I was talking to someone at a party two Saturdays ago. He is a liberal who supports Obama. He's involved with some of the same charity work that I do and seems like a decent guy. I don't know if he knows I'm a Republican but he told me, out of the blue, that when he sees a McCain sign, he becomes enraged and can't think straight. He told me that he knows there is something wrong with that and its an “issue” he needs to work on. Its disturbing.

I think it comes from the fact that there are no social boundaries on hatred of the Right. When we grow up (or at least back when I was a kid), our institutions, including the media, enforce a social code—you have to respect everyone, you can't get violent because someone says something you disagree with. That is gone. The MSM, in effect, is signaling that its OK to hate those evil conservatives. It really is the process by which a society starts to persecute a minority. The same thing happened, albeit on a much more proactive scale, in Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia. It was OK to hate the Jews or the capitalists. If we end up in a police state, with Brownshirt thugs roaming the streets attacking the opposition, it will be brought about from the PC, Socialist Left.
