Mechanix Illustrated
self | self

Posted on 12/06/2008 6:22:38 PM PST by Don W

I remember vividly an article in an old (late 1960's, early 1970's) Mechanix Illustrated magazine (the small version) that gave detailed plans for a "Fan With No Moving Parts".

It used a transformer, plastic, and nails in order to generate an ionized 'wave' that moved air. A by-product of this was a slight increase in the ozone in the airstream.

I wonder if anyone out in FReeperdom remembers this and possibly has the plans?

Anyone? Bueller?

I have a use for this device, if I could only find the plans.

I just Googled “Fan With No Moving Parts” and got quite a few returns. You should be able to find something.

Ion Generator

alt

Generates negative ions and blows air without any moving parts.

High voltage negative ion generator generates "ion wind" without a fan or moving parts. Wind is generated by force of ion repulsion. Similar in principle to the ion propulsion systems used by NASA in modern spacecraft. Generate negative ions for health and airborne pollution removal in small areas. Kit includes 7.5kV DC negative power supply at 400 uA, 7 ion wind tubes and mounting hardware for the ion wind generator.

IG7 - $64.95
Ion Generator Kit (Kit; Requires Assembly)

AC125 - $9.95
110VAC Power Adapter

No plans, but isn’t the no fan “ion drive” the principle behind the Ionic Breeze from Sharper Image?

Oops never mind:

Dude, ion generators with or without fans are not new.

You can even buy them for your car.

Just don't touch that 7.5 kV plate :-) There is some considerable capacitance (500 - 1,000 pF), and combined with the DC from the power supply it can really ruin your day (or waste one of cat's lives.) You do not need to be grounded or touch any other part to be shocked.

One effect of such a high voltage strike is that the muscles in your arm contract, the arm moves very fast in a random direction, and can be easily injured if it hits something.

Solid state fan with no moving parts (video)

some guy that built a fan-less cooling system (ion cooler) for his computer has the project here.

LOL.

Dude, this was about an article I remembered from when I was a kid. Ion generation was not what the question was, I was hoping that someone would remember the article as well, and maybe have a copy on hand.

One sentence fragment from the article I vividly remember is:

“while we wouldn’t recommend it for cooling a sweaty brow...”,

then something about ozone.

The availability of similar devices is excellent news, and I will use the info gathered here for my nefarious aims (mwah-ha-ha).

Thanks again, all
