Israel Rains Fire Down On Gaza In Response To Rocket Attacks On Southern Israel
STEVELACKNER.COM ^ | December 27, 2008 | Steven W. Lackner

Israel has finally responded to the rocket attacks against her civilians by raining fire down on Hamas in the Gaza strip. The Jerusalem Post reports the response constitutes the "heaviest military strike against the Gaza Strip since the 1967 Six Day War" as "the Israel Air Force bombed over 170 targets on Saturday, killing more than 230 Palestinians." "Operation Cast Lead" is aimed at putting a stop to Hamas rocket attacks against southern Israel.

The Jerusalem Post continues saying that "in two waves, over 100 fighter jets and attack helicopters dropped dozens of smart bombs and hundreds of tons of explosives on Hamas training camps, headquarters, weapons storehouses, underground missile silos and command-and-control centers scattered throughout the Gaza Strip. In response, 80 Kassam rockets, Grad-model Katyushas and mortar shells pounded southern Israel throughout the day. One rocket scored a direct hit on an apartment building in Netivot, killing 58-year-old Beber Vaknin and wounding several others." Reuters reports that "Israel said it had bombed a mosque in Gaza City on Saturday because it was used for 'terrorist activities.'... An Israeli military spokesman said Israel had sought to avoid attacking religious institutions but 'anyone responsible for attacks (on Israel) will not find refuge in any facility.'"

"There is a time for a cease-fire and a time to fight. Now is the time to fight," declared Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said in a statement: "Until now we have shown restraint. But today there is no other option than a military operation. We need to protect our citizens from attack through a military response against the terror infrastructure in Gaza. This is the expression of our basic right to self-defense. Israel left Gaza in order to create an opportunity for peace. In return, the Hamas terror organization took control of Gaza and is using its citizens as cover while it deliberately targets Israeli communities and denies any chance for peace. We have tried everything to reach calm without using force. We agreed to a truce through Egypt that was violated by Hamas, which continued to target Israel, hold Gilad Shalit and build up its arms."

Hamas leaders threatened revenge with Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum declaring they "will continue the resistance until the last drop of blood." Hamas spokesman Abu Ubaida said the group will "teach the enemy a lesson they will never forget".

I hope that the Israeli strikes will send a message to the Islamic terrorist in a language they understand. I can only pray that the strikes are succesful. Israel should not ever apologize for defending her citizens. If cease-fires and negotiations actually led to peace and security then Israel would be the most peaceful and secure country on earth. Military strikes should not end until terrorism ends. So long as Hamas controls Gaza a state of war exists. The patience of Israel seems to have run out after 200 rockets fell on southern Israel this past week. Rocket attacks that the media will no doubt ignore as it focuses on the suffering of the poor Palestinians. Israel should not feel compelled to wait for over 60 rockets to fall on the country in the course of a single day before responding. The past 60 years are more than enough justification.

The international community, the media, and others, will no doubt want us to extend our sympathy to the Palestinians in Gaza. There will be calls for Israel to show "restraint," though the last time restraint ever stopped a dedicated terrorist foe eludes me. Let us not forget that these are the very same Palestinians that voted in the radical Islamoterrorist Hamas to take over the Palestinian Parliament. These are the very same Palestinians who allow Gaza to be used as a base for rocket launchings against innocent Israeli civilians, the very same Palestinians who allow for the indoctrination of Gaza children into a cult of death, the very same Palestinians that glorify the suicide bomber from the Mosque pulpit, and the very same Palestinians that use populations centers and human shields as a cover for terrorist activity. Furthemore, this is the very same Gaza which Israel abandoned. Israel withdrew every soldier and settler and gave the Palestinians control of the territory. In fact, greenhouses used by the settlers were left behind for Palestinian use and the Palestinians burned them to the ground. They took the retreat from Gaza as a sign that terrorism works and that the jihad against Israel must continue until the Jewish State is destroyed. Israel today seems to be sending a very different message. If the Palestinians had worked to build themselves a better society in the Gaza Strip instead of continuing their war and terrorism against Israel, there would be no military strike against Gaza today. The peace process has always been irrelevant when dealing with Palestinians that have no desire for peace. Israel is on the front lines in the global battle against radical Islamic Jihadism. I hope and pray that the Israeli response is succesful in weakening the Islamoterrorist enemy not only in the short term but in the long term as well.

with Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum declaring they "will continue the resistance until the last drop of blood."

Moslems have always been liars, but let the fanatics speak the truth to this. There will never be peace until all the self-styled martyrs achieve their goal of being dead at the hands of those they declared to be their enemies.

