The Massacre in Hebron

Posted Saturday, August 23, 2008 on

Headline in the newspaper "Baltimore" on the massacre in Hebron

The Hebron Massacre refers to the mass murder of 67 Jews on 23 and 24 August 1929 in Hebron, then part of the British Mandate of Palestine, by Arabs incited to violence by false rumors that Jews were massacring Arabs in Jerusalem and seizing control of Muslim Holy Places

Hebron, located 30km south of Jerusalem, is the second holiest site and one of Four Holy Cities in Judaism, and is revered by Muslims as well. It is the place where the Cave of Machpelah, where Abraham was buried, and where David was anointed King of Israel and reigned there until his capture of Jerusalem. A Jewish Sephardic community had lived there continuously for over 800 years under various imperial powers, and the Ashkenazi community had roots there that went back at least a century.

In the early 20s', periods of Arab harassment, involving cursing on the street, occasional beatings, rocks through windows, would occasionally disturb what was, in many accounts, an otherwise amicable relationship between the Hebron Jewish and Arab communities. For some time, the 800 Jews in Hebron lived in peace with their tens of thousands of Arab neighbors. But on the night of August 23, 1929, the tension simmering within this cauldron of nationalities bubbled over, and for 3 days, Hebron turned into a city of terror and murder. By the time the massacres ended, 67 Jews lay dead and the survivors were forced to flee to Jerusalem. Leaving Hebron barren of Jews for the first time in hundreds of years until after the Six-Day War of 1967,It also led to the re-organization and development of the Jewish defense organization, the Haganah, which later became the nucleus of the Israel Defense Forces.

Many Jews survived by hiding in their Arab neighbors' houses, while others survived by taking refuge in the British police station at Beit Romano on the outskirts of the city. The surviving Jews were later were forced to evacuate to Jerusalem. One third of the people murdered were students of the Hebron yeshiva. After the massacre, the remainder of the yeshiva was also moved to Jerusalem.

When Jews finally gained control of the city in 1967, a small number of massacre survivors again tried to reclaim their old houses. Then defense minister Moshe Dayan supposedly told the survivors that if they returned, they would be arrested, and that they should be patient while the government worked out a solution to get their houses back. Years later, settlers moved to parts of Hebron without the permission of the government, but for those massacre survivors still seeking their original homes, that solution never came.

Undrstanding the "Palestinian" (racist) Movement...

In 1929 there were Arab terrorist riots in British Mandate Palestine against the civilian Jewish population that lived there.

“The [1929] riots were accompanied by militant Arab slogans such as... ‘Palestine is our land and the Jews our dogs...’ [and] brutal acts by Arabs...such as the killings in Hebron, where small children were tortured by their murderers before being murdered. ...the Jewish community in Palestine found itself caught up in a wave of violent disturbances that swept with a fury through Jewish settlements and neighborhoods throughout the length and breadth of the country. The danger now appeared to threaten the very survival of the entire Jewish community.”

This was not the first mass racist attack by Arabs against unarmed civilian Jews in British Mandate ‘Palestine,’ nor would it be the last attempted extermination.

Historian Anita Shapira, above, writes in a way that suggests compassion for the Jewish victims of Arab racism.

Dear world, why did the Arabs - the Palestinians - massacre 67 Jews in one day in 1929? Could it have been their anger over Israeli aggression in 1967? And why were 510 Jewish men, women and children slaughtered in Arab riots between 1936-39? Was it because Arabs were upset over 1967?

And when you, dear world, proposed a UN Partition Plan in 1947 that would have created a "Palestinian state" alongside a tiny Israel and the Arabs cried "no" and went to war and killed 6,000 Jews - was that "upset" caused by the aggression of 1967? And, by the way, dear world, why did we not hear your cry of "upset" then?

The poor Palestinians who today kill Jews with explosives and firebombs and stones are part of the same people who when they had all the territories they now demand be given to them for their state - attempted to drive the Jewish State into the sea. The same twisted faces, the same hate, the same cry of itbach-al-yahud (Massacre the Jew!) that we hear and see today, were seen and heard then. The same people, the same dream - destroy Israel. What they failed to do yesterday, they dream of today, but we should not "repress" them.

[A Survivor's memory]

I vividly remember the bus ride I took from Hebron to Jerusalem. That day the Arabs were laughing and making slicing motions across their throats as they screamed "Itbach Al-Yahud" (slaughter the Jews). I was originally scheduled to return the day of the massacre (which was a Friday) but since I was sick, I postponed my departure to Sunday. Unfortunately I was never able to return to Hebron, since that Friday and Saturday the massacre took place. Among the 67 Jews brutally murdered were 41 of my fellow yeshiva students. In fact, among the nine yeshiva students with whom I dormed, only one survived - my roommate who hid under the other eight mutilated bodies in a closet and played dead.

I was shocked to later learn that my Arab neighbor Moussa, who I had regularly chatted with, had not only participated in the massacre, but had castrated and gauged out the eyes of a Jewish barber

Good thing Netanyahu turned over Hebron to the Palestinians. We really showed them.

He has also said in the past that he is for destruction of settlements. But like sheep, Israel will elect him once again & act shocked when he does what he does.

How does it compare to “DEIR YASSIN” years later?

Flame suit on! Duck and cover! Hit and run!

Unlike Arab massacre on Hebron’s UNRAMED INNOCENT JEWS, Deir Yassin Arabs were not unarmed, in fact gons were found later on by their sides, besides, why not listen to the Arab Palestinian Walid Shoebat that tells the truth about the Deir Yassin LIE?

