeing any orphan gun in the rack and bring it home claiming we can give it a good home. We got enough stray calibers to stock up on as it is now.””
dont they have stock=Yes your stock
I still haven’t figured out the thing about plywood. They live in a storm center and every season, they have to buy more plywood. Wouldn’t workable shutters on these houses save hundreds of dollars a year?
You’re better off with about two hundred rounds you have and 15 hundred empty cartridge cases that show evidence you practiced.
***I expect urban areas and college campuses will be no go zones for any one who looks like they may have not voted for the Glorious One.***
Well that includes me.
They had the DEA and National Guard, along with CA Highway Patrol and other various state organizations.
Well storm shutters like that are big and ugly. It’s not like the small ones worked into the design of the window.
Damn, didn't know that ... thx.
Depends on how much ammo you already have, and how wise the wife is ...
Shooter; the 200 yard range at my home club, the 600 yard range at the Des Moines Rifle Club and the other 200 yard range just south of Council Bluffs were littered with the brass of 2,000 rds used to perfect my skill with that gun (less the rounds used to sight in some scopes on the Rem and T3) in all of the required positions.
But, thanks for reminding everyone that you are only as good as your range card sez.
Ammo - you never have enough. It’s like a woman and shoes.
You have the 20 rd box, plastic battle wrap bags, ammo cans, crates, cases, spam cans - and then we have to start all over again with the next caliber.
:-)
I would hope that Katrina would awaken even the dead.
Speaking of the Obamassiah:
Obama: Let’s hope lessons of Katrina were learned
By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 34 minutes ago
BOARDMAN, Ohio - Barack Obama expressed hope Saturday that the lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina three years ago would help to protect the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Gustav this time. His running mate, Joe Biden, urged people to pray that the levees in New Orleans hold.
Obama and Biden visited a diner in this Youngstown suburb, an area that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton carried during her failed presidential bid. Trying to connect with those who are economically struggling, the Democratic candidates and their wives chatted with diners and told reporters that a properly orchestrated evacuation would be key to protecting the Gulf Coast.
“It wasn’t last time, and hopefully we’ve learned from that tragedy,” Obama told reporters as he left the diner, heading to a memorial service for the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress. She died Aug. 20 from a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm.
Obama and Biden planned another joint appearance later Saturday in the Columbus area.
Northeast Ohio, a Rust Belt region where the economy has struggled, supported Clinton’s presidential bid back in March. Obama carried the Democratic stronghold of Cuyahoga County, with Cleveland, but lost 83 of 88 counties.
Since then, Obama has been a frequent visitor in the area, trying to connect with the white, working-class voters who have eluded him thus far.
Biden said the Gulf Coast appears better prepared for a major hurricane this time than it was for Katrina, which left New Orleans and surrounding areas submerged. He said it appeared officials had learned from Katrina, and he praised moves to make major highways one-way routes out of the storm-targeted areas.
“It looks like they’re incredibly well prepared, much better than they had before,” Biden said. “Just pray to God that those levees hold.”
The Bush administration’s handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 has been lambasted by both parties’ presidential candidates. Republican John McCain has called the response shameful, and Obama regularly blasts President Bush.
Gustav gathered strength as it barreled toward Cuba on Saturday, on track to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast. The storm already has killed 78 people in the Caribbean.

Probably my old shipbreaker and pirate ancestry talking, but that's the honest truth, how I saw it.
Just an old Keyboard Cowboy...gating back out, into Cyberspace and the -Dreamtime--
This is an example of piss poor planning. The AR-15 and ammo should have been bought a long time ago. I didn’t need to have an emergency to prepare myself. My house is already wired for the emergency generator sitting in my garage on a trickle charger. I have firearms and ammo for defending myself and for hunting. We have water close by in case the well is unusable and we have food on hand. My wife and I will be able to weather most emergencies quite well.
they should prepare. COPS might go on a spree again
The National Guard, the Oklahoma National Guard, and US Marshals did an awful lot of gun confiscation, too.
Good choice!! >:-}
After the nightmare that was Katrina I think it would be unwise for anyone to hang around if it zeros in on New Orleans.
IMHO, For property defense, they'd be better off with 12 Ga. shotguns with high capacity magazines loaded with 00 Buck.
“They had the DEA and National Guard, along with CA Highway Patrol and other various state organizations.”
Blackwater is taking applications in anticipation.
me neither, same goes for 'sandbagging' the same spots around the Miss river...why not just pour concrete over it after the water recedes ???
Wife, "Another one?!"
Me, "Just doing my part to keep guns off the street."
Of course when the going gets real rough, there is always the M-1.
Watch this video. It will make your blood boil.

The SKS and AK Clone are for the girls.
Being a little smaller than me they like the way they handle. The wife likes the M1 Carbine.
I like the AR for sentimental reasons and I’ve never had a problem with one.
I’ve seen that Katrina confiscation video plenty of times.
Holy crap.
What surprised me is that the Coast Guard was involved.
I can answer that. Storm shutters won't stand up to a steady wind of 65 mph. About the only thing that will is some good solid 3/4 inch plywood screwed into the window frame. Even nails will pull loose in a wind like that.
An average storm shutter will last 10 or 15 minutes in a gale force wind, but get much above that for very long and they're gone.
Around our house we've got pre-cut sheets of 3/4 inch stuff in the shed labelled with the windows they are sized for.
There's also a box of 2-1/2 deck screws to hold them in place in there.
L
I predict if police try to take guns this time, police will be shot. As they should be, since such an action is now a violation of state law, as well as the state and federal constitutions. Hopefully they won't try..hopefully.
WELL.....sorta. It was also the national guards from other states, notably some very antigun areas. Like the State of Illinois, where brother Barack hails from. THey said the duty was very similar to duty in Iraq but felt strange because of it being Americans they were aiming their weapons at. Still, they had to do it. After all they must follow orders.... Sound familiar? I don't care who is acting: local state or feds. Anytime a law enforcement officer follows orders to the detriment of the people then we no longer live in a free republic. Katrina was a wake up call. Still, the sheep continue to graze.
IF I were you, I'd buy at a gun show in late OCT. Reason being if the OBAMANATION WINS in early November you'll see a price spike to rival oil, but worse.
Problem is, the store where I intended to buy my Bushmaster AR from, burnt to the ground last Wednesday night. I drove by just as the first fire truck arrived on scene. As of last night, they still had a fire truck on site watching for flare ups, and at least one police car to guard the guns.
The ammo cooking off sounded like popcorn, at least from the other side of the highway.
Estimates were that there had been around 500-600 firearms, and 50-80 thousand rounds of ammo in there.
The fire flared on Friday as shown below.

It was reported that the vault, with all the guns and the jewelry, survived more or less intact, as far as they can tell without being able to get in to it.
It's not like you can have too much.
Maybe they just fired off a chunk of their "stockpile" practicing and were waiting for a good sale, or next months gun show, for a good deal.
Maybe they'd even ordered some but it had not yet arrived.
But of course many would have taken an inventory and decided... well a little more wouldn't hurt.