I am all for a early peace. However we get there.

Israel. Take them up on this. Do as the Romans did to Carthage. Given the chance it is what they would do to you.

“Israel is on the front lines in the global battle against radical Islamic Jihadism.”

If the Jihadists defeat Israel, they would immediately turn their full attention to destroying the United States. We face a world wide Jihad against western civilization.

Tomorrow the Arabs will start passing resolutions in UN. Israel needs to ignore all of it, Gaza needs to be scorched like Grozny or Berlin. These people need to be chased into Egypt where they can be controlled by an Arab power.

Ya know, If Mexico was training an Army of Terrorists and Launching rockets into California.....I wonder what the USA would do ?
And all these MSM pics of “man” or “woman” “reacting” to dead terrorists bodies laid out for a kodac moment - is nothing more than Hamas seeking support, help from other Jew hating supporters.
Rockets are not discriminating . . Israel was . . kill those that are planning your death is an act of common sense.

Take care of business Israel, do whatever needs to be done to kill off as many of these islamic extremists as possible before Obama takes over, because once that happens, Obama will condemn any action Israel takes to defend itself

Yes, I’m proud of them too.

They will need to adjust their military and strategic gameplan now that Zero will be present, and he’ll rely on the UN to “resolve” conflicts.

Interesting timing: after 11/4, but before 1/20, and they waited until after Christmas, though the strike may have been timed to coincide with the “graduation” ceremonies they attacked.

Most Americans Support Right of Jews to Live and Build in Judea-Samaria
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/927783/posts
June 10, 2003
"By a margin of nearly five to one, Americans oppose the Bush administration's demand to halt all further Jewish construction in Judea-Samaria (the West Bank) and Gaza . . . The poll, carried out by John McLaughlin & Associates, surveyed a scientific sample of 1,000 American adults on May 21, 2003."

As for neo-Nazi canards against making loans and selling weapons to Israel,...

The Harpy was designed by Israel Aircraft Industries, and it's a very old design. In 06NOV05, it was decided that Israel will be involved in the F-35 program.
We should not alienate Israel from joint defense development, because Israel is willingly inclined toward cooperation with us in defense. And we don't want to cut ourselves off from Israeli R&D (not to mention cutting ourselves off again from the larger potential voter base, see above statistic).

ISRAEL ROARED TODAY.

Indeed they did. Excellent work by the IDF!

Your post reminded me of the scene from Narnia where Aslan comes roaring into the battle to save his friends from their attacking enemies. It's kind of what Israel did today.

“Ya know, If Mexico was training an Army of Terrorists and Launching rockets into California.....I wonder what the USA would do ?”

Is that so different than the reality in Mexico and CA today? Mexican troops regularly cross the border in support of drug and human traffickers. Mexico sends its gangs to American cities and kills police who are not taking bribes.

Granted, there are no rockets; but that’s because the strategic goals of the two sets of invaders are different. The muslims have to drive the Israelis out. Making life impossible for Israelis will accomplish that. OTOH, all the Mexican gvt. has to do is get enough of it’s citizens over the border and get them the vote. America will, eventually, surrender gratefully.

And what are we doing in response?

Of all the atrocities and outrages of the Islamic terrorists, their practice of hiding behind their civilians makes me sick the most.

Probably no other tactic has resulted in the death of more innocent by standers, than this most gutless tactic.

The msm almost never points this out when they are talking about the "civilian deaths" caused by air strikes.

“Ya know, If Mexico was training an Army of Terrorists and Launching rockets into California.....I wonder what the USA would do ?”

Can’t resist another response.

Obama would sit down with the rocketeers without condition and try to understand their perspective and why they were mad at us. It would turn out to be imperialism and capitalism that was bothering them; but a lot of money would make them feel so much better that they would promise to stop launching rockets for 60 days.

Obama would proudly declare peace in our time. The rockets would launch about 20 days after the money was transferred.

The NYT and LAT would blame conservative Christians when the Mexicans started launching rockets again.

Obama would sit down, without conditions, . . .

The Jihadi’s won’t defeat Israel. And if they do, why would that makethem more likely to attack us and more likely to succeed? If they want to attack the US why don’t they do it now?

[Hamas leaders threatened revenge with Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum declaring they “will continue the resistance until the last drop of blood.”]

That can be arranged, Bucko.

Actually, this is a great sign. Since the Israelis know they won’t be able to count on Obambi for anything, they are now free to pursue their own defense.