Deir Yassin - The Peace FAQ Shortly before the battle of Deir Yassin, there was additional troubling news: Mordechai Gihon's lookouts reported that numerous armed men were moving ...

Deir Yassin is a Hoax

Common Palestinian's opinion: "Israel killed....."

While the numbers decline, Beir Zeit, a Palestinian University who interviewed every Arab survivor admitted that the number was 110. The story has been exaggerated and conflicting testimonies cloud the whole story, but the best study on this issue is "The history of the 1948 war" by Professor Uri Milstein, one of Israel's most distinguished military historians, it's meticulous, very detailed and accurate.

Also, in 1952 a hearing was conducted in Israel which Israeli judges heard eyewitness testimony from participants in the events at Deir Yassin and issued a ruling that has important implications for understanding what happened in that battle. The question that should be asked is, how often did the Arabs ever issue any ruling, any court, any hearing for any of the countless massacars of Jews in any Arab country?

Long before Dayr Yassin, Arab and Jewish armies were already battling. An "Arab Liberation Army," sponsored by the Arab League and manned by volunteers from various Arab countries has always attacked civilian Jewish communities in Palestine prior to 1948. My own father has witnessed Arab villagers along with Arab soldiers raid Jewish Communities. Even the religious leader Haj Al-Ameen El-Husseni who collaborated with Hitler and had SS trained graduates to fight against these Jewish communities, some of which were found among the corpse of dead Palestinian fighters at Dayr Yasin with SS identifications.

The facts are, every Arab village in Israel participated in attacking Jewish settlements in order to destroy the Jews. The Arab attackers faced consequences of there actions, raids on civilians and wars will always have repercussions.

Deir Yassin was a heavily-armed nest of terrorists who in 1947-1948 had been attacking nearby Jewish neighborhoods and traffic on the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway.

Mordechai Ra'anan, leader of the Jewish soldiers who fought in Deir Yassin invented the number '254' as a deliberate exaggeration in order to undermine the morale of the Arab forces and no body count was conducted to tally the dead.

Despite Ra'anan's admission, the figure 254 was circulated by Palestinian Arab leader Hussein Khalidi which was the basis for a widely re-printed article in the New York Times which was refered to in the past generations.

Tally of Jewish losses revealed 42 Israeli wounded and 6 dead out of an attacking force of 132 soldiers. One of the commanders of the Jewish force, Ben Zion Cohen, describes "[The Arabs were] shooting from every house".

While the Jewish attackers with loud speakers warned in advance to 'Lay down your arms! Run for your lives" the Arabs fired at the vehicle and the battle erupted.

Also, claims of rape and other atrocities were fabricated to incite Arab violence against Israel. Arab eyewitnesses interviewed in a PBS documentary reveal that they were told by Dr. Hussein Khalidi, a prominent Palestinian Arab leader, to fabricate claims of atrocities at Deir Yassin in order to encourage Arab regimes to invade the Jewish state-to-be.

Deir Yassin resident Abu Mahmoud recalls: "We gathered in Jerusalem at the Hebron Gate. We checked who was missing, and who had survived. Then the Pal leaders arrived, including Dr. Khalidi."

Hazem Nusseibeh, an editor of the Palestine Broadcasting Service's Arabic news in 1948 and a member of one of Jerusalem's most prominent Arab families admited that he was told by Hussein Khalidi the originator of the massacre story to fabricate claims of atrocities in order to encourage Arab regimes to invade the Jewish state-to-be.

According to a Jerusalem Report, Nusseibeh "describes an encounter at the Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem's Old City with Deir Yassin survivors and Palestinian leaders, including Hussein Khalidi... 'I asked Dr. Khalidi how we should cover the story,' recalled Nusseibeh. 'He said, "We must make the most of this." So we wrote a press release stating that at Deir Yassin children were murdered, pregnant women were raped. All sorts of atrocities.'"

Abu Mahmud a survivor declared: "'We said, "There was no rape." [Khalidi] said, "We have to say this, so the Arab armies will come to liberate Palestine from the Jews.'"

The PBS narrator then says: "Arab radio stations passed on the false reports, ignoring the protests of the witnesses."

Lately, a prominent syndicated columnist from New York called the "massacre" claims as "one of the great hoaxes of the 20th century."

Syndicated columnist famous reporter Sid Zion, whose column originates in the New York Daily News wrote on March 23, 1998:

"Deir Yassin has ever since been the rallying call for the Arabs and the enemies of Israel and of the Jewish people. Arafat compares it to Auschwitz. It is one of the great hoaxes of the 20th century, comparable to the libel that Jews drank Christian blood...The fight for Deir Yassin was part of the war and a necessary battle for Jewish survival. The Irgun, under Menachem Begin, warned the Arabs and asked them to evacuate their women and children. Hundreds left, but hundreds stayed. A pitched battle ensued, and when the smoke cleared, 120 Arabs were killed, 40 Jews were seriously injured and four Jews were dead...[The 'massacre' claim] has long since been discredited by the Israeli government and every other historical study. But like all libels, it stands off truth and proof."

In conclusions the Palestinian Arabs left voluntarily, overreacting to their own leaders' fabricated atrocity reports. They were not expelled, as Arab propagandists claim.

There is always abuses and losses when there is a war, but as far as what I witnessed in the 6 days war and afterwards, the Jews did no harm to us. The Jews did no massacres on the West Bank and in general behaved righteously, I know what I have seen. It is our hate to the Jewish presence that fueled wars and attacks.
